'Divisive agenda' of BJP in Assam 'crossed all limits,' people will 'fight back': Mamata Banerjee
Banerjee also asserted that the "divisive agenda" of the BJP in Assam has "crossed all limits."
The TMC supremo has been accusing the Centre and the BJP-ruled states of systematically targeting Bengali-speaking migrants by branding them as "illegal Bangladeshi" or "Rohingya."
"The second most spoken language in the country, Bangla, is also the second most spoken language of Assam. To threaten citizens, who want to coexist peacefully respecting all languages and religions, with persecution for upholding their own mother tongue is discriminatory and unconstitutional. This divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back," she said in a post on X.

Today in Politics: Govt calls all-party meeting ahead of Monsoon Session of Parliament
Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, set to run from July 21 to August 21, the government has called for an all-party meeting on Sunday. The all-party meeting comes a day after the Opposition INDIA bloc held a virtual meeting on Saturday to discuss its strategy for the Monsoon Session and the issues it intends to raise to corner the government. Notably, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was absent from the meeting after it declared it was only part of the INDIA bloc for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After the Saturday meeting, the INDIA bloc said there was a consensus among the allies on eight major issues to be raised in Parliament. While the BJP-led NDA government seems to be keen to make the Monsoon Session heavy with its legislative agenda, the Opposition is set to corner the government over multiple issues, ranging from the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor to US President Donald Trump's claim of brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire, to the Election Commission (EC)'s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, as reported by Liz Mathew. 'The government has a heavy legislative agenda, but the session will be dominated by the SIR exercise in Bihar, Operation Sindoor and Ahmedabad air crash probe,' admitted a source from the Treasury benches. Parliament is also expected to take up the issue of impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma, from whose Delhi residence stacks of currency notes were allegedly recovered. An inquiry committee will be set up by the presiding officer of the House concerned to probe charges against Justice Varma, whose timeline for submitting its report will be crunched from three months, sources said. The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is set to hold a protest on Sunday in Villupuram district against the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government over its 'failure' to implement a 10.5% reservation for Vanniyars within the reservation for Most Backward Communities (MBCs). However, the protest comes at a tumultuous time for the party, which is in the midst of a dispute between PMK founder S Ramadoss and his son, party president Anbumani over the leadership of the regional outfit. But recent reports suggest the two are heading towards rapprochement after the alleged discovery of a tapping device at the senior Ramadoss's home, as reported by Arun Janardhanan. According to two senior PMK sources and a confidant close to the family, a complaint filed on behalf of Ramadoss about the discovery of a sophisticated audio-tapping device at his house, and the hint that the son's side may be implicated in it, had prompted a flurry of damage-control efforts by the family. G Viswanathan, who runs the VIT Group of Institutions and is a long-time friend of the family, is reportedly the chief mediator. However, the PMK and Ramadoss family later got apprehensive that the complaint provided a reason to the DMK government to send in state police into Ramadoss's house, as well as go after Anbumani. The PMK is an ally of the BJP-led NDA in the state. This added an urgency to the mediation efforts between the father and son, and as per sources, a breakthrough is near. A PMK leader said what contributed to the thaw was Anbumani's meeting last week with mother Saraswathi at a family wedding in Chennai. Anbumani and his wife Sowmya touched Saraswathi's feet and sought her blessings, as senior party members watched. The two sides reportedly went on to hold talks for nearly two hours, though Ramadoss and Anbumani made sure that they were not present together at the venue. The signs of a truce before the protest on Sunday, which is expected to attract more than 5,000 party cadres, could provide a symbolic boost to the party. – With PTI inputs

