JBL's Tour One M3 Smart Tx headphones
Audio brand JBL's newest listening device, the JBL Tour One M3 Smart Tx ($499), has been billed by industry pundits as a game changer.
The over-ear headphones set comes with its own audio transmitter, the JBL Smart Tx.
This transmitter can be plugged into any USB-C or 3.5mm aux audio jack, not just on phones or tablets, but also on aeroplane in-flight entertainment systems. After the transmitter is plugged in, the user can listen wirelessly to the audio output. No wires or fiddling with the Bluetooth connection are required, although the latter is also available on the headphones for devices that do not have any audio output source.
The headphones and transmitter also, in tandem, support Auracast, a Bluetooth feature that allows for a single audio source to be streamed to multiple receiving devices.
The Tour One M3 Smart Tx is equipped with JBL's True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0 feature, which lets users control the amount of noise cancelled or filtered through, via the JBL Headphones app.
JBL says the headphones offers up to 70 hours of playback when fully charged, with another five hours from a five-minute quick charge. Separately, the Smart Tx transmitter promises up to 18 hours of battery life.

A new experiential store dedicated to German multi-cooking appliance Thermomix has opened at Level 2 of The Cathay.
The 5,000 sq ft store is expected to host cooking demonstrations using the Thermomix, as well as workshops and masterclasses.
In conjunction with the store's opening, the brand has also launched its latest appliance, the Thermomix TM7 ($2,980).
The TM7 offers food preparation and cooking functions such as blending, kneading, sous vide and fermentation. The functions are controlled via a 10-inch multi-touch display on the appliance, which is loaded with the brand's proprietary recipe platform, Cookidoo.

Bosch's Ultimate 10 cordless vacuum cleaner
The new Ultimate 10 vacuum cleaner has a sensor that can detect dirt and dust particles as small as 0.3 micrometres.

German appliance brand Bosch says its new Ultimate 10 cordless vacuum cleaner (from $1,299) will not just suck up dust and dirt. It will also inform you once the area that you are vacuuming is clean.
The device comes with a MicroClean sensor that can reportedly detect particles as small as 0.3 micrometres. Once the area is clean, a ring on the motor component will light up in blue.
The vacuum cleaner weighs around 3.7kg and comes with a few different nozzles, include a mini nozzle, upholstery nozzle and a flexible nozzle. The flexible nozzle has a joint that can be bent, which makes for easier vacuuming under furniture such as the bed or sofa.
Other notable features include dust box compression, which translates to less frequent emptying of the dust box, and a TurboSpin motor promising up to 70,000 revolutions per minute and between 80 and 100 minutes of run time. The motor comes with a 10-year guarantee.

Ride-hailing robot on trial for airport police is 2-in-1 patrol robot and PMD

SINGAPORE - A police patrol robot that doubles up as a personal mobility device (PMD) for officers is being trialled at Changi Airport Terminal 4. The autonomous robot, called Gibson, is outfitted with multiple cameras and sensors to help it avoid obstacles and people. Officers can also use it for transportation, to cover long distances at the airport quickly. The Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) developed Gibson in collaboration with the A*Star Institute for Infocomm Research. The trial began in early July. 'Gibson was inspired by the concept of creating a buddy robot for our officers,' said HTX engineer Seah Qi Yan, from the Ground Systems, Robotics, Automation and Unmanned Systems Centre of Expertise. 'They can use it as a PMD in their operations and transform it into an autonomous robot when not in use.' Gibson was developed to advance human-robot collaborations in the Home Team, Ms Seah added. Its ride-hailing function is a key feature that was developed in-house. Using their phone or tablet to access the robotics platform, officers can call for an available robot to meet them at a nearby pick-up point. While travelling aboard Gibson, they can select the autonomous function to reach their destination as they tend to other matters, such as reviewing incidents on their devices. Alternatively, officers may choose to drive it manually by using a physical key. Two of the robots were shown to the media on July 16 at Terminal 4. Each robot has a battery life of about four hours, and have safety features such as an automatic stop if someone attempts to get on it while it is moving . Attempts to block Gibson intentionally as it is patrolling will cause it to sound a horn. Named after inventor Arthur Hugo Cecil Gibson, who made the first motorised scooter in the early 1900s, it is the second type of police robot to be used at the airport. The first police patrol robots were introduced at the airport in April 2023, after more than five years of trials and smaller-scale roll-outs. Superintendent of Police Patrick Pang, an operations officer for planning and readiness from the Airport Police Division, said Gibson will complement existing police patrols and enhance police presence in the airport. He said: 'The ride-hailing function makes it convenient for officers to summon Gibson without having to manually search for one. 'And with the autonomous mode, our officers do not have to worry about where to park, as it can resume its patrols without returning to a designated parking lot.'

Anxious relatives await news from Vietnam wreck rescue as death toll rises to 38

Halong Bay, Vietnam - Relatives anxiously sat beside ambulances on the wharf of one of Vietnam's most popular tourist sites on July 20, waiting for news of loved ones who were on a tourist boat that capsized killing dozens. Fruits and flowers were laid on the coast for the 38 killed in the wreckage on July 19 in what some called Halong Bay's worst-ever disaster. 'At least 38 of those on board have been confirmed dead and 10 rescued,' the government said in a statement. The official Vietnam News Agency reported that all the tourists were Vietnamese, including several children. As rescuers worked into July 20 morning to salvage the sunken boat, a handful of people were still missing. The tourist vessel called 'Wonder Sea' had been carrying 53 people, including five crew members and more than 20 children, around the Unesco World Heritage Site, according to state media. Mr Hoang Quang rushed from Hanoi to Quang Ninh province at 2am on July 20 for news of his cousin and her family who were on the boat when it capsized. The couple – a housewife and fruit seller married to a bus driver – had 'tried their best' to afford the trip around the world-famous bay. 'They found the body of (the husband), not my cousin yet,' Mr Hoang told AFP. He was 'so shocked' when he heard news of the incident and immediately went to the wharf with other worried family members. 'Suddenly the victims were my relatives – anyone would be scared. We didn't know what to do, except to keep waiting,' he said. 'We think that as we are all here, she knew and she would show up. We are all so anxious... We just wish and pray for her to come back here to us.' 'Worst accident ever' By early July 20, the wreckage had been towed into the wharf and 11 people had been rescued and taken to a nearby hospital. Security guard Nguyen Tuan Anh spent the night on the wharf where ambulances were waiting to carry the bodies away – a scene he described as 'painful'. 'I don't think I have experienced this scene before. This may be the worst accident ever in Ha Long Bay,' he told AFP, adding it had been 'unpredictable and also I think unpreparable.' 'The whirlwind came so sudden and so big. The wind blew off the framework of a big stage for a grand music show nearby,' he said. Halong Bay is one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations, with millions of people visiting its blue-green waters and rainforest-topped limestone islands each year. Several hundred rescuers including professional divers, soldiers, and firefighters joined the search for survivors through the night and heavy rain, state media said. 'The whirlwind came just so sudden,' a rescue worker, who asked not to be named, told AFP on July 19. 'As the boat turned upside down, several people were stuck inside the cabin. Me and other rescuers pulled up two bodies and rescued one,' he said. 'The accident was so devastating.' AFP
