Seta scandal: Nkabane claims Ramaphosa has yet to act against her, ahead of Parliament grilling
Higher Education and Training Minister Nobuhle Nkabane says President Cyril Ramaphosa has not taken any action against her, amid calls for her dismissal over the controversial appointments to the Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) boards.
Ramaphosa is facing pressure to act after Nkabane allegedly misled Parliament about the advisory panel involved in selecting Seta board chairpersons.
The controversy came to light when a leaked list revealed that several of the appointees had connections to the ANC, including Minerals Minister Gwede Mantashe's son Buyambo Mantashe, former KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, and former ANC KZN deputy chairperson Mike Mabuyakhulu.

While the appointments were later withdrawn, Nkabane was criticised in Parliament for initially withholding the names of the advisory panel members.
The situation worsened after Advocate Terry Motau and two senior officials from the Department of Higher Education denied any involvement in the panel.
The DA has since laid a criminal complaint against Nkabane and also reported her to both the Public Protector and Parliament's Ethics Committee.
According to the DA, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, is investigating her for fraud and for the statutory offence of lying to Parliament.
Nkabane dismisses claims of sanctions
On Thursday, Nkabane led a peaceful awareness campaign in Bhisho, Eastern Cape, alongside Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students, aimed at raising awareness about Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
Speaking to the media, she dismissed reports that Ramaphosa had taken measures against her, including claims that he blocked her recent trip to China with Deputy President Paul Mashatile – even though she was already at OR Tambo International Airport.
'Unfortunately, I only hear about these measures that have been taken against me on social media. There is nothing of that nature,' she said.

'I go to Luthuli House from time to time as a deployee of the ANC, and yesterday, I was in a Cabinet [meeting] with the president. There is no discussion of this nature.
'However, maybe it is still coming because some people can speculate and see things before they could happen.
'But at this point in time, I cannot comment because I don't know anything of that nature,' Nkabane continued.
Nkabane to be grilled over Seta board appointments
Nkabane is scheduled to appear before the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education on Friday.
She will be joined by her deputy ministers, the department's director-general, and members of the independent panel that advised on the appointments.
The committee plans to question them about the panel's processes and the rationale behind the controversial selections.
'We are somewhat pleased that this engagement will finally take place, allowing us to bring this matter to a close, as we have consistently maintained that accountability is non-negotiable when it comes to the use of public funds,' the committee's chairperson, Tebogo Letsie, said in a statement on Thursday.

Next Stay Close ✕ The bombshell revelation in the past 24 hours is that the names and applications for persons competing to serve on the SETA Boards were given directly to the Minister personally, in January 2025 (on her request) and not to the panel. This is contrary to Nkabane's claim to Parliament on 30 May that she didn't see the names until after "the panel" advised her. Nkabane only created the 'independent panel' in March 2025, which we deduce from the 'appointment letters' for 'panel members' that she submitted to Parliament. Nkabane had these applications for a full two months before she sent appointment letters to "the panel". Two letters have been supplied to Parliament which show her appointing two different people as 'independent panel' Chairpersons. One, Mabuza Ngubane as Chairperson on the 7th of March, and another, Adv Terry Motau as Chairperson on the 15th of March. Since then, both Motau & Ngubane have denied this, and Nkabane has admitted to Terry Motau that she indeed did not appoint him. These revelations are staggering: Nkabane & the ANC had the CVs and applications for two months before she started her 'independent panel' scheme, She attempted to appoint two different persons as 'Chairperson' - both of whom have testified to not having played any role in "the panel" and Now, at least four out of five persons on the 'independent panel' deny ever serving on the panel. With each passing day, Nkabane's ANC cadre deployment corruption scheme grows more and more brazen. The DA's demand to Luthuli House by way of a PAIA application for information on the Party's role in Nkabane's cadre deployment is yet to be answered. The DA will be holding Luthuli House to the legal timelines of this. The silence and inaction from President Ramaphosa show that an ANC party-wide cover-up may be underway, and the DA will not rest until full accountability follows. New Ward 98 councillor promises action and accountability
Following a decisive win in the recent municipal by-election, newly elected Ward 98 councillor Mickey van der Westhuizen of the DA has promised to restore hope, service delivery, and accountability to one of Tshwane's most diverse and complex communities. Ward 98 consists of Clarina, Heatherdale, Klerksoord, Tileba, Winternest, Theresapark, Eldorette and Dorandia. The ward has been plagued by issues such as water outages, crumbling infrastructure, illegal dumping, and dysfunctional streetlights. With the DA securing 72.77% of the vote, up from 37.5% in the 2024 National and Provincial Elections, the party sees this victory as a signal that residents are ready for effective leadership. 'This result shows that residents are tired of promises and are looking for delivery. 'We have heard their frustrations, and now it's time to roll up our sleeves,' said Van der Westhuizen. In outlining his immediate plans, he emphasised basic service delivery as a top priority. 'I have been active working for the community, with the community, and I have done the blue ribbon campaign, where I identified more than 3 000 non-functional streetlights that need to be fixed by the metro. 'The lessons that I have learned are that as someone representing the community, you must not disappoint them. If you disappoint your people, and if you do not listen and care for your community, you will be voted out,' he said. He said streetlights are currently a main concern for everyone, and that's his main priority. 'I want to prioritise community safety. It's important for me to engage with my community leaders.' The 30-year-old Van der Westhuizen, who grew up in the ward and matriculated at the Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz, said not everything is going to be fixed immediately, but residents must have trust in the process. 'It won't be immediately like we all will hope for, but I will advocate for better service delivery in all areas of Ward 98. 'Clarina, Dorandia and Tileba are some of the oldest communities in the north, and all have asbestos pipes. Now, asbestos pipes, as soon as they feel a bit too much pressure, burst. They need to be replaced, and I intend to put it in my integrated development plan because the problem now is that every two, three days, we have water leaks,' he said. Van der Westhuizen also mentioned that the safety of electrical infrastructure is another problem that needs an immediate solution. 'I believe that a community should work with the councillor and everyone should work as one team, for one vision and one goal in mind, for the betterment of all residents in the area.' Ward 98 was once considered contested ground, with ActionSA capturing 17% of the vote during the 2021 local government elections. However, ActionSA did not contest the recent by-election. This, according to DA Tshwane caucus leader Cilliers Brink, created space for the DA to reconnect with disillusioned voters. 'Many former ActionSA supporters in Ward 98 are now backing the DA. This is a ward that reflects the future of our country, diverse, vibrant, but facing serious challenges. 'Our goal is to prove that good governance and local delivery still matter,' said Brink. DA's constituency political head Bronwynn Engelbrecht said it's important for Van der Westhuizen to be patient, as it's not easy to be a ward councillor. 'We needed somebody who's got a passion for the people, a passion for working hard because it's a hard job. You can't always be at home on your cellphone you must be there and meet your people.
