Sibu dad hopes daughter's gift of sight inspires others
WHILE coping with his daughter's death, a father has found solace in her final act of generosity – the donation of her corneas.
Prior to her death in 2022 due to a stroke, Kho Sze Yii, 30, had pledged to donate her corneas to give someone else the gift of sight, her father Kho Kim Hock, 70, said.
'Through her gift, her eyes live on and continue to see the beauty of this world,' Kim Hock said through tears as he was consoled by Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng at an event highlighting organ donation.
During the Hospital Sibu Organ Donation 5km Fun Run in Permai Lake Garden, hospital director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu presented Kim Hock with a medal to recognise the selfless act.
Kim Hock shared that Sze Yii's cornea donation had enabled his family to find peace.
'It brings us comfort to know that the recipient is able to see loved ones, to see the sunrise and beauty of nature,' said the Johor-born Kim Hock, who operates a coffeeshop in Sibu, Sarawak.
He is calling on Malaysians to consider becoming organ donors.
'We hope more people can follow my daughter's example.
'Talk to your family. Sign up,' he said.
'You never know which part of you might change someone's world,' he added.
Kim Hock also advised people to take care of their health and go for regular checkups.
Dr Nanthakumar said the transplant of Sze Yii's donated corneas was successfully carried out in the same year as her passing.
He expressed hope that Kim Hock's story would inspire others.
'Stories like this help break the stigma around organ donation,' Dr Nanthakumar added. — By ANDY CHUA

In a statement today, the ministry said all candidates who accepted the offer would report for duty at MOH health facilities nationwide in phases starting Oct 2. The ministry said the exercise involved contract officers from several cohorts and was being carried out in phases to preserve their seniority and safeguard their welfare. "The permanent appointments must be implemented in phases as they involve officers from various contract cohorts, and are aimed at preserving their welfare and seniority,' according to the statement. The ministry said an engagement session had been held with the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Public Services Commission (SPA) and the Public Service Department (JPA) to ensure the appointment process proceeded as planned. The MOH also expressed its commitment to ensuring the smooth implementation of the appointment process. "This is in line with the MOH's strategic move to strengthen the country's public healthcare system by ensuring that critical positions are filled in an organised and balanced manner, based on current service needs,' the statement said. Francis Ford Coppola recovers after scheduled heart procedure in Rome
ROME: Francis Ford Coppola, the acclaimed American director of 'The Godfather' movies and 'Apocalypse Now,' underwent a non-emergency cardiac procedure in a Rome hospital and is doing fine, he and a U.S.-based representative said on Tuesday. 'Mr. Coppola went in for a scheduled update procedure' performed by renowned Italian-born cardiologist Dr. Andrea Natale 'and is resting nicely,' the representative said in response to Italian media reports that the director was hospitalised. 'All is well.' Coppola, 86, has been a patient of Natale for more than 30 years, the representative said. The filmmaker was admitted on Tuesday to the Policlinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in the Italian capital, news agency ANSA reported. The U.S.-based representative declined to give any details about the nature of Coppola's medical procedure, but said: 'There was not an emergency. He went to the hospital in a car. He had a scheduled appointment.' Coppola posted a photograph of himself on Instagram appearing relaxed and smiling with a message reassuring fans, 'I am well.'
