Indore retains top spot in cleanliness survey
In the 'Swachh Shahar' category for cities with more than 10 lakh population, Ahmedabad secured the first position while Bhopal and Lucknow followed it on the next two spots in the annual survey.
The results of the Swachh Survekshan were announced on Thursday.
According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, 14 crore people participated in the survey through face-to-face interactions, the Swachhata App, MyGov, and social media platforms in over 4,500 cities.
A total of 78 awards were presented this year across four categories -- Super Swachh League Cities; Top three clean cities in five population categories; Special Category: Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, SafaiMitra Suraksha, Mahakumbh; and State Level Awards -- Promising clean city of a state or Union Territory.
Under the new category -- 'Super Swachh League' -- Noida emerged the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore in the three to 10 lakh population category.

The culprit? A lingering pile of legacy waste at the Dadumajra dump site, which continues to haunt the city's sanitation scorecard. Despite applying for the top-tier ranking, Chandigarh managed only 3 stars, and officials say the 80,000 metric tonnes of unprocessed legacy waste still lying at the Dadumajra site is the main reason for the downgrade. The Chandigarh municipal corporation has been working to clear the site, but the project — which began seven years ago — has been plagued by delays, missed deadlines, and now, monsoon rains. The current deadline to finish the job is the end of July, but with heavy showers slowing progress, officials admit the timeline may stretch by another one to two months. "Legacy waste clearance is the most critical factor in achieving a 7-star rating," said a senior official. "We've made significant progress, but the final stretch is proving to be the toughest." The Dadumajra site originally had three massive dumps, built up over decades due to years of unprocessed garbage. The first two — each around 5 lakh metric tons — were cleared by Dec 2022 and Jan 2025, respectively. The third and final dump, though smaller at 2.5 lakh metric tons, has been the most stubborn. Work on this last phase began in Jan 2025, and while more than half has been cleared, the remaining waste is proving difficult to remove due to weather and operational delays. The agency responsible has already been penalized and served notices for breaching deadlines. Adding to the challenge, officials revealed that from January 2024, the city's waste wasn't being fully processed, leading to fresh accumulation. It wasn't until February 2024, with the launch of new wet and mixed waste processing plants, that full-scale processing resumed.

Chandigarh scored a dismal 14 marks in the source segregation category — a key component in the ministry of housing and urban affairs' cleanliness rankings — raising serious questions about both civic enforcement and public participation. The low score isn't just a number; it's a reflection of a broken system where citizens routinely hand over mixed garbage to door-to-door collectors, and the municipal corporation (MC) fails to enforce segregation at the source. While segregation is happening at material recovery facilities (MRFs) across the city, the damage is already done by the time the waste reaches there. "We gave people bins, we gave them instructions — but what we didn't give was accountability," said a source within the MC. Back in June 2017, the MC launched a grand campaign at Tagore Theatre, distributing green and blue bins to residents with much fanfare. The goal was simple: separate wet and dry waste at the source. But the initiative fizzled out, with most households reverting to old habits and the MC failing to follow up with strict ground-level enforcement. Mayor dedicates achievement to people, sanitary workers
Guntur: Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra announced that the prestigious award received by the Guntur Municipal Corporation in the 'Super Swachh League Cities 2024–25' competition, conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission is dedicated to the citizens and sanitation workers of Guntur city. Addressing the media along with GMC commissioner Puli Srinivasulu at the GMC Council Hall on Friday, he expressed pride over receiving national-level recognition. He stated that the award was the result of the efforts of the officials, sanitation workers, and active participation of the public, which helped highlight Guntur's prominence at the national level. He said that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and guidance from Union Minister of State for Rural Development Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar, he is developing Guntur city. He mentioned that even officials from Indore, known for its sanitation achievements, had inquired about Guntur's progress after this recognition. He further said that inspired by the award, the city administration aims to improve street lighting, sanitation, drinking water supply, and overall infrastructure in Guntur city. GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu said 23 cities across India that previously ranked high and currently maintain superior cleanliness standards were declared 'Super Swachh League Cities.' Among cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakhs, Guntur city bagged the Award. He attributed this success to the combined efforts of elected representatives, officials, NGOs, stakeholders, and sanitation workers. He highlighted that the regularisation of sanitation workers, provision of essential equipment and vehicles, enhancement of sanitary divisions, and guidance from district collector Nagalakshmi helped a lot. He further stated that the city administration is committed to maintaining this national recognition and transforming Guntur into a plastic-free, clean, and beautiful city. Plans are underway to establish a C&D waste treatment plant, Sewage Treatment Plant and vending zones within GMC limits. Additional Commissioner Challa Obulesu was present.
