Wilyer Abreu homers twice as the Red Sox beat the Cubs 6-1 to avoid a sweep
CHICAGO (AP) — Wilyer Abreu homered twice and drove in three runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1 on Sunday to avoid a series sweep. Alex Bregman also connected as Boston rallied after managing just one run in its first two games after the All-Star break. Garrett Crochet (11-4) pitched six effective innings in his fourth consecutive win. The Red Sox went ahead to stay when Trevor Story opened the seventh with a walk and Abreu hit a drive to right-center off Ryan Pressly (2-3) for his 19th homer. Bregman broke it open with a pinch-hit shot off Drew Pomeranz for a three-run homer in the eighth. Abreu tacked on a two-out solo drive against Ethan Roberts. It was Abreu's fourth multihomer game of the season and No. 5 for his career. He hit a total of 17 homers in his first two years in the majors. Boston improved to 12-3 in July. It had won 10 in a row going into the series. Chicago wasted a sharp performance by Cade Horton, who pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-hit ball. The Cubs had won five of six. Crochet allowed eight hits in his first start since July 12. The All-Star left-hander struck out five and walked two. Chicago scored its only run in the second. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a leadoff double and Dansby Swanson followed with an infield single. After Crow-Armstrong was caught stealing third, Swanson raced home from second on Ian Happ's single to right. Key moment The Cubs threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with two down. But Crochet escaped the jam when he got Carson Kelly to bounce into a fielder's choice. Key stat The Red Sox improved to 13-14 against the Cubs since the start of interleague play in 1997. David Fry's three-run double clears way for Guardians win against A's
(Photo credit: Ken Blaze-Imagn Images) David Fry cleared the bases with a fourth-inning double during a career-best four-RBI day, Gavin Williams struck out 11 in seven innings and the Cleveland Guardians completed a series win over the visiting Athletics with an 8-2 triumph Sunday afternoon. Angel Martinez chipped in with a single, double and solo home run for the Guardians, who have won eight of nine bridging the All-Star break. Rookie Nick Kurtz doubled twice and drove in a run for the A's, who won just twice in the six-game season series against Cleveland. The Guardians jumped on A's starter Jeffrey Springs (8-7) for single runs in the first two innings, getting RBI hits from Fry in the first and Austin Hedges in the second, before busting the game open at 5-0 in the fourth. Fry's three-run double, a grounder over third base, scored Johnathan Rodriguez, who had opened the inning with a double, as well as Will Wilson and Brayan Rocchio, both of whom had singled to load the bases with two outs. Fry, who had just seven RBIs in his first 32 games this season, had never previously driven in more than three runs in a game in his career. Springs was pulled after four innings, charged with five runs on nine hits. He struck out four without issuing a walk. Martinez's homer, his ninth of the season, came in the seventh after the A's had scored in the fifth on a Williams wild pitch. Williams (6-4) limited the A's to one run and four hits in his seven innings. He walked just one amid his 11 strikeouts, which were one fewer than his career-high set in August of 2023 against Toronto. Rocchio had a sacrifice fly and Martinez a run-scoring single, giving him two RBIs, in the eighth to complete Cleveland's scoring. In the three-game set, the winning team scored eight runs on all three days. Wilson, who had two hits, joined Martinez with two runs apiece for the Guardians, who out-hit the visitors 12-7 in a game that featured eight doubles -- four by each team -- and Martinez's homer. Max Schuemann joined Kurtz with two hits for the A's, who had won consecutive series over Atlanta and Toronto going into the break.

And some of that has crossed the line even as the 27-year-old and the Lionesses have reached the semifinals at Euro 2025. 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,' Carter wrote in an emotional post on Instagram on Sunday. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think it's ok to target someone's appearance or race.' Carter, who has made 49 appearances for England and plays for Gotham FC, says she will be taking a step back from social media. 'As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can,' she added. 'Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,' FA CEO Mark Bullingham said. 'We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism. 'As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice.'
