For home buyer Chris Isaak, who loves to entertain, a floor plan that worked for his family dynamic — his younger sister lives with him as does his beloved fur baby, Ruby — and for his active social life — he enjoys cooking for friends and family — was top-of-mind. He also wanted to live in a connected, active, walkable and very social community. He found everything that he was looking for at Park Place in Mahogany, a collection of 100 townhomes designed and built by the multi-award-winning team at Jayman Built.

'I really have everything that I could possibly want in a standalone single-family home in my new townhome,' says Isaak. 'Plus, the community of Mahogany is second to none. It has downtown vibrancy when you want it, but in the evenings it's quiet and calm and serene.'

Isaak purchased the Malbec townhome model, one of 10 floor plans offered at Park Place. The three-storey 1,717-square-foot townhome backs directly onto Central Green, a 13-acre park and features a double-car garage with a lower flex room, a separate dining room space on the main level and on the upper floor, a large primary bedroom with a five-piece ensuite and two secondary bedrooms.

The Park Place collection of townhomes features models named after wine varietals with floor plans ranging from 1,380 to 1,742 sq. ft. with attached double, tandem or single-car garages. Spurred on by a medical diagnosis (Isaak was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two years ago), the former paramedic now turned financial executive, began looking for his first home 18 months ago, and toured close to 14 show homes, all in the southeast quadrant.

'I was renting a condo on the sixth floor in Britannia and the diagnosis really put a lot of things in perspective. I really wanted to start securing my future, and I was essentially lighting my money on fire every month with the rental. I wanted to own property,' he says.

He knew that he wanted to purchase a townhome, either in the community of Mahogany or close by.

'Even before I was thinking of buying property, my coworkers and I would hang out at Chairman's Steakhouse or Diner Deluxe. The energy in Mahogany is phenomenal. We'd ride our motorbikes out here to watch the game. It's really becoming a secondary downtown.'

The walkability and the lake were also huge draws for Isaak, who is very active and loves to paddleboard.

As for builders, he only looked at Jayman Built homes.

'They do a really good job of what they do and I was really impressed by the work that they do with the MS Society,' says Isaak. Jayman Built has partnered with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada to support MS research and programs. They are the title sponsor of the Jayman Built MS Walk, a fundraising event that raises more than $2.3 million annually.

When Isaak set eyes on the Malbec show home, he knew it was for him.

'I basically copied and pasted all of the finishes from the show home into my new home and added a few tweaks to make it my own,' he says. He added a dry bar with a beverage centre on the main floor adjacent to the kitchen, increased the size of the kitchen island by 16 inches and added pops of drama with black pendant lighting and a black sink.

'My favourite room is the kitchen. We've already has lots of people over,' he says.

Isaak also changed up the upstairs floor plan converting the primary and two secondary bedroom configuration to two primary bedrooms, both with a five-piece ensuite.

'I don't have the lights on ever. The south side of the house faces the park, so no obstructions. I was nervous about the light because this is a middle townhome, but it is so bright. On the north side of the home, the sun cuts through,' he says.

His dog, Ruby, loves all of the green space. Isaak's home backs onto Central Park, a 13-acre park with tennis courts, pickleball community gardens and an amphitheatre. Mahogany Lake is a three-minute walk from the doorstep.

'Now, I can just open my door and go for a walk around the lake with her. She's already made friends and the dog park is close, too — a five-minute walk away.'

Now I don't have to worry about the hour drive and the cost of gas — I can carry my paddleboard half a block to the lake and launch and go for a lap around the lake in the morning before I head off to work. I don't plan on any vacations this summer. This is my vacation,' he says with a laugh.

New Calgary community Nostalgia Townlet to resemble a 'European village'

Men and women wearing fancy suits boarded a limousine bearing the Mercedes-Benz's three-pointed star on Wednesday and rode through a dirt road on the southeastern tip of Calgary, bordered by plains stretching into the horizon. Article content After getting out of the vehicle, they walked along the porch of a white, two-storey structure overlooking the meandering Bow River and into a tent that had been set up to mark the birth of a new community in Calgary called the Nostalgia Townlet. Article content Article content The project, the brainchild of homebuilding company Jayman Built, is south of Seton and Rangeview and, over time, will feature more than 5,600 homes built in the image of a 'European village.' Article content Article content The area, billed as a luxury community in a statement by the company, will house a variety of boutique shops, cafes, restaurants and a specialty grocery store, anchored by a 155-foot clock tower and a 1.5-mile ridge line facing the Bow River. Article content The place will also be complete with a lower river bench boutique hotel and a conference centre, both of which would be steps away from each other. Article content The main highlight, however, would be a 400,000-square-foot private social and athletic club, boasting close to a dozen tennis courts, a 25,000-square-foot gym, swimming pools with a tube and a channel, an NHL-size hockey rink, golf simulators and a host of other amenities.
