Bondi faces skepticism on Epstein from chorus of GOP critics

Yahoo12 hours ago
Attorney General Pam Bondi is coming under criticism from congressional Republicans growing increasingly frustrated with her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files scandal, which has badly divided the party and is now throwing work in the House off the rails.
GOP lawmakers joined MAGA World figures in blaming Bondi for earlier this year overhyping the release of the Epstein files, which raised expectations about what information the government had on the disgraced financier and pedophile.
The Department of Justice and FBI eventually released a memo that found the official cause of Epstein's death was suicide and there was no 'client list,' which Bondi at one point had said was on her desk.
The lack of more solid findings backing up theories about Epstein's death and the client list have only made the furor in MAGA World grow hotter, despite efforts by President Trump to cool it.
'She's probably a great attorney general, but she clearly has dropped the ball on that by saying 'the list is sitting on my desk' and then 'there isn't a list,'' Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) said.
Rep. Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), a supporter of more Epstein disclosures, sits on a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee task force charged with the disclosure of federal secrets.
He expressed frustration over Bondi's move to convene influencers at the White House in May to claim there was more to the Epstein files.
'I wish she would communicate with the task force that I'm on, the disclosure task force,' Burlison said. 'We're members of Congress. Instead of bringing us in the loop, she brings in social media influencers. That, to me, is something I wish she would do differently.'
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has sought to quell the outrage even as he has called for transparency, and Trump has insisted that Bondi's standing is solid.
But there has been a clear split in MAGA World and in the GOP ranks between those loyal to Bondi and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino, who on Friday was rumored to be considering leaving his post over the Epstein ordeal. Bongino is back at work now, but tensions appear to remain.
When pressed if he has faith in Bondi and Bongino, Burchett said, 'I have faith in Dan Bongino.'
Trump ally Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has stressed the need for a special counsel to investigate the handling of the files. Far-right activist Laura Loomer, another staunch Trump ally, was early to call for a special counsel probe and has bashed Bondi, arguing she hasn't been transparent.
'The president and this team are always in contact with the president's supporters, with voices of many kinds from both sides of the aisle,' press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday when asked if the White House has been directly in touch with MAGA influencers who aren't satisfied with the Epstein case.
Leavitt also called Bondi, as well as Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel, 'great patriots.'
'They spent many months going through all of the files related to Jeffrey Epstein,' she said. 'The president has been transparent. He has followed through with his promises to the American people.'
Two sources told The Hill on Thursday that Johnson is discussing a measure in support of disclosing more information related to the Epstein investigation.
The measure could take the pressure off of Bondi and minimize the outrage — and it comes as House Democrats push an amendment that calls for the full release of the materials related to the case.
However, a key difference in the measure Johnson is discussing is that the names of victims and whistleblowers should be shielded.
Some argue Bondi has solid support from Trump and that others calling for a probe could face a falling out with the White House team.
'Bondi is fine. Loomer [is] looking at a big loss,' one source close to the White House said.
Some outside observers concurred, predicting that as with other Trump controversies, people will eventually drop it and back Trump's message.
'There are certainly several factions of the president's base that are divided on this issue but eventually they are going to fall into line,' said Ford O'Connell, a GOP strategist.
'[Bondi] is the first attorney general Trump has had that can drive a message,' O'Connell continued. 'That is very, very important in that role because a lot of people think they know the law and they have no idea what the law is.'
Firebrand support
Bondi seemed to have fostered a relationship with one of the highest-profile members calling for the release of more Epstein materials: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
When Bondi last week announced she would drop charges against Michael Kirk Moore, a Utah doctor who was accused of throwing away COVID-19 vaccines and distributing fraudulent vaccination cards, Bondi credited Greene for bringing the case to her attention.
Some firebrand members of Congress who have built social media followings but also rely on maintaining a good relationship with Trump are following the president's lead on the matter.
