"Golden opportunity for the committee for nation-building...": JPC chief PP Chaudhary on One Nation One Election Bill deliberations
'Today a meeting was held for the 'One Nation, One Election'... Former CJIs Justice Khehar and Justice Chandrachud...were present before us, and we had an interaction. This is a golden opportunity for this committee for nation-building... All the members of the committee are above the party politics and are focused on preparing a good 'One Nation, One Election' Bill,' Chaudhary told ANI.
He said members of the committee realised and the experts also agreed that it is a golden opportunity for the panel for nation-building. He said such an opportunity will not come again.
After hearing the views of former CJIs JS Khehar and DY Chandrachud, the panel also heard the views of former MP and former chairman of the parliamentary panel on Law and Justice, EMS Natchiappan.
The members who attended the meeting today included Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Saket Gokhale, Shambhavi Choudhary and Bhartruhari Mahtab.
Answering a query, PP Chaudhary said that the panel is hearing views of judges as they are experts in the Constitution. He said they are not inclined towards any political party and are only concerned with the law and are unbiased.
PP Chaudhary, a BJP MP, said that the committee is keen to suggest amendments so that the bill can stand judicial scrutiny and the vision of One Nation One Election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi can be implemented.
The JPC chief also talked about the panel's visit to five states and a union territory and said they got valuable inputs.
He said that many political leaders, civil society members, and officials backed the proposal.
The JPC is examining the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which proposes simultaneous elections, aligning the election cycles of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
The Union Cabinet had in September 2024 accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind.
The Committee had recommended a two-step approach to lead to simultaneous elections. It said that as the first step, simultaneous elections will be held for Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
It said that in the second step, elections to the Municipalities and the Panchayats will be synchronised with Lok Sabha and assemblies in such a way that these are held within a hundred days of holding elections to the House of the People and the state legislative assemblies.
The Committee had also recommended that there should be a single electoral roll and Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) for use in elections to all three tiers of government.
The Committee had said that its recommendations will significantly enhance transparency, inclusivity, ease and confidence of the voters. (ANI)

With one day to go for the commencement of the Parliament's Monsoon Session, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday said over 100 MPs have already signed a notice to bring a motion in the House for the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma, crossing the required number of signatories. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rijiju, who was addressing the media after an all-party meeting, said, 'the signature is underway and it has crossed 100 already,' and that the Business Advisory Committee, an all-party group that decides the agenda of the Session, will decide when the motion will be moved. A motion for the impeachment of a judge has to be signed by at least Lok Sabha 100 MPs and 50 in the Rajya Sabha, as per the Article 124 of the Constitution. Once an impeachment is adopted by either House, a three-member committee is set up by the Speaker, which will comprise the Chief Justice of India or a Supreme Court judge, who will head it, and including a Chief Justice of any High Court, and a person who is a 'distinguished jurist'. The government said it will bring the motion during the Monsoon Session and has received support from different parties, including the opposition, in this move against 'corruption in judiciary'. Rijiju refused to comment on when the matter will be taken up in the parliamentary session until the matter is passed by the BAC with the Chair's approval. Formerly serving in the Delhi High Court, Justice Yashwant Varma has been at the centre of controversy since March 14, when fire personnel discovered wads of half-burnt cash at his official residence in the national capital after a fire broke out there. The then-CJI Sanjeev Khanna constituted a three-member committee of High Court judges to investigate the matter, and on March 20, the SC Collegium proposed that Justice Varma be transferred to the Allahabad High Court. Following the submission of the committee's 64-page report on May 4 — which found credence in the allegation of cash being found at his official residence — CJI Khanna sought Varma's resignation, which the High Court judge refused. Khanna then forwarded the report, along with Justice Varma's reply, to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Khanna reportedly recommended to the President to initiate the process to remove Varma. Varma has been kept off judicial work since his transfer to the Allahabad High Court. Protesting the allegations, he has moved the top court against the committee's findings, saying that mere recovery of cash does not establish his culpability.

