Wooing more Chinese tourists through social media
This includes partnerships with online influencers to target younger, tech-savvy Chinese visitors, said Tourism Malaysia.
Such was part of the agency's efforts to reach out to the Chinese market for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), seeing that many from the Middle Kingdom are turning to social media for travel information.
'We have also noticed a strong shift towards independent travel, especially among younger Chinese visitors who rely heavily on digital platforms like Xiaohongshu, Bilibili and Dianping for travel inspiration and planning.
'This trend reflects a desire for flexibility, personalisation, and real-time access to information and recommendations,' Tourism Malaysia told The Star .
China now ranks as the third-largest source of international visitors to Malaysia, following Singapore and Indonesia.
The agency, under the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, was asked to comment on the role of social media and influencers in guiding tourists from China on their visit to Malaysia.
From following trends like cool photo spots to viral food videos, a growing number of Chinese tourists were using social media to plan their travel itineraries here.
'It is undeniable that social media platforms play a role in promoting Malaysia to Chinese visitors as their content shapes perceptions, builds interest, and directly influences travel decisions.
'For example, with more than 300 million monthly active users, Xiaohongshu plays a critical role in shaping consumer travel choices in China, especially among younger audiences and free independent travellers,' Tourism Malaysia said.
These types of content strongly influence young travellers, helping to drive viral trends, such as visiting specific photo spots or trying iconic local foods, which can inspire large numbers of followers to visit the same places.
Examples of such trends are taking pictures in front of the Maybank branch in Gaya Street, Sabah or trying roti tisu at mamak shops.
Previously, Tourism Malaysia announced that it will operate an official Xiaohongshu account, publishing engaging travel content from every state in Malaysia.
Tourism Malaysia said its marketing plan for China for VM2026 also included developing Mandarin-language content and marketing materials to better connect with Chinese visitors, highlighting cultural festivals, eco-adventures and luxury offerings.
'We also plan to collaborate with Chinese tour operators to create tailored travel experiences that cater to Chinese preferences, including shopping, cultural experiences, and eco-tourism,' it said.
To attract Chinese Muslim travellers, efforts will also be made to highlight Malaysia's strengths in halal-friendly tourism and wellness retreats.
'We will also be increasing collaboration with airlines and travel agencies to boost direct flights and offer attractive package deals through travel agencies,' Tourism Malaysia said.
With the extension of the visa-free policy for China nationals and enhanced air connectivity, these measures are expected to drive continued growth in visitor arrivals from China, it added.
'In fact, from January to April this year, Malaysia welcomed 1.4 million visitor arrivals from China, a robust 37.8% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
'It's also a 22.6% increase compared to the pre-pandemic level of 2019,' it said.
Chinese travellers have shown a strong preference for destinations that offer a blend of cultural richness, natural beauty, and modern conveniences, said Tourism Malaysia.
'Among the most popular locations are Kuala Lumpur, known for its iconic landmarks and shopping experiences, as well as Penang, famed for its heritage, street art, and unique local cuisine.
'Sabah, especially Kota Kinabalu, is also highly favoured for island-hopping and nature experiences,' it said.

Cautious market outlook for Hartalega
CIMB Research said near-term catalysts remains limited as tariff-related uncertainties and expansion of Chinese players' overseas capacity could further weigh on the industry. PETALING JAYA: The market remains cautious on the outlook for glovemaker Hartalega Holdings Bhd despite efforts on cost optimisation and the gradual recovery in demand as inventories from restocking diminishes. The company released its first quarter ended June 30, 2025 of financial year 2026 (FY26) results on Tuesday that were below market expectations due to lower demand and weaker average selling prices (ASPs). While the company told analysts at a briefing that it expects gradual recovery in FY26, observers have largely maintained a cautious stance due to oversupply from Chinese glovemakers leading to competitive ASPs and a looming RM101mil tax issue stemming from additional assessment for the years 2017 to 2022. CIMB Research, which maintained a 'hold' rating on the stock with a lower target price (TP) of RM1.45 from RM2.30, said near-term catalysts remains limited as tariff-related uncertainties and expansion of Chinese players' overseas capacity could further weigh on the industry. 'However, we see limited downside to the stock at current levels, with price-to-book value valuations now back to levels last seen during the glove supply glut in 2023, when industry-wide losses were prevalent,' it added. MBSB Research has kept its 'neutral' recommendation on the stock with a TP of RM1.24 from RM2.45. The research house pointed out to the thinning profit margins due to continued pricing pressure from Chinese glovemakers in the non-US markets. 'Note that the blended ASP contracted by 5% year-on-year. 'Given the pressure on both revenue and cost, we observed that the profit margin contracted to 2.4% from 6.8% a year ago,' it said, adding that the tough operating environment has translated to downward earnings revision of more than 50% for FY26 and FY27. Phillip Capital has also maintained a 'hold' rating with a TP of RM1.34 from RM1.64, reflecting lower ASP assumptions of US$19 to US$21 per 1,000 pieces from US$20 to US$22 as well as reduced sales volume in line with the company's latest guidance of six billion to six-and-a-half billion pieces. Maybank Investment Bank Research has maintained a 'sell' call with a TP of RM1.35 from RM1.41. The reserach house noted that that the company would continue to focus on its core nitrile glove segment and cost optimisation efforts, including workforce redeployment together with investing RM200mil to RM300mil over the next 18 to 24 months in automation and energy-saving upgrades. UOB Kay Hian Research expects the challenging outlook to continue pressuring sales and while the company expects US demand to recover, intensifying Chinese competition and oversupply dynamics continue to impact earnings. It has maintained a 'hold' call with a TP of RM1.40 from RM1.55.

China, Zimbabwe ink cooperation deal, food assistance package
HARARE, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Zimbabwe on Wednesday signed an agreement on economic and technical cooperation and exchange of letters for a new batch of food assistance to boost Zimbabwe's socio-economic development and food security. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the signing ceremony at the State House, where Zimbabwean Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube thanked China for its continued support to various economic sectors in Zimbabwe. He said that the previous economic and technical cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in 2020 has supported, among other projects, the drilling of boreholes across the country and the implementation of the Juncao technology assistance project that helps Zimbabwean farmers to cultivate hybrid grass rich in protein. "The government of Zimbabwe sincerely appreciates and acknowledges the emergency food assistance continuously received from China," Ncube said. "Indeed, China has demonstrated that they are our all-weather friend through the invaluable support they have consistently rendered to the people of Zimbabwe." For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding said the agreements were a testimony of the resilient ties between the two countries and the affirmation of China's unwavering solidarity with Zimbabwe. He said the economic and technical cooperation agreement, as well as the food assistance, were part of the 17 cooperation agreements signed between China and Zimbabwe during Mnangagwa's state visit to China last year. "Time and again, we have proven that we are bound by a shared future, standing side by side through every trial. We cherish this profound and enduring friendship, and will continue to stand together in the face of all challenges," Zhou said. The Chinese ambassador noted that the comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation between the two countries has flourished across all Zimbabwean sectors, bringing tangible benefits to both nations and setting a shining example for South-South cooperation. China remains firmly committed to supporting Zimbabwe in realizing its Vision 2030 and advancing its socio-economic transformation, Zhou added.