'I think the Justice Department is doing a fantastic job, and they've got a lot on their plate,' Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) said. 'And quite frankly, she's having to clean up a Justice Department that the Biden administration broke. In regards to the Epstein files, I mean, I trust her judgment. I trust the president's judgment.'
Trump was asked Wednesday if he would consider appointing a special counsel. He distanced himself from the situation, telling reporters, 'I have nothing to do with it,' after earlier in the day saying the Epstein situation is a hoax started by Democrats. Leavitt said Thursday he would not recommend a special prosecutor in the case.
Bondi toured the former Alcatraz prison Thursday in San Francisco with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, while the White House fielded questions over her handling of the Epstein files.
Inside the White House, aides 'are stunned and there's genuine confusion around how this was handled,' a source familiar with the thinking of the team told The Hill.
Aides aren't necessarily in Bondi or Bongino's camp but are seeking an explanation for Trump now calling for supporters to move on from the Epstein files. Without that, 'it's going to stick around and chip away at trust,' the source said.
MAGA baggage
Additional issues are likely hurting Bondi, a former Florida attorney general named as Trump's pick to lead the DOJ just hours after former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) withdrew himself from consideration for the role.
Gaetz's nomination was hailed by MAGA supporters despite the controversies that have dogged him.
Bondi, a senior adviser on Trump's first impeachment defense team, also worked at lobbying firm Ballard Partners, which was founded by Brian Ballard, a Florida lobbyist who was involved with Trump's 2016 campaign.
Florida sources say the dynamic with Bondi in the MAGA movement has always been complicated.
'Ultimately Attorney General Bondi has a constituency of one,' said Republican donor Dan Eberhart, referring to the president. 'Beware the fate of Jeff Sessions.'
Eberhart added that the GOP grassroots in Florida seem torn over Bondi.
One Republican strategist acknowledged that Bondi 'over-promised and underdelivered' in her overall handling of the case.
'You bet she did,' the strategist said. 'This has been an administration that has been on offense on just about every possible thing that could come at them and this is the one thing that they did not unite on it.'
'Should you expect transparency? Yes, but there are certain aspects of the law that are not going to turn this into a tell all,' the strategist continued, referring to potential efforts to protect Epstein's victims.
The strategist noted that Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, a Trump ally who represented the president in his 2024 criminal hush money trial in New York City, would back Bondi.
'Todd Blanche is going to bat for her,' the strategist said.

GOP Rep. Tim Burchett doubles down on call for release of Epstein files

Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett on Sunday again called for the release of the Department of Justice's evidence against the late accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, part of a growing cadre of Republicans calling for transparency in the case. Speaking with "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz, Burchett said he wanted the Epstein files to be released, but cautioned against releasing material that might expose the identities of victims and others in the files who may be innocent. But Burchett pushed back against criticism leveled by President Donald Trump, who earlier this week called Republicans demanding the release of the documents 'foolish' and baselessly claimed the Epstein files were a hoax concocted by Democrats. 'Was I a little ticked off he said that stuff? Sure, I was, but I'm a big boy, Ma'am,' Burchett said. 'We're playing in the big leagues right now.' Trump has since directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to move to unseal grand jury evidence in Epstein's case, which Burchett called 'a start.' 'I don't think we're ever going to get to the bottom of … all of it, Ma'am,' Burchett said. 'You know, this town doesn't give up its secrets very easy.' Asked by Raddatz if he believed Bondi should resign, Burchett said he criticized her communication on the issue but stopped short of calling for her to step down. 'I have a saying: It's not how you start, it's how you finish. If she finishes strong on this, then I'm all for it,' Burchett said. 'I'm sure the learning curve is steep, and I think she blundered in the beginning, I really do, as most Americans do.'