Organised crime is Haryana's biggest industry, claims Congress MP Randeep Surjewala
Congress Rajya Sabha member Randeep Singh Surjewala on Sunday (July 20, 2025) termed Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who also holds the Home portfolio, a 'complete failure' and demanded that he step down, alleging that 'organised crime is the biggest industry in the State today'. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on the prevailing law-and-order situation, Mr. Surjewala alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had turned Haryana, the land of the Bhagavad Gita, into the land of 'Gangs of Wasseypur', claiming that the State was ruled by 'mafias, guns, bullets and ransom' rather than by the Constitution. Asserting that crime cannot flourish without political patronage, Mr. Surjewala said the police functioned at the behest of the political leadership. Those in power, he alleged, were either 'weak', 'worthless' and 'incompetent' to govern or were offering shelter to criminal elements. 'In both cases, they should quit,' he said. Citing official figures, the former Haryana Minister claimed the deteriorating law-and-order situation was reflected not just in newspaper headlines but in official statistics. 'As per the National Crime Records Bureau, three people are murdered and five sexual offences are committed in Haryana daily. In 2024, 966 people were murdered and 16,743 crimes were committed against women, which means 46 women fell victim to these crimes every day. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 4,137 people have gone missing, most cases being related to kidnapping,' he said. Mr. Surjewala further said that during a meeting of seven Directors General of Police in February this year, the State government admitted that 80 criminal gangs — including the Lawrence, Bhau, Kaushal Chaudhary, Goldy Brar, Rana and Vikas Gulia (Dubai) gangs — were active in Haryana. Blaming part of the situation on unemployment, Mr. Surjewala claimed that police officials had stated that these gangs, operating from India and countries such as Dubai, Canada, and Australia, were recruiting unemployed youth by offering amounts ranging between ₹5,000 and ₹20,000. Mr. Surjewala, who is also the All India Congress Committee general secretary, said a report compiled by him based on press reports from nine districts indicated a 'dangerous trend'. According to him, Faridabad had recorded 41 murders so far this year, followed by 38 each in Jind and Gurugram, 25 in Panipat, 21 in Kaithal, 20 in Karnal, 18 in Kurukshetra, 15 in Yamunanagar and 11 in Sirsa. 'It was a similar situation during the Indian National Lok Dal's rule in 2005, and has now even worsened,' he said. Comparing the situation with the previous Congress government, Mr. Surjewala said that prior to 2014, headlines were about sporting achievements, rising investments in the National Capital Region and Haryana's performance in development indices. 'After the BJP formed the government under Manohar Lal, the headlines changed to reports about paper leaks, corruption in jobs and atrocities on farmers. Under Nayab Saini, we are now reading about drug and sand mafias, an unbridled bureaucracy, and criminal extortion,' he alleged. Reacting to the allegations, Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli said the police had taken strict action against criminals and the process of arrests had been expedited. He added that action would soon be taken against those issuing threats from abroad.

J&K man abducted in Niger terror attack; family appeals to Modi govt for help; Indian embassy works for safe release
NEW DELHI: The family of Ranjit Singh, a senior safety officer from Jammu and Kashmir abducted during a terror attack in Niger's Dosso region, has appealed to the Indian government for urgent intervention to secure his safe return. Singh, a resident of Chakka Kundi village in Ramban district, was working for Transrail, a transmission line company, when he was taken hostage by unidentified armed attackers on July 15. In a tearful interview to ANI, Singh's wife, Sheila Devi, shared her anguish. 'My husband's name is Ranjit Singh. He works in Niger as a senior safety officer in a transmission lightning company called Transrail. On July 15, I tried to contact him, but since then there has been no communication,' she said. She recounted how, after failing to reach him, she contacted his company, only to learn of a terrorist attack at the worksite. Workers had fled into nearby forests to escape the attackers, and Singh was among those who ran. The next day, on July 16, she received confirmation from her husband's colleagues that Singh had been abducted by the attackers. 'I have no idea in what condition my husband is. The Government of India should work to bring him back. We have been suffering for the last 5-6 days. He has small children. We are very worried, where is he? Has he eaten anything or not?' he said. Singh's mother, Sadhu Devi, is distraught. Family members said she has not eaten or slept since hearing of her son's abduction. The Indian Embassy in Niger confirmed that two other Indians lost their lives in the attack, which took place near an electrical line construction site protected by Nigerien forces. The embassy said it is working with local authorities to repatriate the bodies of the two deceased Indians and to ensure Singh's safe release. The terror attack occurred about 100 km from Niger's capital Niamey. Arab News reported that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at the site. Niger has been in political turmoil since a July 2023 military coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The country faces security threats from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State, with border regions and sparsely populated areas exploited for terror activities, as noted in the US State Department's 2023 report. The Indian Embassy has issued a security advisory urging all Indian nationals in Niger to remain vigilant, while Singh's family waits desperately for updates.
