The political and cultural gravity of cancelling The Late Show With Stephen Colbert
Last night, comedian Stephen Colbert told his TV audience that his eponymous late night show will end its run in May 2026.
The show's network, CBS, cites financial concerns as the reason to cancel The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. However, media analysts and politicians speculate that Colbert's criticism of President Donald Trump may have more to do with this decision than money.
This past Monday, Colbert had criticized CBS parent company Paramount Global for settling a $16 million lawsuit with Trump. Colbert called the settlement a "big fat bribe," as Paramount needs the Trump administration's approval to facilitate a merger between Paramount and Skydance Media.
Today on Commotion, host Elamin Abdelmahmoud speaks with film and TV critics Dylan Green, Rad Simonpillai and Alison Willmore to discuss what the cancellation of The Late Show means for the TV and political landscape.

Elamin: The thing that really struck me about this story, Alison, is that the idea that Colbert himself gets named as one of the things that is making Skydance nervous. Because there's a lot of reporting that suggests that Skydance is like, "Hey, Stephen Colbert is quite critical of Trump politics in general." And that could be a reason to maybe, at a certain point, Trump having some kind of frustration and blocking the merger. He does have that power. He has interfered before or attempted to block a merger before. What are you seeing in terms of your reaction to this story?
Alison: What's disturbing to me — there are many things that are disturbing about this — but I think in particular, the way in which CBS and Paramount are just one of many large media and tech companies who have essentially paid out to the Trump administration in different ways. ABC also did, I think it was a $15 million settlement over the George Stephanopoulos thing. Meta has paid out. Amazon figured out a way to pay millions and millions of dollars for a Melania documentary that we have yet to see. All of these things, it's hard not to read them for — whatever justification that each one gives — as a means of, yes, doing something that looks a lot like a "big fat bribe" to placate the Trump administration.
These are the largest media companies we have and they're immediately bending the knee to the administration. It just gives you that sense that there is no space for even the pretense of a critical voice in any of these large media corporations. In part because Trump has proven so prone to be punitive, but also because none of them seem to want to stand up in any way. They're all immediately saying, "This is the way the wind is blowing, at least for the next few years, and we're going to follow it." That's depressing. It's not a great sign.
Elamin: Your reactions to this entire story, Rad, what do you see?
Rad: It's hard to take the financial reasons as the excuse, even though there's a lot of legitimacy to that, because late night in general has been suffering and people don't tune in for cable, and we've seen other shows fall for this very reason. But when you say financial reason, I mean, that $16 million settlement is a financial reason. The fact that you have this voice on your platform that is critical of that, that is calling it a "bribe" to the Trump administration to make sure that this sale goes through, this merger with Skydance. That's obviously the thing that everyone is honing in on.
If you're thinking about how desperately Paramount wants a sale with Skydance to go through. You think about: what would Skydance want out of a media company? Skydance, their CEO, David Ellison, I mean, this guy's a Trump supporter. This guy's courting [conservative journalist] Bari Weiss to either take over her Free Press organization [her news outlet] or to have her become an editorial overseer in terms of CBS. The idea of Bari Weiss and Stephen Colbert existing at the same media platform, that does not cohere.
Elamin: Colbert is far and away the number one show in that slot. He's way ahead of Jimmy Kimmel, who's number two in that slot. And he's the only late night show that's been growing its audience, according to Nielsen ratings. Dylan, does this surprise you, reading all of this?
Dylan: Not really.
Him and Jon Stewart were pioneers of that particular type of satirical newscasting. And then Colbert transitions into something that he's not playing the character no more. But he has that experience and he has that built-in audience and he's got a lot of power, in that sense. So it shook me to see that they were like, "We're not just replacing something, the whole show is leaving." They're very much sending a statement …. But considering his [Colbert's] reputation, it makes perfect sense to me that they're using him as an opportunity to just be like, "Y'all are next."

