LSG announce Bharat Arun as bowling coach

Indian Express30-07-2025
The Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday announced Bharat Arun as their new bowling coach. Arun, who has earned plaudits for his work with the Indian team as a bowling coach in the staff led by Ravi Shastri from 2017 to 2021, joins LSG after a succesfull stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders.
'It's an honour to join the Lucknow Super Giants, a franchise that reflects professionalism, ambition, and vision at every level,' the 62-year-old said in a statement on the franchise's official website.
'My conversations with Dr. Sanjiv Goenka and the management were incredibly energizing – there is a clear intent to invest in young Indian talent and build a long-term legacy.
'What excites me most is the vision for long-term development. LSG has invested in a young, talented, and dynamic group of Indian fast bowlers – Akash deep, Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Akash Singh – and I see immense potential in each of them. My mission is to help shape them into a cohesive, fearless, and tactically sharp pace unit that can challenge the best batting line-ups in the world.'

Arun had been with KKR in the same role for four years. He was part of the coaching staff that powered the team to their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title in more than a decade in 2024. However, this was followed by a disappointing eighth-placed finish last season, in which their decision to let go of Shreyas Iyer came under sharp criticism. KKR are rejigging their coaching staff with Abhishek Nayar and Dwayne Bravo all set to call the shots. Hence Chandrakant Pandit and Arun, the two veterans, left the team.
LSG are yet to announce if they will retain former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan and former Australia opener Justin Langer as mentor and head coach respectively. Both their contracts are set to end before the start of the 2026 season.

I obviously said sorry for the broken foot: Woakes reveals exchange with Pant

London: England all-rounder Chris Woakes has revealed that he said "sorry" to Rishabh Pant for the delivery that broke his toe during the recent Test series at the end of which he was left quite touched by his Indian rival's generosity. Woakes had struck Pant's foot during the fourth Test in Manchester, ruling him out of the series-deciding fifth game. India battled past the setback to win the finale at the Oval by six runs to tie the series at 2-2. Both Woakes and Pant became symbols of heroism for their respective teams by coming out to bat despite major injuries. While Pant padded up with his broken toe in Manchester, Woakes came out during the fifth Test despite a dislocated shoulder. "I saw Rishabh (Pant) had put an image of me on Instagram with a salute emoji, so I replied thanking him: 'Appreciate the love and hope the foot is OK,' etc," Woakes recalled in an interview to 'The Guardian'. "He then sent me a voice note saying: 'I hope all is OK, good luck with the recovery and I hope we meet again out there some day'. I obviously said sorry for the broken foot." Woakes also recalled being appreciated by India captain Shubman Gill for coming out to bat in the fifth Test. Woakes did not get to face a ball but said running between the wickets was tough. "(India captain) Shubman (Gill) said something like: 'That was incredibly brave'," he said. "I told him: 'You've had an unbelievable series, well played, and credit to your team'. Both sets of players had been through the mill in the series and deserve credit for the show we put on. Both teams wanted the win, of course, but it does kind of feel fair that it was drawn."

Gary Kirsten can't keep calm, showers ex-student Gautam Gambhir with plaudits after India's win vs England in 5th Test

Former India head coach Gary Kirsten expressed his admiration for Gautam Gambhir's leadership following India's thrilling 2-2 series draw in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. Gary Kirsten(PTI) Speaking to reporters after India's dramatic six-run win in the final Test at The Oval, Kirsten said he was "really pleased" with what Gambhir, his ex-student, and his team achieved under pressure. "I'm very excited that India won the series; I mean, levelled the series," said Kirsten, who guided India to their 2011 World Cup triumph with Gambhir as a key member of that squad. "It's great for Indian cricket, and I'm really pleased for Gautam Gambhir as well. He's well known, and I've worked with him a lot. I'm just pleased for what he's achieved with the team." The decider at The Oval went down to the wire on the final day. With England needing just 35 runs and India four wickets away from a series draw, fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna delivered under immense pressure. Siraj, who took five wickets in the innings, bowled Gus Atkinson with a searing yorker to seal the victory. The celebrations that followed were emotional and exuberant. Gambhir hugged his staff and players, including assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and bowling coach Morne Morkel, who lifted the Indian coach off his feet in a jubilant moment captured on the broadcast. The team then took a victory lap around The Oval, saluting Indian fans in the stands. Kirsten, now involved in youth development initiatives in South Africa, noted India's growing strength in developing talent and praised the country's sporting and educational culture. "I think India has a strong sports culture as well. Every country does it one way or another," Kirsten said. "My love for India is to see the development of young people in the holistic development of them. We know that education is really strong in India, and that's something that, as South Africans, we can learn from." Gambhir, who took charge as India's head coach last year, faced a challenging start to his tenure with tough series losses against New Zealand and Australia. But the spirited comeback in England, especially after going down 0-1 and later 1-2 in the series, has earned him both respect and breathing room in the role.
