Colm O'Regan: Enid Blyton may be outdated, but my kids are into the adventure

Irish Examiner20-06-2025
Enid Blyton – or Gnid Blitten as I used to pronounce it when I couldn't make out the cursive.
The famous signature that's on the front of about 600 different books is back on a couple of charity shop Famous Five books that are in the house.
The signature of a woman who has been given a fair bit of fairly fair criticism over the last 60 years.
Time has not been kind to attitudes toward the Famous Five.
For decades, they have got a lot of criticism for sexism, racism, classism, outdated stereotypes, and repetitive plots.
Just like the Simpsons or Bosco or Rugrats or Glenroe's Dick Moran, none of the Famous Five seem to age.
Ian Mander, a contributor to an Enid Blyton fansite, has worked out that by last book 'Five Are Together Again', Julian should be 23, Dick and George 22 and Anne 21. Yet still Anne seems nervous about life in general.
But with all that, I'm still reading them to the children. Maybe it's nostalgia, recapturing how I felt. But also, they're still great for an escape.
To a land of cycleable rural roads, cream buns and nothing resembling responsibilities.
The first rule of many books for children is Kill the Parents so that the children can do some adventuring. But the Famous Five is not just escapism for children. It's also for parents.
Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin's approach to childcare is refreshing in that they don't seem to do much of it at all.
They, along with the childrens' parents, send the children off to boarding school, and then during the holidays, don't mind them at all.
Often, the plot hinges on Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin allowing four preteen children to head off into the countryside by themselves.

In Five Get Into Trouble, Uncle Quentin mixes up the date of Easter and attends a conference during the holidays despite all the children coming to visit.
The solution? The children will just go cycling and camping for a week.
Aunt Fanny is worried, but Quentin just says, 'Oh, Fanny, if Julian can't look after the others, he must be a pretty feeble specimen.' A reminder: Julian is 12.
Dick gets kidnapped in this book. I'm not judging Quentin and Fanny, but you'd have to say the two facts are linked.
The Famous Five are not exactly strong on DEI programmes.
Anyone who is different: Roma, circus folk, foreigners, the working class, are all given short shrift and are really only welcomed into the circle of trust when they've saved their lives.
And that's with some of the worst stuff edited out over the years.
There is a lack of garda vetting. Both Jo, an orphan with a jailed thief for a father, and Nobby, an orphan with a thief for an uncle, are handed over to other families after the aforementioned blood relatives are jailed without a single bit of paperwork.
And yet despite all this, my children like the books.
They know the Famous Five, apart from Timmy (who has the best radar of any of them), are sometimes unpleasant children. And the attitudes were different then. But that's fine.
Enid Blyton mightn't have noticed that her heroes can sometimes be little shitebags but sometimes very generous with doling out sandwiches. That level of nuance is good for children now.
They can appreciate a flawed main character and how the past was a cold place if you were different.
Their favourite bits are not always the characters anyway.
It's the idyllic countryside, barrelling out the door to go adventuring, the wearing of ragged old shorts and patched up jumpers, placid horses, secret passageways in wood panelling, and swimming in clean rivers.
That, at least, is timeless.

It will be held at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California with NFL star Travis's team, Kansas City Chiefs, tipped to contest it. During the New Heights podcast, Taylor referred to the number 47 — and eagle-eyed fans noted that her 47th show during The Eras Tour was at the Levi's Stadium. Taylor thanked Travis and his brother, fellow American football star Jason Kelce, for 'screaming for 47 seconds' — and joked she performed in '47,000 countries' on her recent global concert tour. But perhaps the most telling clue is that Taylor was rumoured to have turned down offers to perform at the Super Bowl in order to focus on re-recording her first six albums. But on May 30, she announced she had won the battle to obtain the master recordings of them in a deal with Shamrock Capital. In a letter on her website she wrote: 'All of the music I've ever made . . . now belongs . . . to me.' Looks like it's game on for the Super Bowl. Everything that we know so far about Taylor Swift's new album ‘The Life of a Showgirl'