Looking beyond the U.S. for college
Indian students have always viewed the U.S. as a top study destination. However, the ongoing visa challenges, growing concerns around job opportunities after graduation, rising costs, and shifting immigration policies are causing anxiety among applicants and parents. With this looming fear of 'what next', let's explore destinations beyond the U.S. Canada Pros: Appointment of a new Foreign Minister, Anita Anand, and three other Indian-origin leaders: Maninder Sidhu as Minister of International Trade, and Ruby Sahota and Randeep Sarai as Secretaries of State Recent improvements in India-Canada diplomatic relations Postgraduate work permit for up to three years and an easier pathway to permanent residence than most other countries. There is even an express entry route. Diversity, inclusion and a supportive environment for Indian students in the campuses Cons Increased financial documentation requirements and tighter visa rules. Since January 2024, there has been a significant increase in the required proof of funds amount to be shown for the Canadian study permit. Increase in the number of visa application rejections due to policy fluctuations Rising living costs and competition in large cities Germany Pros Approximately 2,300 English-taught programmes Public universities are tuition-free. Up to 18 months post study visa to look for a job. Geographically at the centre of Europe and well connected A strong economy and job market Cons Studienkolleg requirement: Indian high school qualifications (Class 12) are not directly eligible for most public Bachelor's programmes. Students must complete a one-year Studienkolleg foundation programme and pass the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) before they can begin undergraduate studies. Some Studienkollegs accept B1 for entry, but this is rare and usually for private institutions. Public Studienkollegs often require B2 German. At the Master's level, no German language proficiency is required for admission. While courses are taught in English, German has to be learnt for daily life and work opportunities. Coursework is known to be demanding. Netherlands Pros Many English programmes available in top universities Acceptance rates are higher as compared to other countries. One year post-study work visa High quality of life Cons Coursework is demanding High living costs, especially in Amsterdam For citizenship A2 level of Dutch is required. It's beneficial to demonstrate an even higher level Ireland Pros Only English-speaking country in the European Union (post Brexit) Several major international companies have their European or EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) headquarters in Dublin Supportive multicultural environment in Dublin Cons Cost of living in Dublin Weather can be rainy, dark, and very cold in the winter Food can also be tough for Indians though more options keep opening up. New Zealand Pros Safe, student-friendly, and supportive environment English-speaking environment makes adjustment easier Pathway programme options allow you to study your dream subject even if you don't initially meet the entry criteria. Cons Far from India and a bit disconnected from the rest of the world. Can be slightly 'boring', as the cities are smaller and quieter. Dubai Pros Globally recognised Indian as well as international universities have campuses here Easy work permit availability for internships/part-time roles Safe, multicultural environment with a strong Indian presence Cons Weather can be harsh, especially in summer Restrictions around free speech and modest culture expectations Some institutions lack strong global rankings or focus on research Japan Pros High-quality education, strong global ranking, and a growing Indian student population Universities offering scholarships, English-taught programmes and favourable part-time work policies Recent growth in English-medium liberal arts programmes Safe, low-crime country Unique cultural immersion alongside technological advancement Cons Major language barrier; even in a city like Tokyo, getting by without Japanese can be an issue. Cultural norms may feel restrictive. Cold winters and high-pressure academic environment High living costs, especially in Tokyo With inputs from Kritika Malhotra The writer is Founder and CEO, Inomi Learning, a Gurugram-based career and college guidance firm. info@

Pahalgam Attack, Pegasus, Foreign Policy, Trump: Here's What TMC's Abhishek Banerjee Said At Oppn Meet
The TMC lawmaker emerged as a prominent voice at the meeting, suggesting several sharp-edged questions for the opposition to collectively raise against the Centre Ahead of the crucial monsoon session of Parliament set to commence on July 21, the opposition INDIA bloc convened a meeting on Saturday to finalise a joint strategy to corner the government. During the deliberations, Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee emerged as a prominent voice, suggesting several sharp-edged questions for the opposition to collectively raise against the Centre. Sources privy to the discussions revealed that Banerjee emphasised the need to interrogate the government extensively on the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. He reportedly pressed for accountability regarding what he termed a clear 'intelligence failure" in preventing the dastardly incident. A key point of his proposed parliamentary query was to demand an explanation for the extension of the Intelligence Bureau chief's tenure despite this perceived lapse in national security. Banerjee also turned the spotlight on the controversial Pegasus spyware issue. He critically questioned the priorities of its usage, reportedly asking, 'When Pegasus could have been used to curb terrorism, why was it used against the opposition instead?" This line of questioning aims to highlight alleged surveillance abuses and push for transparency on the deployment of such sophisticated technologies. Furthermore, the TMC leader expressed concerns over the utility and transparency of the government's extensive foreign delegation visits. He urged the INDIA bloc to collectively challenge the government on what tangible benefits the nation derived from dispatching numerous delegations abroad, particularly when the public back home was allegedly not adequately briefed about their purpose or concrete outcomes. Sources said Banerjee raised concerns over the ongoing Bihar SIR voter list review, which he alleged is being used by the BJP and the Election Commission as a 'backdoor NRC" to exclude genuine voters. He also alleged that the BJP uses 'E square (E²)" as its attack tool—ED against opposition leaders and EC against voters. Adding a touch of pointed sarcasm, the TMC leader reportedly remarked on a peculiar situation, indicating that Indian citizens felt compelled to follow President Donald Trump's social media accounts for updates on sensitive issues, including diplomatic developments involving India. 'This too should be raised in Parliament," he asserted, implying a communication gap from the Indian government. These proposed interventions by Abhishek Banerjee signal the INDIA bloc's intent to launch a frontal assault on the government's handling of national security, governance transparency, and foreign policy during the upcoming monsoon session. view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 06:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
