Kuwait U-16 basketball team begins indoor camp ahead of Gulf Championship

Arab Times09-06-2025
KUWAIT CITY, June 9: Kuwait's under-16 basketball team is set to begin an indoor training camp tomorrow as part of its preparations for the upcoming Gulf Championship, which serves as a qualifier for the Asian Cup Finals scheduled to take place in Bahrain from July 7 to 12.
The camp will feature 14 promising players, with the coaching staff, led by national team coach Talal Al-Qallaf, expected to select 12 of them to participate in the external camp in Cairo from June 21 to July 5.
Ghazi Al-Otaibi, Treasurer of the Kuwait Basketball Association and Head of the National Team Delegation, explained that the team's preparation program has been in place for some time, beginning with a training camp in Istanbul last January. He emphasized the need for specialized physical conditioning due to the players' recent absence from training while they focused on school exams.
Al-Otaibi added that during the Cairo camp, the Blues will play six friendly matches, including one against the Egyptian youth team. He stressed that the national team is determined to compete for top positions in the Gulf Championship, especially given Kuwait's consistent podium finishes in recent years at regional tournaments.

World Modern Pentathlon kicks off in Alexandria

CAIRO: The U-15 World Modern Pentathlon Championships kicked off Wednesday at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Alexandria, with the participation of 350 male and female athletes from 26 countries, including Kuwait. Kuwait is participating in the championship, which continues until August 17, with a team representing the Kuwait Modern Pentathlon Federation. The modern pentathlon includes various disciplines, including swimming, fencing, equestrian (show jumping), pistol shooting, running, and Laser Run (the athlete shoots at targets, then runs a distance, repeating the process several times until the finish line). The first day featured women's relay races, followed by swimming and Laser Run, before the award ceremony. The men's competitions will later begin with the steeple chase, followed by swimming and Laser Run, followed by an awards ceremony. The Egyptian duo of Ghazal Mahmoud and Nour Ramadan won the gold medal in the junior women's relay with a total score of 892 points, who won the silver medal with 818 points. The Guatemalan team came in third with 797 points. The Egyptian duo of Adam Shukri and Mohannad Khader also won the gold medal in the men's relay, while the Turkish duo finished second and the Mexican duo third. During a press conference announcing the tournament details, Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Ashraf Sobhi said that Egypt seeks to become a regional and global hub for hosting major sporting events as part of a strategic plan that began in 2018. He added that Egypt's success in organizing these events strengthens the confidence of international federations in its logistical capabilities and infrastructure and showcases the true image of Egypt to the world. He pointed out that Egypt's hosting of the U-19 World Handball Championship and the Men's World Championship amid the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to hosting the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in just five months, are all testaments to Egypt's organizational prowess. Sobhi explained that these successes prompted President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi to send a message to the international community that Egypt is capable of organizing an event of the scale of the Olympic Games. Sobhi emphasized the continuation of efforts to develop the youth and sports sector with the support of the political leadership, and with Egypt currently preparing to host the U-15 World Modern Pentathlon Championship and the Arab Championship, reflecting international confidence in its organizational capabilities. — KUNA

Kuwait U-18 faces tough test against Algeria

CAIRO, Aug 14: Kuwait's U-18 national basketball team takes on Algeria today at 7:00 p.m. in the fifth and final preliminary round match of the 22nd Arab U-18 Basketball Championship at the Cairo International Stadium sports complex. In earlier matches, Qatar faces Tunisia at 5:00 p.m., while host Egypt clashes with top-ranked Bahrain at 9:00 p.m. The tournament features six teams competing in a single round-robin format. The top two teams will advance to Sunday's final, with the third-place playoff held beforehand. Kuwait has recorded one win so far, beating Qatar 61-59, but suffered losses to Tunisia (41-78) and Bahrain (57-81). Overcoming Algeria—one of the favorites—is expected to be challenging, as the team combines strong technical and physical abilities. Algeria previously defeated host Egypt 76-74 in double overtime but lost heavily to Bahrain (54-80), another title contender. Coach Talal Al-Kallaf will depend on key players, including Captain Abdulaziz Al-Mutawa, Freij Al-Freij, and Abdullah Al-Juraid, to break through Algeria's defense, while center Ali Al-Hindal is expected to play a crucial role on defense.
