Squash Action Hits Courts For Auckland Open
The Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Squash Open gets underway, tomorrow (Thursday 22 May) at the North Shore Squash Club with some intriguing matches in the opening rounds.
The men's PSA Challenger has first and second round matches on Friday followed by quarters and semis on Saturday and final Sunday while the women's Satellite runs Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
The men's draw involves players such as Northland left-hander Freddie Jameson who was a finalist at the New Zealand Junior Open this year but is up against another teen in Auckland's Vihan Chathury who will be playing for New Zealand at World Junior Championships in Egypt in July.
Gisborne-raised Willz Donnelly, Bay of Plenty's Glenn Templeton as well as Henderson's Apa Fatialofa and North Shore's Sion Wiggan against Korean seed Youngjo Ko are all on court in the first round.
If matches go to plan top seeded 18-year-old Ollie Dunbar will play seventh seed Gianluca Bushell-O'Connor from Australia in the quarters on Saturday,
Dunbar ranked 140 in the world would then have a likely semifinal against either fourth seed Camern Darton (Australia) or fifth seed Jooyung Na (Korea) on Saturday afternoon.
In the bottom half of the draw Shamil Wakeel from Sri Lanka who is seeded second will face the winner of the clash between Malaysian teenager Harith Daniel and Taupo's Bryce McMullen in the second round
The women's Satellite draw has Jena Gregory originally from the Hawkes Bay, as top seed and set to face Waikato's Sophie Hodges, the fourth seed in the semifinals if the draw works out.
Second seed, Bay of Plenty's Winona Jo-Joyce could come up against third seed Emma Merson (Bay of Plenty) or four-time former champion Lana Harrison for a place in the final.
The tournament runs Thursday 22 May – Sunday 25 May at the North Shore Squash Club with 170 entries across all divisions.

Southland go down in plodding encounter
When the highlight of a match is a hooker scoring three rolling-maul tries, the blood does not exactly get pumping. Yes, that is the sort of encounter which was delivered when Southland took on Northland in Whangārei last Friday night. Both sides were coming off first-up losses in the NPC — Northland losing to Taranaki and Southland going down to Otago — so there was plenty of desire to finish in front from both sides. Unfortunately the intent was not matched by execution as Northland won 22-17. There was too much kicking and not much attacking spark from either side. Southland winger Michael Manson had a golden chance to add to the Southland lead when he chased a kick through but could not control the ball and the opportunity went begging. Southland had already gone ahead early in the match when winger Scott Gregory, in his 15th game for the province, scored a try after the ball was charged down and he was first to get to it. Most of the first half was limited to play in the forwards and kicking the ball away. The game has always been one of territory and possession but many teams are trying to get one — territory — causing them to lose the other. Both sides kicked the ball downfield to get away from their own tryline but by doing so just handed the ball over. The away team went into halftime 7-0 up but only held the lead for a short time in the second period as Northland got its first try from James Mullan. Highlanders flanker Sean Withy then added another try for the Stags, punching through a gap to go over. But Mullan could not be stopped and his hat-trick of scores won the game for Northland. Southland kicked a penalty in the final act of the game to at least get a bonus point. Southland return home this week and will face Manawatu in another Friday night game.

The replacement hooker drove over in the 44th, 62nd and 69th minutes from lineout drives close to the Stags' tryline, making the visitors pay dearly for ill discipline that allowed the hosts such good field position. Earlier, Southland had lead 7-0 at halftime thanks to a try to former Northland wing Scott Gregory. The first period had seen a high degree of forward play and kicking, as both sides would've fancied their chances after opening week losses. Highlanders flanker Sean Withy answered back after Mullan had scored his first try, but from then on Northland's forwards and first five Rivez Reihana asserted their dominance on the game and set Mullan up for his crucial second and third tries. Reihana tacked on a penalty goal for insurance with a few minutes remaining, before Southland took what they could get and ended the game by booting one of their own to earn a losing bonus point. The Taniwha made sure their new All Black Simon Parker now heads off to Argentina as a winner, and now look forward to a visit from Tasman next Saturday.
