River Plate secured a 3-1 home win over Platense in their opening match of Argentina's Clausura championship on Sunday after the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the second half when midfielder Marcos Portillo was sent off.
River got off to the perfect start with a goal in the seventh minute when forward Facundo Colidio cut inside and fired home a stunning right-footed effort.
Platense equalised through forward Ronaldo Martinez's header in the 24th minute but striker Maximiliano Salas netted 15 minutes later to restore River's lead, flicking in a low cross from Colidio to score on his debut for the club.
Platense's task became more difficult when Portillo was sent off in the 75th minute for elbowing Gonzalo Montiel, and Miguel Borja added a third for River in added time to wrap up a comfortable win at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. REUTERS

Arensman soloes to Tour stage victory as Pogacar edges Vingegaard for second

Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retained the overall leader's yellow jersey as he took second place by beating chief rival Jonas Vingegaard, in a two-man sprint finish 1 minute 12 seconds behind Ineos Grenadiers rider Arensman. Defending champion Pogacar extended his lead over Dane Vingegaard in the general classification by six seconds to 4:13 at the end of the Pyrenean stage. The day belonged to Arensman, however, as the Dutchman went solo from the day's breakaway in the penultimate climb to the Col de Peyresourde (7.1 km at 7.8%) before his team car hit and knocked down a spectator amid the usual roadside chaos on the Tour. Arensman never looked back and held firm on his way up to Superbagneres (12.4 km at 7.3%) as Vingegaard attacked several times in an attempt to drop Pogacar. But the world champion did not flinch and easily beat his rival in the final metres to further cement his domination. REUTERS

Evenepoel abandons Tour de France

Find out what's new on ST website and app. BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, France - Belgian Remco Evenepoel abandoned the Tour de France on Saturday during the 14th stage, a 182.6-km mountain trek from Pau to Superbagneres. The Soudal-Quick Step rider, who was third overall, stepped off his bike and entered his team car midway through the ascent of the Col du Tourmalet, the first of four climbs on the day's menu. Evenepoel had struggled in recent days, losing time in the first Pyrenean stage and in Friday's uphill individual time trial. "Yesterday was bad, today was worse," the Olympic champion, who won the stage 5 individual time trial, said on Friday. It got even worse on Saturday as the 25-year-old could not sustain the pace in the gruelling ascent to the Tourmalet (19km at 7.4%) as dozens of riders whizzed past him. After giving his bottle to a child on the side of the road, Evenepoel threw in the towel, a year after finishing third overall on his Tour de France debut. Evenepoel won the Vuelta a Espana in 2022. Bagnaia storms to first pole of season at Czech MotoGP

Find out what's new on ST website and app. BRNO, Czech Republic - Twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia claimed his first pole position of the season at the Czech Republic motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday, edging out Ducati teammate Marc Marquez, who crashed on his final qualifying lap. Bagnaia crossed the line with the fastest time of one minute and 52.303 seconds in mostly sunny conditions in Brno, with Marquez qualifying second and Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo completing the front row. Marquez was chasing an eighth pole of the season but slid into the gravel in the final minutes of second qualifying. "I want to say thanks to my team - they did a fantastic job when I stopped for a little moment. We just did a little adjustment," Bagnaia said. "It will be tricky for the tyres this afternoon," he added, referring to the Czech MotoGP sprint later on Saturday. Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin marked his return to qualifying with a 12th-place finish after missing 10 of the 11 rounds because of injuries. Wrist and ankle injuries suffered in a pre-season crash had ruled the 27-year-old Martin out of the first three rounds before another crash in his first race on board the Aprilia bike in Qatar in April led to a collapsed lung and bruised ribs.
