BREAKING NEWS Simone Biles sparks fan fury with pointed gender comment in 2025 ESPYs speech after Riley Gaines trans feud

Daily Mail3 days ago
Simone Biles took home the first ESPY award of the night on Wednesday but fans were left furious with the Olympic legend's acceptance speech.
The gymnast, 28, who had put on a loved-up display with NFL husband Jonathan Owens on the red carpet earlier in the evening, won the award for Best Championship Performance as the biggest names in sport gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The seven-time gold medalist opened her speech by offering prayers to those who lost their lives in the tragic fatal floods in Texas earlier this month.
However, it was one particular eyebrow-raising comment that left fans fuming on social media.
'That was very unexpected, especially in a category of all men. So thank you guys so much,' she began.
'Before I get into it, I first want to talk and offer my condolences and prayers to all those impacted by the devastating flash flooding on July 4th in central Texas. Words can't replace the pain, but our hearts are with you during this tragic time.
'I'm honored to receive this award. The recognition means more than you guys know. I would like to thank the people who have stood with me on this journey, my teammates, my competitors, my coaches, family and fans who have lifted me up every step of the way.
'I wouldn't be standing here without all of you. I also proudly share this award with my team of supporters, having a strong support system who are willing to show up for you, not just when you are winning, but when you are struggling, too, is really important.'
She continued to thank her support network before dropping the controversial concluding comment. 'I believe in the power of sport, the power of us, and, of course, the power of she,' Biles added.
Her reference to the power of she, as well as her taking the time to highlight the fact she beat out a number of male athletes for the award, stirred controversy online after it came just weeks after she found herself embroiled in a bitter spat with Riley Gaines over transgender athletes.
'@Simone_Biles wins the first award, and still the only thing she can talk about is gender lmaooo #ESPYS2025,' one user wrote.
A second added: ;Simone Biles says she believes in the power of she but totally cool with dudes playing against women and taking opportunities from them #ESPYS2025'
'Hahah Simone biles wins for best championship moment? This is the girl that wants trans women to participate in women's sports, got it,' another chimed in.

BREAKING NEWS Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl winner Richie James retires from the NFL at 29

Richie James, a former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver who won the Super Bowl alongside Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes in 2024, has retired. James has been a free agent since that victory in Las Vegas and posted on X late on Friday night that, due to a knee injury, he will never be returning to football. The 29-year-old wrote: 'It took time but i have come to realize i am Retired from the NFL. 7th round out of MTSU. I feel like i was just a ball player to last that long. 'Unfortunately my knee never healed properly. I was playing hurt since 22'. Oh well. I gave everything I got to the game of Football.' As he mentioned in his statement, James was picked in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers after playing college for Middle Tennessee. He was waived in 2021 due to knee surgery after 40 games and 38 receptions for 689 yards and three touchdowns. In 2022, he signed with the New York Giants and recorded 57 receptions for 569 yards, helping the Giants reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016 - they haven't made the postseason since, either. The following year, he was signed to the Chiefs by Andy Reid and played six snaps as Kansas City beat his former team, the 49ers, to record Super Bowl glory.

Gwyneth Paltrow was 'sad' when ex Brad Pitt married Jennifer Aniston, bombshell book reveals

