A Karns High School social studies teacher has been suspended with pay over posts he made on his personal social media page. The posts mocked DEI programs, trans people and Palestinians; praised Jan. 6 insurrectionists; and included sexist remarks about former Vice President Kamala Harris.
A collection of screenshots of his comments and reposts were shared widely in the community.
On Feb. 5, the teacher was suspended with pay in accordance with district policy, Knox County Schools spokeswoman Carly Harrington said, pending an investigation.
The teacher has been licensed to teach in Tennessee since 2013 and has taught in Nashville. Knox News is not naming him as the investigation plays out.
What is the district's policy on social media for teachers?
KCS policy leaves personal social media use to the discretion of employees and prohibits using social media to communicate with students.
Employees cannot post or disclose any identifiable student information or confidential information on social media sites.
The policy does not dictate what employees may post on political issues.

US House speaker Johnson will travel to Israel June 22

(Reuters) -U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson will travel to Israel to address the parliament on June 22, he said on Wednesday. "Our ties run deeper than military partnerships and trade agreements," Johnson said in an emailed statement. Punchbowl News, which first reported Johnson's plan, said the House Speaker was expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem during the trip. Johnson did not provide further details on the planned trip. Johnson announced the visit as Israel presses on with its military campaign in the Gaza Strip, more than 20 months after it launched its offensive there in response to a deadly incursion into Israel led by Palestinian militant group Hamas. On Tuesday, Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Norway imposed sanctions on far-right Israeli cabinet ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, accusing them of repeatedly inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Israel called the action "outrageous" and said the Israeli government would hold a meeting early next week to decide how to respond.

Israel says 108 truckloads of humanitarian aid entered Gaza

More than 100 truckloads of humanitarian aid, including flour and other food, have crossed into the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom crossing in the south, Israel's COGAT agency reported on Wednesday. The 108 trucks belonging to the UN and the international community had crossed over on Tuesday, the Israeli authority for Palestinian affairs said. The Israeli military would "continue to facilitate humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip while making every effort to ensure that the aid does not reach the hands of the Hamas terrorist organization," COGAT said. Last month, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US organization backed by the governments of Israel and the United States, began delivering aid to Gaza, bypassing the UN and other international organizations. Israel has accused UN bodies of allowing Hamas to seize aid intended for the population. The GHF's distribution has been controversial. Palestinians attempting to collect food and other aid have been killed by gunfire at the distribution points. The non-profit organization says that it has so far distributed around 12 million meals in Gaza. Israeli authorities say that 350 aid transports have entered the coastal region over the past week. According to the UN, at least 500 to 600 truckloads are needed daily.

Snarky fashion influencer who regularly mocks Trump, Vance's outfits admits he's in US illegally, DHS responds

A snarky fashion influencer who regularly mocks President Trump's outfits has posted a now-viral confessional about being in the US illegally — with the Department of Homeland Security signaling it is aware and zeroing in on the critic. Derek Guy disclosed his 'lack of legal immigration' in an X post seen nearly 5 million times as he criticized the Trump administration's deportation crackdown. The fashion enthusiast, who boasts millions of followers on Instagram and X, admitted he came to the US as a baby — via Canada — after his parents fled Vietnam following the Tet Offensive. 5 Trump and Vance walk to welcome Ohio State University NCAA champs. REUTERS 5 Derek Green, a prominent critic on X, reveals he's in the US illegally. 'I'm still unsure whether we technically broke an immigration law. The border between Canada and the United States was pretty porous (as it is today, for the most part). But either way, since I came here without legal documentation, I eventually fell into the category of being an undocumented immigrant,' he wrote. 5 Derek Guy posts a lengthy tweet about his citizenship. 'The lack of legal immigration has totally shaped my life. It has made every interaction with the law much scarier. It has shaped which opportunities I could or could not get. It has taken an emotional toll, as this legal issue hangs over your head like a black cloud.' His lengthy post quickly attracted DHS' attention — with the department responding by posting a cryptic 'Spy Kids' GIF of a pair of covert glasses zooming in. 5 The Department of Homeland Security responded with a cryptic post this week after fashion critic Derek Guy admitted he's in the US illegally. That post has been seen 20 million times by Wednesday morning. Vice President JD Vance — another regular target of the fashion influencer — also chimed in after scores of people started suggesting he should take revenge and deport him. 5 JD Vance responds to Derek Guy admitting he's in the US illegally. Vance fired back with a meme of actor Jack Nicholson grinning and shaking his head — a move many interpreted as a sign the veep wanted to boot him from the country. Guy claimed to be unconcerned, however — replying with a pic of Vance in a tight suit while writing: 'I think i can outrun you in these clothes.'
