OTTAWA — Parliament gets back to work Wednesday with a new Speaker, a new prime minister and plenty of new faces in the House of Commons.
Speaker Francis Scarpaleggia will preside over the House of Commons for the first time today, while his office has confirmed that all 343 members of Parliament have now been sworn in.
Roughly a third of those MPs, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, were elected for the first time in April and will face their first question period today.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will be absent from the House of Commons for the first time in two decades after failing to win re-election in his riding.
Former party leader Andrew Scheer will lead the Conservative caucus in the House of Commons.
King Charles formally opened Parliament on Tuesday with the speech from the throne and the minority Liberal government says it will move quickly to pass a promised one-point cut to the bottom income tax bracket.

Ottawa taps Cohere to work on use of AI in public service

OTTAWA – The federal government has signed an agreement with a Canadian artificial intelligence company to identify areas where AI can enhance public service operations. The government says the agreement also involves looking at building Canada's commercial capabilities to use and export AI. The government release provided few details about what exactly Cohere will do. However using artificial intelligence to increase efficiency in the public service was one of Prime Minister Mark Carney's election promises. In a blog post Cohere says it signed the memorandum of understanding with the government to transform the public sector with its AI technology. A spokesperson for Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon says the deal did not include a 'financial component.' This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 19, 2025.

‘It lit up the whole street!': Blaze damages two Sarnia homes

Two homes were damaged after fire broke out on Griffith Road in Sarnia on Aug. 18, 2025. (Sean Irvine/CTV News London) A fire in Sarnia has damaged two homes and left a family shaken. The fire began at a split-level residence on Griffith Road around 11 p.m. Monday. Payton West, who lives next door, said she and her mother were alerted by a 'bang' and the smell of smoke. 'At first, we thought it was our house, and I started freaking out. Then my mom came outside and saw my neighbour's house was on fire,' said West. When she went to look for herself, she immediately felt intense heat from the blaze. 'The fire was huge! It was the whole right side of the house. Like, it lit up the whole street!' Firefighters arrived within minutes and at the time, there was initial word that a family could be inside. SARNIA FIRE - GRIFFITH ROAD - AUG 2025 Two homes were damaged after fire broke out on Griffith Road in Sarnia on Aug. 18, 2025. (Sean Irvine/CTV News London) 'Fortunately, all three residents had gotten out of the house already, and we proceeded to fight the fire and do search and rescue,' said Mike Otis with Sarnia fire. The family managed to escape from the back of the house and were quickly guided to safety by first responders. Meanwhile, the fire spread next door. Initially, three stations, consisting of nearly 20 firefighters were called to the scene. But as the second house caught fire, a fourth station was called in to help. The blaze was under control within half an hour and damage is extensive. Fire investigators spent several hours at the scene searching for a cause. Meanwhile, as a general reminder to all homeowners, Otis is stressing the importance of smoke alarms. 'Over two thirds of people who die in fires, it is because they didn't have working smoke alarms,' he said. Thankfully in Monday's fire, that wasn't the case. 'Absolutely, yeah. I'm just glad everyone is out and safe,' said West.
