Global Tourism Elites Eye New Opportunities in Hainan, China
Themed 'Travel to Meet the World,' the event showcased the province's advancements in enhancing international visitor experiences, such as payment facilitation, multi-language services, visa-free policies, and expanded air routes. Enterprises from 18 cities and counties across the island showcased their unique cultural, tourism, and creative products, engaging in one-on-one discussions with global travel agencies to strengthen tourism cooperation.
Zhu Shanzhong, ambassador of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, pointed out that Hainan is giving full play to the policies of the Free Trade Port and leveraging its rich tourism resources and industrial integration system so as to accelerate the construction of an international tourism consumption center.
'Hainan is home to not only a breathtaking natural landscape but also a vibrant and ever-growing cultural heritage,' said Peter Semone, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association. He believed that through innovation, regional cooperation, and sustainable practice, Hainan could build a 'meaningful Asia-Pacific tourism economy,' improve service quality while protecting tourism resources, and be a benchmark for tourism development in China with a notable influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Cynthia Tan, deputy president of the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association and executive director of Roystar Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd., praised the abundant tourism resources in Hainan. Lee Kwah Ho, CEO of South Korean travel agency LK Global, said, 'I can't help but recommend Hainan's offerings, especially premium hotels, to South Korean tourists. The next step is to partner with Hainan in high-end coastal vacations.'
'We plan to join hands with scenic spots in Hainan to design programs for Hong Kong students' field trips,' said Florence Lo, director of iStudent Tour (HK) Limited.
According to the Hainan Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, TV, and Sports, as China's only tropical island province and its largest Free Trade Port, the province warmly invites global visitors to embark on a vibrant tropical journey, experiencing a modern and dynamic Hainan brimming with opportunities.

Sunway Construction shares rise after MACC clears group from graft probe
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Sunway Construction Group Bhd's shares on Bursa Malaysia went up in the early session today after the company and its subsidiaries were spared from an ongoing anti-graft probe involving one of its employees. At 10.15 am, the counter rose 10 sen to RM5.86, with a total of 1.85 million shares changing hands. RHB Investment Bank Bhd believes that the latest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) update may instil confidence towards the group's established robust mechanisms and systems that uphold anti-corruption compliance, as the case remains an isolated one. 'The adoption and certification of the ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) demonstrates its commitment to ethical business practices, requiring substantial financial investment in system development, amongst others. 'We think that Sunway Construction will continuously enhance processes and internal controls, moving forward,' it said in a note today. On Tuesday, the group said that it had received an official written confirmation from MACC clarifying that the scope of its investigation pertained solely to the personal conduct of the individual concerned, and that it was an isolated case. 'MACC has further confirmed that neither Sunway Construction nor any of its subsidiaries are under investigation under any provision of the MACC Act 2009,' it said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia. Meanwhile, CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd sees this development as a positive catalyst while also removing a key overhang on the stock. MyJalan app proves successful as 11,860 road damage complaints resolved, says works minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The Works Ministry (KKR) has resolved 11,860, or 95.19 per cent, of the 12,459 road damage complaints received through the MyJalan app, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The remaining 599 complaints (4.81 per cent) are still under investigation or pending action, he told the Dewan Rakyat during the winding-up session for his ministry on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) today. Since the app's launch in August 2023, 54,330 users have registered and submitted 40,938 complaints. Of these, 28,479 cases (69.57 per cent) were redirected under the No Wrong Door policy to relevant agencies, as they involved roads outside KKR's jurisdiction. These include municipal, village, agricultural, state and private roads managed by local councils, the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT), the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) and state governments. On highway infrastructure, Nanta said traffic on the East–West Highway remains manageable based on 2024 census data. However, a RM100 million rehabilitation project is underway to upgrade road surfaces, lighting and structural components, with completion expected by 2026. The scope includes preliminary studies, land surveys, streetlight and traffic signal maintenance, and routine upkeep of both pavement and non-pavement infrastructure. He also noted that the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has implemented Building Information Modelling (BIM) across all stages of highway projects. This includes the planning, construction, operations and upgrades, in line with the government's digital transformation and sustainability agenda outlined in the 13MP and National Construction Policy 2030. Since Jan 1, 2023, the BIM policy has been piloted on key projects including the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Highway widening, Kajang SILK Highway expansion, East Coast Expressway Phase 1 flood mitigation, Sungai Perak Bridge and selected rest areas along the North–South Expressway. LLM has initiated training for BIM roles such as managers, coordinators and modellers, and is developing BIM Infra Guidelines in collaboration with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and academic institutions. Upcoming projects incorporating BIM include the West Ipoh Span Expressway (WISE), Phase 3 of the SILK Highway widening and the Juru–Sungai Dua traffic dispersal project along the North–South Expressway. — Bernama

Anwar Ibrahim outlines fiscal priorities, pledges sustainable growth with 3pc deficit for 2025
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The country's financial management must be carried out prudently and with discipline, in line with the spirit of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023 (FRA), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stressed on this while chairing the Fiscal Policy Committee (FPC) meeting, which is an important platform for drafting clear fiscal policies and setting the direction of the country's economy. He said the Madani Government needs to continue to find a balance between efforts to maintain the momentum of economic growth and ensuring the country's fiscal position remains sustainable, especially in the volatile global economic environment. 'Although the world is still grappling with uncertainty, the national economy remains strong with a growth rate of 4.4 per cent for the first half of 2025. 'The unemployment rate has also dropped to three per cent, the lowest in 10 years,' the prime minister said in a post on his Facebook page yesterday. He added that the government has successfully reduced the fiscal deficit from 5.5 per cent in 2022 to 4.1 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024, an achievement that demonstrates its commitment to responsible fiscal management. Meanwhile, in a separate statement following the FPC meeting yesterday, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) said as the Madani Government embarks on the 13th Malaysia Plan, fiscal space must be optimised to deliver public investments that materially transform the economy (Raise the Ceiling) and improve the rakyat's quality of life (Raise the Floor). In 2025, Malaysia's economy is expected to grow between 4.0 per cent and 4.8 per cent, underpinned by strong domestic demand, moderate inflation and a stable labour market. 'The FPC meeting today reaffirmed the government's commitment to reducing the 3.8 per cent fiscal deficit target for 2025 and subsequently achieving a deficit of three per cent or below in the medium term, in line with the FRA commitment,' said Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister. The session also serves as an important step in setting the government's fiscal trajectory ahead of the forthcoming Budget 2026, scheduled to be tabled on October 10, 2025. Pursuant to the provisions of the FRA, the MoF said the Madani Government is undertaking the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy (MTRS) to broaden the revenue base and establish a more progressive tax system, while strengthening compliance with international best practices. 'Moving forward, priority will be placed on addressing leakages and enhancing efficiency through measures such as the phased implementation of the e-invoicing system. 'These efforts underscore the government's resolve to build a fairer, more resilient and sustainable fiscal framework that supports long-term economic growth and the well-being of the people,' said the ministry. — Bernama