Gwyneth Paltrow put her Oscar winning acting skills to good use when her ex-fiancé married another woman. A new biography about the Shakespeare in Love star, which also examines her relationship with Ben Affleck, claims Paltrow, 52, was mournful when Brad Pitt, 61, tied the knot with Jennifer Aniston in July 2000, but tried to keep it to herself, according to an excerpt published in US Weekly. In Gwyneth: A Biography, author Amy Odell claims that Paltrow got snappy with a reporter at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of that year when asked about her love life while promoting Duets, the film she starred in, directed by her father, the late Bruce Paltrow. 'The reporter then asked how she felt about Brad Pitt marrying Jennifer Aniston [in July of that year]. "Are you really asking me this question?" Gwyneth replied, her eyes now "daggers." "I can't comment on this kind of thing." In reality, Gwyneth confided to friends that she'd felt sad when she learned they were getting married. (She was also fond of telling them that Brad "has terrible taste in women.")' According to an excerpt shared with People, Paltrow and Pitt met when she auditioned for a role in Legends of the Fall. She didn't get that part, but Pitt reportedly suggested she play his wife in the horror classic Se7en, which began production in 1994. Paltrow had also been offered a role in the Keanu Reeves project, Feeling Minnesota, and when deciding which role to take a friend reportedly asked, 'Well, who do you want to date, Brad Pitt or Keanu Reeves?' According to Odell, 'The two would walk around the set holding hands, and smoked cigarettes together outside their trailers, Gwyneth holding hers like a thirties movie star.' Daily Mail has reached out to Paltrow's representatives for a statement regarding the allegations in the book. The two got engaged in 1996, but there were doubts. After Paltrow received rave reviews for her work in 1996's Emma, she allegedly confided in her friend, makeup artist Kevin Aucoin, that Pitt 'wanted to be with her but seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received.' '[Aucoin's] advice to Gwyneth was frank, "You really need to end this,"' Odell wrote. Pitt and Paltrow called it quits in 1997. When Pitt and Aniston split in 2005, following his affair with future ex-wife Angelina Jolie, Paltrow, who had been signed as the face of Estee Lauder's Pleasures fragrance, couldn't help but make a snide remark at a dinner with executive Aerin Lauder. According to the US Weekly excerpt, 'At one dinner, the two were talking about Brad Pitt. According to someone familiar with the discussion, Gwyneth allegedly told her, "He's dumber than a sack of s–t."' This seemed to refer to their very different backgrounds. Paltrow and Pitt fell in love while working on the 1997 horror film Se7en. ''The two would walk around the set holding hands, and smoked cigarettes together outside their trailers,' according to the book; Pictured in Burbank, CA in October 1995 Gwyneth: A Biography will be released on July 29. Daily Mail has reached out to Paltrow's representatives to for a statement regarding the allegations in the book; Pictured in Beverly Hills in April 2023 Pitt grew up in a very religious family in Springfield, MO, whereas Paltrow was brought up in Manhattan and went to an elite private school. In a 2023 interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, looking back at her breakup with Pitt, Paltrow said she was 'totally heartbroken' after the split but 'It was the right thing at that time, but it was really hard.' 'There were a number of things that had happened, he was nine years older than me — he knew what he wanted, he was ready to do it and I was kind of all over the place.' Gwyneth: A Biography will be released on July 29.

WNBA All-Star Basketball Without Borders camp is opportunity for international players to be seen

Georgia Amoore went to an international basketball camp at the 2019 Final Four and was seen for the first time by Virginia Tech coaches. That led to a scholarship at the school where the Australian guard eventually led the Hokies their first Final Four in 2023. Now the Washington Mystics rookie is an instructor at a Basketball Without Borders camp, which is in its third year, that's connected to the WNBA All-Star Game this weekend. 'It's a full circle moment,' Amoore, who was the No. 6 pick by the Mystics in April, told The Associated Press on Saturday. 'It was my first time exposure, my first time getting a real scholarship offer. Now it's amazing because I can help and talk to all these girls from so many countries." More than 25 different countries and territories were represented at the camp with players coming from as far as Japan and Australia. There were dozens of college coaches ranging from Power 4 schools to mid-majors in attendance, as well as WNBA general managers. Last year's camp in Phoenix yielded more than 30 college scholarships for the players, including Bianca Quiñonez, a 6-foot-2 forward from Milagro, Ecuador, who will be headed to defending champion UConn this fall. 'If you look at the history of Basketball Without Borders, as it pertains to girls, especially, there are players who consistently go to college, consistently get drafted so that in and of itself is proof that this is important and meaningful," said camp director Allison Feaster, who is also the Boston Celtics' vice president of team operations and organizational growth. Amoore remembers that in her international camp, her current Mystics teammate Aaliyah Edwards of Canada and Seattle Storm guard Nika Muhl of Croatia participated as well. The trio became friends at the camp and Muhl stopped by Saturday afternoon. She and Amoore are both going through ACL rehabs right now. Amoore said that while there are language barriers with so many different countries represented, the teams are able to communicate through the sport. 'A lot of demonstrating a lot of kind of like sign language,' she said. 'A lot of these girls are so impressive because even if they don't speak good English, they speak well enough to be able to, you know, translate or get them anywhere.' Feaster said she has seen how these camps can change players' lives. 'When open doors you get a chance to see their levels to all of this,' she said. 'It plants the seed for them to want to continue and succeed.' All of the camp's players will attend the All-Star Game on Saturday night. ___