Trade top of mind as Canada's premiers are set to hold three-day meeting in Ontario
TORONTO – Tariffs and trade are top of the agenda as the country's premiers arrive in Ontario's cottage country for a three-day meeting that comes at a pivotal time for both Canada-U.S. and domestic relations. The premiers' summer gathering in Muskoka will also feature a Tuesday meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, as trade talks with the United States are expected to intensify. Most of what the premiers are likely to discuss stems from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs: trade negotiations, the direct impact on industries such as steel and aluminum, the increased pushes to remove interprovincial trade barriers and speed up major infrastructure and natural resource projects to counteract the effects of tariffs, as well as Indigenous communities' concerns about them. Day 1 of the premiers' meeting involves discussions with Indigenous leaders including the Assembly of First Nations, the Métis National Council and the Native Women's Association of Canada. Carney himself is fresh off a meeting with hundreds of First Nations chiefs, many of whom have expressed concerns about their rights being sidelined as the prime minister looks to accelerate projects in the 'national interest.' Some of the top priorities premiers are pushing include pipelines and mining in Ontario's Ring of Fire region, and chiefs have said that must not happen by governments skirting their duty to consult. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has served for the past year as head of the Council of the Federation, is host of the meeting and said in a statement that protecting national interests will be top of mind. 'This meeting will be an opportunity to work together on how to respond to President Trump's latest threat and how we can unleash the full potential of Canada's economy,' Ford wrote. Trump and Carney agreed in June at the G7 summit to try and reach a trade deal by July 21 but Trump recently moved that deadline to Aug. 1, while telling Carney he intends to impose 35 per cent across-the-board tariffs on Canada that same day. Carney has said Canada is trying to get an agreement on softwood lumber exports included in the negotiations with the United States. British Columbia Premier David Eby said he intends to raise the issue and others of particular importance to B.C. at the meeting. '(We want to) get access to the same level of attention, for example, on the softwood lumber as Ontario gets on the auto parts sector, (and) that we get the same amount of attention on capital projects as Alberta is currently getting in relation to their proposals,' Eby said last week in Victoria. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been making a big push for new pipelines, but said during a press conference Friday that her focus would also be on premiers working together to address the tariff threat, including interprovincial trade. 'I was really pleased to sign (a memorandum of understanding) with Doug Ford during the time he was here in during Stampede, and other provinces are working on those same kind of collaborative agreements,' she said. 'We need to do more to trade with each other, and I hope that that's the spirit of the discussion.' Smith and Ford signed an MOU earlier this month to study new pipelines and rail lines between provinces, and both premiers also talked about wanting Carney to repeal a number of energy regulations like net-zero targets, the West Coast tanker ban and a proposed emissions cap. Ford has also taken a lead role on increasing interprovincial trade, signing MOUs with several provinces and enacting a law to remove all of Ontario's exceptions to free trade between the provinces and territories. Nova Scotia's Tim Houston is another premier banging the drum of interprovincial trade, saying the trade war is forcing action on it. 'We're seeing the benefit of working together to respond to economic threats from the U.S. by breaking down internal trade barriers and opportunities to expand in other international markets,' he wrote in a statement. Ford has said the premiers will also talk about emergency management, energy security, sovereignty and national security, health, and public safety. The premiers have also been pushing the federal government to reform bail laws and Carney said last week that legislation will be introduced in the fall and he expects to discuss the issue with the premiers on Tuesday. The premiers' summer meeting also signals a changing of the guard, with the role of chair of Council of the Federation moving between provinces annually. Monday Mornings The latest local business news and a lookahead to the coming week. But after Ford is no longer chair, he's not expected to take too much of a back seat on all of the aforementioned issues. He is still premier of the most populous province, has built a strong relationship with Carney, often singing the prime minister's praises, and has done frequent American TV interviews making the case for increased trade over tariffs. Those network appearances, in part, earned him a nickname of 'Captain Canada' — a persona he used to massive political benefit. Adam Pankratz: Roberts and McAfee are right — no one cares what sports personalities think about politics
Major League Baseball rolled into Atlanta, Ga., this past week for the playing of the 2025 All-Star Game. Amid the usual fanfare that accompanies the game and the Home Run Derby, there was a slightly awkward moment on Media Day when ESPN personality Pat McAfee was asked by a reporter why the game was in Atlanta at all, after it had been pulled from the city in 2021 due to voter suppression laws that president Joe Biden had described as 'Jim Crow in the 21st century.' Further adding to the awkward nature of the question was the fact that Dave Roberts, the National League manager for the game, had said in 2021 that he might boycott the game if it remained in Atlanta. Article content Article content Neither McAfee nor Roberts wanted to answer the question this year however, with McAfee's initial reply being, 'I don't know if any of us are the experts or the ones that should be giving the answers on that.' Roberts followed with, 'I'm not a politician … but right now I really choose to just focus on the players and the game …' Article content Article content How times have changed since 2021, and probably for the better. It would be a positive step if the incident reminded us that not everything has to be about politics and, in general, we should not expect in-depth and expert social commentary from sports personalities on all that ails society. Article content It is indeed a curious thing that we even look to a baseball manager or a sports reporter for their views on newly implemented state voting laws. Consider the reverse: asking a politician to explain the infield fly rule or what pitch to throw a batter in a 2-2 count with a man on second and two outs when the last pitch you threw was a cutter. It would be theatre of the most absurd kind. 'I don't know,' would a refreshing answer, although most politicians would likely take a blind stab at it for fear of being caught out for not knowing everything. Article content Article content For this reason, McAfee and Roberts deserve a certain kind of credit for their avoidance of the question. While it is easy to be cynical and say they simply toed the company line (they probably did, by the way), McAfee's assertion that 'I don't know if any of us are the experts …' is nonetheless a refreshingly honest admission that he and his fellow sports experts wouldn't have any idea what they were talking about if they began discussing Georgia's voting laws. Society would be better off if more people could boldly make that statement. Article content Article content Article content In our world today, self-identifying as a non-expert is rare. Rarer still is saying you don't have a political opinion on any given issue. Much of this is likely due to our ability to access second-hand information online or via social media. If someone is not an expert, they can likely find enough information to form a strongly held opinion by quickly brushing up on a few facts for their five minutes in the spotlight, when their true grasp of an issue is actually rather tenuous. Kudos to McAfee and Roberts for not doing that.

I suspect many who opined about it have not even read the extensive cover story in a recent issue of New York Magazine by Simon Van Zuylen Wood that attempted to let Americans know just how angry Canadians are about President Trump's trade war.