Titled The Life of a Showgirl, the rumour mill among Swift's millions of fans is already in overdrive. Who will produce it? Which special guests will feature? When will it be released? Given she announced it in a teaser trailer for boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast, New Heights, will the NFL star make a surprise appearance? Despite the album being shrouded in secrecy, Swift's fondness of Easter eggs − secret clues she peppers throughout her songs, album artwork, merchandise and live performances − means eagle-eyed fans are already beginning to piece together its contents, from song titles to its orange and pink colour scheme. Whether you're a bona fide super-Swiftie or just the guardian of one, here's your guide to everything we know so far about The Life of a Showgirl. When will it be released? In Swift's world, nothing is accidental: colour schemes, dates, symbols. Fans know all too well that her favourite number is 13. However, 13 might have competition this time around. The Life of a Showgirl will be Swift's 12th album (not counting her four re-recordings), and she announced it yesterday. More details will inevitably be revealed in the full episode of Kelce's NFL podcast with his brother Jason, which will go live today. All signs thus far hint to the album itself being released on October 12: the US pre-order website says all vinyl editions will be shipped out by that date, and her official team shared 12 photos (all featuring Swift in pink and orange stage costumes) to social media in the announcement. The only reason I could see it being released earlier is that old industry chestnut: the Grammys. The cut-off for eligibility for the 2026 awards is the end of this month. Will there be special guest features? Pop star of the moment and Swift protege Sabrina Carpenter is all but confirmed to appear, given that she featured in one of the 12 photos shared to social media. Carpenter is rumoured to be joining Swift on title track The Life of a Showgirl − strikingly, it would be Swift's first-ever female duet on her own album (she has been joined by male artists, including Ed Sheeran and Kendrick Lamar, but has only ever featured women on 'Vault' tracks on her various re-recordings). ADVERTISEMENT Learn more What will it sound like? Fans around the world will be breathing a collective sigh of relief at the rumours swirling around The Life of a Showgirl's producer team. Apparently, Swift's right-hand-man Jack Antonoff − who has produced her last six albums − will not be involved with the project. Instead, Swedish taste-maker Max Martin − widely credited with Swift's emergence as a leading pop star rather than a fringe country artist − is rumoured to be back on board and behind the producer decks. Fans put the pieces together after Swift's official team shared a playlist to social media, containing songs solely produced/written by Martin and Shellback (Martin's fellow Swede and frequent collaborator). It's not that Antonoff's work with Swift has been unsuccessful: far from it. Two of the Swift albums he produced (Folklore and Midnights) won the Grammy for Album of the Year. But after The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), which many fans considered to be laboured and pretentious, it became apparent that Swift's music needed a burst of fresh energy. And Martin, who helped to give us eternal bangers such as We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Blank Space and ...Ready for It? (as well as countless chart-toppers from Britney, Katy Perry and The Weeknd), could be just the ticket. After two albums of weepy ballads and romantic takedowns, here's hoping for optimistic, cheerful pop. What are the songs? Take this with a pinch of salt, but a leaked tracklist has emerged containing 12 songs. The song titles are as follows: The Fate of Ophelia Elizabeth Taylor Opalite Father Figure Oldest Daughter Ruin the Friendship Actually Romantic Wi$h Li$t Wood Cancelled! Honey The Life of a Showgirl Will there be a tour? Probably. Given the mammoth success of the Eras tour, which spanned 149 shows around the world and clocked in at a gruelling three-hour run time, Swift will have a tough time matching its success. She probably won't try to: not in terms of grand scale, anyway. I predict she will return to her pre-Eras tour model of performing mostly songs from her most recent album, with a few fan-favourite oldies thrown in for good measure. If it is released this year, a world tour presumably won't be on the cards until at least 2027. This would leave Swift free to headline the Super Bowl half-time show − for the first time − next year.