A rush transcript of "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" airing on Sunday, July 20, 2025 on ABC News is below. This copy may not be in its final form, may be updated and may contain minor transcription errors. For previous show transcripts, visit the "This Week" transcript archive. MARTHA RADDATZ, ABC 'THIS WEEK' ANCHOR: And our thanks to Rachel. I'm joined now by GOP Congressman Tim Burchett of Tennessee, who has called for more transparency in the Epstein case. Good morning, Congressman. You've co-sponsored the bipartisan Epstein Files Transparency Act, which would force the House to vote on whether or not to release all government files on Epstein. What exactly do you think the government is withholding here? REP. TIM BURCHETT, (R) TENNESSEE: Well, that's the million-dollar question, ma'am. I -- I applaud the president and Attorney General Bondi for -- for wanting to release the grand jury files. I believe that will pretty much cover everything. But I would give everybody a caveat or a -- that's a big word, but a warning that just because somebody flew on a plane doesn't mean they're a daggum pedophile, you know. I -- I'm -- I have a lot of wealthy friends. I -- I aspire to be wealthy, but I've taken a vow of poverty because of my daughter rides horses. So -- but I have a lot of wealthy friends, and they fly on people's planes. And their plane will be down, and they'll say, hey, we're going somewhere, and we've got an extra seat, do you want to go? And they don't even know the person on the plane. So, you know, that's -- that's one of the things I worry about too, because I -- you know, President Trump admitted that he flew on -- on his daggum plane. And -- and so, I worry about some innocent people. I worry about -- there's over 1,000 people that this dirtbag apparently offended. And currently, I believe the devil's dealing with him. RADDATZ: But -- but, Congressman -- BURCHETT: But I worry about some of those innocent names being out on that too as well. Yes, ma'am. Go ahead. RADDATZ: So -- so, Congressman, you think unsealing the grand jury records is enough for you now? BURCHETT: I think it's a start. I don't think we're ever going to get to the bottom of anything -- every -- all of it, ma'am. I mean, look at the Kennedy assassination. Do you actually believe Lee Harvey Oswald shot President Kennedy from the front and the back, and this magic bullet appears an hour later in a -- in -- on a hospital gurney and -- and in an emergency room. I -- you know, this town doesn't give up its secrets very easy. And I -- and I'd warn people too, now we're getting a hold of this stuff. What happened the last four years under the Biden administration? Senator Dick Durbin blocked my senator, Marsha Blackburn, who valiantly fought to get those records out and only -- and I could pretty much like it wasn't anything. And the media backed him up on it. And now all of a sudden the media thinks they've got something and it's -- it's -- I -- it's leveled towards Trump. But I -- you know, my history with this issues goes back a little way. I spent 16 years in the Tennessee General Assembly and I passed and attempted to pass some -- some of the toughest laws in the country, some of the first (INAUDIBLE) internet crimes against children. I've promoted the death penalty, chemical castration of child molesters and all those bills were ruled unconstitutional. RADDATZ: Congressman -- BURCHETT: Yes, ma'am. RADDATZ: Congressman, I -- I want to go back again. So, you no longer believe or -- or are demanding that all the Epstein files be released? BURCHETT: No, ma'am. I want them -- I want them released. But my warning is this, let's make sure that we're not releasing the names of some of these who -- who were then children, now adults, that were abused by this dirtbag, Epstein, and let's make sure we don't release things that are -- that have innocent names on them. That's my -- that's been my concern with -- with the original -- I thought they were dragging their feet. In the beginning, under the Biden administration, they never did anything. And now all of a sudden it's become a political issue. It's not a political issue with me, ma'am. I've held the hands of people that have been molested, and they carry a life sentence. I just want to make sure that -- RADDATZ: You've -- you've been very critical of -- I'm sorry. You -- you have been very critical of Pam Bondi during this. As the president said, he thinks she's handled it well. So, where is the disconnect there? And -- and do you think she should resign? BURCHETT: I think her communication with us early on was -- was not as goo. I mean that -- the binder, for instance, that she put out, I was very excited about that. But then I found the contents of it. I think it was her limited knowledge and her -- and