KUALA LUMPUR: The 2025 World Women Economic and Business Summit (WWEBS) convened over 200 distinguished participants including policymakers, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders and changemakers from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond at the Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
Held under the theme 'Transforming Tomorrow: Women Leading in a Digital, Sustainable and Inclusive Future,' the summit celebrated women's leadership in driving inclusive, sustainable and digitally empowered progress.
Now in its fourth edition since its launch in 2022, WWEBS has firmly established itself as the premier platform in the region dedicated to advancing women's roles in economic and business leadership.
The 2025 summit featured a dynamic mix of plenary discussions, interactive workshops, a fireside chat with women ambassadors and leaders and a special awards ceremony honouring outstanding women in business.
The summit opened with welcoming remarks from WWEBS organising committee chair Datuk Halimah Mohd Said, followed by virtual addresses from United Nations under-secretary-general and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) executive secretary Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana and Thailand Foreign Affairs Vice Minister Dr Lalivan Karnchanachari. Both underscored the critical role of women in steering sustainable development and inclusive innovation.
A series of high-impact plenary sessions examined women's influence in some of the most pressing global domains. These included:
• AI and Digital Leadership, featuring voices such as Dr H.C. Cristina Amor Maclang and Oranuch Lerdsuwankij, which explored how women are shaping the future of technology and responsible digital governance.
• Climate Action and the Green Economy, spotlighting the leadership of women in ESG, green business models and renewable energy.
• Global Health Security and Crisis Leadership, where speakers like Datuk Zunaidah Idris and Dr Revati Phalkey discussed women's critical roles in responding to global disruptions while maintaining economic resilience.
In addition, an interactive session titled 'The Power of Arts in Business', led by Brian Cracknell, encouraged participants to think boldly and creatively about women's leadership across sectors.
The afternoon Fireside Chat brought together Nineta Barbulescu, Dr Mariyam Shabeena Ahmed and Chong Chye Neo, offering powerful reflections on diplomacy, business innovation and inclusive policy-making. Moderated by Josephine Romero, the session highlighted the importance of international collaboration and gender-responsive economic ecosystems.
A key highlight of the summit was the presentation of the Women Excellence Awards, recognising trailblazing women who have made outstanding contributions to business, entrepreneurship and community development.
During the keynote session, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri delivered an inspiring address titled 'Transforming Tomorrow: The Power of Women's Leadership', reaffirming the government's commitment to advancing gender parity in leadership and entrepreneurship.
Earlier, Education Ministry deputy director-general (policy and curriculum sector) Dr Rusmini Ku Ahmad, representing the Education Minister, delivered a special luncheon address highlighting the importance of educational pathways for women's economic empowerment.
The second address was delivered by PKR deputy president and former special advisor to the Finance Minister Nurul Izzah Anwar, who shared valuable insights on empowering women in the national development agenda.
'This summit is not just a gathering. It is a movement. A movement to amplify women's voices, celebrate their leadership and reimagine a world where innovation, sustainability and inclusivity are driven by the vision of women leaders.
'We must invest more in education, mentorship and opportunities for women across all sectors to ensure that the future we build is fairer, greener and digitally empowered.' said KSI president Tan Sri Michael Yeoh.

Sabah Blue Economy on track to yield RM3.25bil annually from marine harvests

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Blue Economy is estimated to yield 491,000 tonnes of marine harvests such as fish and prawns annually, with a value of RM3.25 billion, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said marine harvesting is one of 14 components of the Blue Economy that can be explored, such as renewable ocean energy, blue carbon, tourism, maritime transport, and marine biotechnology, among others. "There is more to Blue Economy than just deep-sea harvesting," he said in a speech read by Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun at the International Business Review (IBR) ASEAN Awards here yesterday. Also present was IBR Asia Group founder, director and chief executive officer Datuk Beatrice Nirmala. The chief minister also said that one of the most exciting aspects of ocean energy is the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), which harnesses energy from the oceans. "OTEC power plants are currently being planned to span across 500km of coastline and, in time, to be able to generate 20,000MW of green energy, an unprecedented scale globally. This is not only a gamechanger for the country, it is a gamechanger for the region," he said. Hajiji said the Blue Economy Industrial Park has been established in Kudat as part of three new industrial parks approved by the state government, along with Kota Belud and Beaufort, all strategically located to grow investment opportunities. On the investment front, Hajiji said Sabah had recorded RM17.41 billion from 73 companies in overall approved foreign and domestic investments in the manufacturing sector since September 2020, with 52 companies already setting up businesses in the state with a total investment of RM7.8 billion, creating 3,636 jobs. Between 2022 and 2024, Sabah received new investment proposals worth an additional RM42.3 billion, which will create 32,996 jobs, he added. The chief minister highlighted that Sabah had sealed the Commercial Collaborative Agreement with Petronas, allowing the state to have more participation in the oil and gas industry. This includes 50 per cent equity from the Samarang oil and gas field, 25 per cent equity from Samur, and a 25 per cent equity in the US$3.1 billion (US$1=RM4.24) floating liquefied natural gas (ZLNG) investment in Sipitang. To support the growing investments, the state government has launched the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040. This initiative aims to generate 700MW within the next 1 to 2 years. Additionally, the government has allocated RM679.85 million in 2024 to address immediate water shortages. Long-term plans also include the completion of the Ulu Padas hydropower. Meanwhile, nine winners were announced at the event, namely Institut Jantung Negara for corporate excellence in the healthcare sector, Clean Kinetics Pte Ltd for corporate excellence in the renewable energy sector, Millenium Minerals Ltd for corporate excellence in the mining industry, Sabah Port Sdn Bhd for corporate excellence in the logistics sector, AiRTS Pte Ltd for innovative technology in the artificial intelligence sector, Alpine Integrated Solution Sdn Bhd for corporate excellence in the event management sector, and Education Malaysia Global Services for corporate excellence in the education sector. Negeri Sembilan was named Most Progressive State in Malaysia in 2024, while Sabah was recognised as the Most Outstanding State in Malaysia for 2024.

China says exports reflect demand, not bid for world market dominance

BEIJING, July 20 — China is not seeking to dominate global markets, Vice Finance Minister Liao Min said on Friday while defending the country's trade practices during a G-20 gathering near Durban, South Africa. He said most of China's production serves domestic demand, with exports only responding to overseas needs and not part of a wider strategy to flood foreign markets, Bloomberg reported. Liao said China's recent economic performance, including 5.3 per cent growth in the first half of the year, contributes stability at a time when global markets face uncertainty. 'China's certainty and stability are the greatest contributions it makes to the world today,' Liao said, stressing the country's shift toward a consumption-led economy. He noted that 86.4 per cent of China's growth came from domestic demand and that consumption alone drove an average of 56.2 per cent of GDP gains over the past four years. The government is continuing to promote consumption through measures such as 300 billion yuan in special sovereign bonds aimed at boosting sales of electronics, home appliances and cars. China recorded a goods-trade surplus of about US$586 billion (RM2.5 trillion) in the first half of 2025, partly due to exporters accelerating shipments amid fears of new US tariffs. While this export momentum may slow later in the year, economists believe China could still post a record annual surplus exceeding US$1 trillion. Liao argued that China's current-account surplus stood at 2.2 per cent last year, a figure he called globally reasonable and not indicative of excessive trade dominance. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has accused China of extreme trade imbalances and suggested the country is trying to export its way out of a property crisis. Liao rejected overcapacity claims as oversimplified, saying large market share in some sectors does not prove China is distorting global trade. He also voiced strong support for multilateralism and praised the G-20 finance ministers' joint communique, calling it a sign of continued global cooperation despite trade tensions.
