Kerala announces longer class hours, working Saturdays for high schools
Addressing the concerns, Sivankutty pointed out that several other states, including Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh already operate on more extended school calendars. He also highlighted that Central Board schools like CBSE and ICSE within Kerala have longer academic hours than the state-run schools.Sivankutty accused opposition-backed teacher unions of politicising the issue. He recalled that during the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) regime, class hours were extended until 4:30 pm based on the Labba Committee's recommendations, without any significant backlash. 'No one protested then—so we must ask what's really behind the resistance now,' he said. The minister reaffirmed the government's openness to dialogue. If there are genuine concerns, we are willing to sit down and discuss them. Any change in education laws must go through the Legislative Assembly—not through court interventions or public outcry,' he added. The updated academic year will consist of 198 working days for Classes 1 to 4, 200 days for Classes 5 to 7, and 204 for Classes 8 to 10. In addition to academics, the calendar incorporates awareness campaigns, cultural events, scholarships, and support for differently-abled students to promote a holistic and inclusive education system.Despite the controversies, the state government remains firm on its goal to uphold instructional quality while complying with legal mandates.(With PTI inputs)- Ends

Chennai cyber crime cops quiz Madurai Adheenam
1 2 Madurai: A Chennai cyber crime police team on Sunday conducted inquiry with the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Adheenam, Sri La Sri Harihara Sri Gnana Sambandha Desika Swamigal, at the Adheenam mutt in Madurai in connection with the case against him for his alleged provocative remarks that could incite conflict between religious communities. The Adheenam had claimed a conspiracy to murder him, suggesting links to Pakistan and Muslim men, following a road accident at Ulundurpet in Kallakurichi on May 2. Though his claims were later found to be entirely false after a police investigation into the road accident involving his car, his claims had by then been widely shared on media and social media platforms. On Saturday, the Chennai principal sessions court granted the Adheenam conditional anticipatory ball. On Sunday, a Chennai cyber crime police team came to the mutt near Meenakshi Amman temple and conducted an inquiry with the Adheenam. His advocate told reporters that the Adheenam fully cooperated with the inquiry despite undergoing a surgery recently and suffering from illness. "The police did not permit even a helper inside during the inquiry which lasted around 45 minutes. The Adheenam told us that he answered all the questions of the police," added the advocate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Meanwhile, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran hit out at the police and state govt for 'going after' elderly spiritual and religious leaders and gurus like the Madurai Adheenam even when they are aged and suffering from illness. Kerala govt to meet school managements over revised timings
Agency: PTI Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20 (PTI) The Kerala General Education Department on Sunday said it would hold discussions with representatives of school managements in the state regarding the change in school timings. The discussion will be held in the chamber of General Education Minister V Sivankutty on July 23 afternoon, an official statement said. One representative from each management is expected to participate in the meeting, during which the minister will explain the circumstances that prompted the government to revise school timings, it added. Sivankutty recently clarified that school timings cannot be changed to 'accommodate a particular community", as the government must consider the interests of lakhs of students. He stated that the decision to extend school hours by 30 minutes was based on the directions of the Kerala High Court, and anyone aggrieved by it can seek legal remedies. As per the revised schedule, high school students (classes 8 to 10) will spend an additional 15 minutes each in the morning and afternoon on all working days—except Fridays—to help schools meet the mandated 1,100 instructional hours annually. The minister's clarification comes in the wake of mounting criticism from Muslim organisations, including the Sunni clerical body Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, which contends that the 'extended hours will interfere with religious education." Sivankutty had said the decision was based on a Kerala High Court ruling in August 2024, which deemed the earlier academic calendar—featuring 25 working Saturdays—"invalid" due to the absence of official government sanction. Task force formed to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Tripura: CM
Agartala, Jul 20 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said his government has constituted a special task force to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the northeastern state. His comment comes a day after Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma revealed the formation of a special task force by the West Tripura district police to 'detect and deport' the illegal immigrants staying in the state, to their country of origin. 'The Centre has already decided to accept those people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have taken refuge in India before 2014 due to religious persecution, he told the reporters. He was referring to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which paves the way for granting Indian nationality to undocumented non-Muslim migrants — Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians — from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who came to India before December 31, 2014. 'There are attempts to create confusion on the issue. We have already constituted a special task force to identify if there is any influx or infiltration after December 2014. We will not accept those who came after December 2014 as per the Centre's decision and have been staying here illegally," he said. Notably, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited a delegation of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) for a meeting on July 23 to discuss the concerns raised by it about the possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's electoral rolls. Debbarma, in a social media post on Saturday, said, 'After we raised our concerns about possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's voter roll and demanded a Bihar-like Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the Election Commission of India has called us for a meeting on July 23 to discuss these issues."