taking advice from the wrong people, which you do a lot of in Washington. There's plenty of people to give you advice. But when it turns out not good, you turn around and they're nowhere to be found. And I think that's what she did in the beginning. I think if she turns the corner, I'll have -- I have a saying, it's not how you start, it's how you finish. If she finishes strong on this than I'm -- then I'm all for it. I'm sure the learning curve is steep and I -- I think she blundered in the beginning. I really do. As most Americans do. Because those -- that -- what those whites (ph) -- that-- that white notebook that those young folks, those influencers walk out with, I thought that was it. And then when I started digging into it, it was stuff that I -- and I'm -- I'm -- I'm a -- I like -- I like my postings on Twitter but -- or X, but that's about the limit of my computer knowledge, but even I could find those things on the internet that were already out there. So, I think they blundered in the beginning, but I think they're -- they're going to finish strong. Again, I -- I don't know that -- RADDATZ: Well, President Trump -- BURCHETT: Go ahead, ma'am. RADDATZ: Thank you. BURCHETT: Go ahead. I'm sorry. RADDATZ: President Trump has started claiming this is all a hoax, that it's being perpetrated by the Democrats. He says, some of his own supporters who he labeled stupid and foolish Republicans, you are obviously one of those people who wants this released. What's your reaction to how President Trump has handled it? BURCHETT: Well, yes, ma'am. I -- it's his strategy. I -- I -- you know, everybody questions President Trump's strategy. They said the big, beautiful bill wasn't going to get out (ph) on the Fourth of July. Trump comes out and says, I don't care when you put it out. I said, I don't care if you put it out on July 40th (ph), get the bill out. I just want it out. And what happened, daggum, we passed it on the Fourth of July. His cryptocurrency bill, my own Senator Haggerty had the Genius Act, part of that, and everybody said it was dead. It wasn't going anywhere. And there I am on a -- on a phone call. I'm in -- in a meeting with -- with the -- with -- with our speaker and our -- and our whip, Tom Emmert, and 10 or 12 fellow conservatives that had concerns about it. And who -- lo and behold, President Trump calls, answers all of our questions. And the bill passes. And he signed it on Friday. So, you know, I think to underestimate Donald J. Trump is -- is -- is -- is a mistake in this -- in this town. And I think we're learning that. And I -- I -- you know, that's his strategy. I -- was I a little ticked off he said that stuff? Sure, I was. But I'm a big boy, ma'am. I'm in the -- we're playing in the big leagues right now. And, you know, I get criticized every day. I get death threats on a pretty regular basis. So, my skin's about that thick right now. I think I can take a little criticism. But his strategy is -- RADDATZ: It sounds -- it sounds like you can.

Off-duty law enforcement officer shot at Fort Washington Park in NYC, police sources say

An off-duty law enforcement officer was shot overnight at Fort Washington Park in Manhattan, police sources say. The shooting happened steps from the historic Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge. The NYPD says one person was taken into custody and they're searching for a second. Officers responded around 11:50 p.m. Saturday to the park's lower deck, where they found the 42-year-old victim with gunshot wounds to his face and arm. He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in stable condition and is expected to survive his injuries. Police sources say the victim is a U.S. Customs and Border Protections officer. Sources also say the shooting stemmed from a dispute, and there was an exchange of gunfire between the victim and suspects. Two people fled the scene on a motorized scooter, according to police. One has been taken into custody, and the search continues for the other. People out exercising along the Hudson River Greenway early Sunday morning said they were shocked to see the crime scene. "It's very concerning. I was coming down here on the Greenway and I saw the crime scene," Englewood, New Jersey resident Marcelo Candeo said. "I'm very shocked and surprised. I hope he's doing well and he gets a full recovery. I'm very shocked." "This is the most peaceful part of New York I can find, so it's a shock to hear that anything like this happened," Kips Bay resident Kovan Pillai said. "I have no idea what this place is like late at night, I imagine, now that you tell me this, that it's probably not the safest of places to be." Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-57-PISTA (74782) for Spanish. You can also submit a tip via their website. All calls are kept confidential.
