PTI slams sugar price hike, demands judicial inquiry
In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, the party demanded that either the official rate of Rs 165 per kg for sugar be strictly enforced or the government should publicly withdraw this promise. It also called for an immediate judicial inquiry into the price hike and duty-free sugar imports.
The PTI Punjab further demanded that all sugar import/export permits issued since 2023 be made public, and that strict penalties and legal action be taken against sugar mills violating agreements.
The party also urged the reactivation and empowerment of all relevant regulatory institutions, including the FIA, FBR, SECP, and CCP.
According to PTI Punjab Media Cell Head Shayan Bashir, 'The sugar mafia, which continues to exploit the public through unjustified profiteering, and their patrons, inept and corrupt rulers, have set the official price of sugar at Rs 165 per kg, yet it is being sold in markets for Rs 180 to Rs 210 per kg.'
He added, 'There is no visible check and balance on sugar supply and pricing in the province, which was a clear reflection of the worst kind of mismanagement. The largest province of Pakistan cannot be run through glamorous advertisements and TikTok theatrics. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz may be a good actress in front of the camera, but governance is not run through selfies or reels. Governing a province was not a scripted show; it is the real world, and unfortunately, she has completely failed in it.'
Bashir said the ongoing sugar crisis was a glaring example of governmental incompetence and elite favouritism. He alleged that the sugar mill mafia was rewarded through artificial shortages, followed by duty-free sugar imports that benefited select importers while the public suffered due to inflation. 'The powerful few made billions, with full state support,' he said.
He further claimed, 'The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has labelled this duty-free import policy a clear violation of Pakistan's economic reform commitments. It not only undermines fiscal discipline but also adds a new burden on an already devastated economy. During the PTI government, an inquiry commission was constituted to investigate the sugar crisis, and all those involved were held accountable; even close allies like Jahangir Tareen were not given any concessions.'
Bashir maintained that under the current regime, the public has been crushed under the weight of inflation while the rulers remain apathetic and the media is silent. 'The truth was being buried under a flood of advertisements, and there was no one to hear the public's cry. Even the pain of inflation has now fallen victim to vested interests. The PTI Punjab will strongly protest against this anti-people government and raise public issues on every platform,' he concluded.

Nine terrorists killed in Hangu operation
Pakistan security forces killed nine terrorists during an operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's (KP) Hangu district, Aaj News reported on Saturday. Bangladesh's largest Islamist party holds mega rally
DHAKA: Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Bangladesh's main Islamist party rallied on Saturday, demanding an overhaul of the electoral system as the country gears up for polls next year. The Jamaat-e-Islami party has gained significant momentum since the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a popular uprising last year. During her tenure, Hasina took a hardline stance against Jamaat, even cancelling its registration as a political party. For decades, Jamaat was barred from holding public rallies. Last month, the Supreme Court restored the party's registration, paving the way for its participation in elections slated for next April. We went to jail, we were robbed of our political rights,' Mohammad Abdul Mannan, a 29-year-old party activist, told AFP. 'We've gathered here in masses to press our seven-point demand, which includes participatory representation in parliament,' Mannan said. 'Elections shouldn't be held unless our demands are fulfilled.' After independence, Jamaat was banned. It later re-emerged and registered its best electoral performance in 1991 when it secured 18 seats. The party joined a coalition government in 2001, but failed to build lasting popular support. During Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, Jamaat-e-Islami supported Islamabad, a role that sparks anger among many Bangladeshis today. Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal sentenced several of Jamaat-e-Islami's senior leaders to death for their roles in the war, executing four of them. Many Bangladeshis believe the party must acknowledge its past to regain public trust and become a viable electoral force. But at the rally, supporters offered a different take. C/A posts surplus of over $2bn after 14 years
KARACHI: Pakistan's current account balance recorded a surplus of over 2 billion dollars in the last fiscal year (FY25) for the first time in 14 years, driven by a substantial increase in workers' remittances. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Friday reported that Pakistan has achieved a current account surplus of $2.1 billion in FY25 as against a deficit of $2.1 billion in the previous year (FY24). Khurram Schehzad, Advisor to the finance minister, has said that annual current account surplus has been recorded after a gap of 14 years, and the largest surplus in 22 years. He termed it a key development on the external front of Pakistan's economy, adding that the overall economic performance is encouraging and the country is on the right track due to appropriate policy measures. Monthly basis, the current account balance for the last month (June) of FY25 also posted a surplus of $328 million, compared to deficit of $500 million in June 2024. In addition, current statistics of June 2025 are also better than May 2025, in which the country posted $84 million deficit. Economists attribute this improvement to robust policy measures and consistent efforts by the federal government and the SBP to strengthen the external account and channel remittances through formal avenues. They said that all time high inflows of remittances is the major factor was behind the current account surplus in the last fiscal year. 'The remarkable shift was primarily fuelled by a sharp rise in workers' remittances, which provided crucial support to the external account,' they added. In a historic economic milestone, with a significant 27 percent growth, Pakistan recorded its highest-ever home remittance inflows, exceeding $38 billion during the last fiscal year FY25. According to SBP, Pakistan's trade deficit widened by $4.6 billion to $26.78 billion in FY25, compared to $22.18 billion in FY24. The increase was primarily driven by a higher import bill amid a pickup in economic activity. During the period under review, import bill increased by 11 percent to $59 billion from $53 billion. Exports also posted 4 percent or $1.295 billion growth to reach $32.295 billion in FY25 from $31 billion in FY24. Khurram Schehzad said that Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER) index has also dropped further to 96.6, rendering PKR more competitive against US$, which should support country's exports and keep external account in check. In addition, Pakistan Stock Market continues to be in the top Global rankings, currently 4th best globally Jul-25 to date, he said and added that on Friday Pakistan Equities Market (KSE-100) also crossed 140,000 points during the intraday trading, making a historic mark in its history, with market value crossing Rs 16.8 trillion (close to $60bn).
