Kamal Haasan
starrer 'Thug Life' was released on June 5 with high expectations. But reviews for
Mani Ratnam
's directorial have been mixed, with criticism aimed at its pacing and screenplay. However, the multi-starrer drama opened with a solid ₹15.5 crore net collection on its first day across India, with Tamil Nadu contributing the lion's share at ₹13.35 crore.
The Hindi and Telugu versions added modestly with ₹0.65 crore and ₹1.5 crore respectively. The film's star power and initial curiosity helped pull good numbers on opening day, setting a promising tone.

Dips at the box office after day 1
However, the momentum dipped sharply on Day 2, with collections dropping by over 50% to ₹7.15 crore as per Sacnilk. Tamil Nadu again led the way, bringing in ₹6.35 crore. Day 3 saw a slight bounce back with ₹7.75 crore, showing some positive word-of-mouth.
But Day 4 dipped again to ₹6.5 crore, signaling a weekend slowdown. By the end of the fourth day, the film had amassed roughly ₹36.9 crore.
Day 5 sees sharp decline
On Day 5, the numbers declined significantly to just ₹1.13 crore. The occupancy rates in Tamil Nadu's 2D theaters reflected this, with morning and afternoon shows hovering around 13-14%, and zero occupancy for evening and night shows. This drop suggests the film's appeal is mainly among hardcore fans, struggling to attract a wider audience beyond the initial days.
Overall, 'Thug Life' has collected ₹38.03 crore net in India in five days.
The film's future box office success will rely on how well it performs in the coming weeks, especially outside Tamil Nadu.
Impressive team
'Thug Life', which marked the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after 38 years, also features Silambarasan, Trisha, Nassar, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and
Gautham Karthik
among others. AR Rahman scored the music, while the cinematography was handled by Ravi K Chandran.

No matter how big someone becomes, life isn't always kind, and the life of an actress is a prime example. These actresses who dazzle on screen often face darkness in their personal lives. One such case is that of Tamil actress Viji, whose tragic step after a betrayal in love shook the entire film industry. Viji, known for the film Kozhi Koovuthu, made her debut alongside Prabhu and Silk Smitha in the movie directed by Gangai Amaran. She also paired with Saresh in the song Edho Moham Edho Dhagam , which became a superhit. Following this, she went on to work with top stars like Prabhu, Rajinikanth, and Mohanlal in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films. After working in more than 40 films, the heroine roles reduced, so she started doing character roles. After this, she also worked on songs. For example, she danced with Prabhu Deva in the song 'Lalakku Dol Dappi Ma' in Sarathkumar's film 'Suriyan' and with Murali in the song ' Machinichi Vara Neram ' in Vijay's film 'Poove Unakkaga'. During the shooting of this song, Viji experienced back pain and encountered complications during treatment. A mistake during her back surgery left her hands and legs paralysed, confining her to a wheelchair. Although she later won a case against the hospital and her condition improved after multiple operations, film offers stopped coming her way. Moved by her situation, Vijayakanth gave her a role in Simmasanam, which turned out to be her last film. Viji's film career began at the age of 16, and her life came to a tragic end at just 34. According to a report by Tamil News 18, Viji committed suicide in her Chennai home in 2000. The news shook the Tamil film industry. Everyone thought that the cause of his death was his health, but the things written in his suicide note revealed the real reason. Her suicide note blamed a failed love affair with director A R Ramesh, who was already married. The report suggested Ramesh promised to marry her but declined later, and that three days before her death, Ramesh met Viji at a function and abused her. Viji had also left evidence of accepting the director's love in her death note. Due to this, the police arrested the director and his wife and filed a case. However, after a few years, they were acquitted. Also, in her last note, she had requested the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi not to conduct post-mortem on her body after her death.

Thug Life Day 6 India Box Office: Kamal Haasan starrer continues free falling on first Tuesday; Grosses Rs 1.75 crore

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's much-hyped gangster drama Thug Life continued its disappointing run at the Indian box office, with early estimates suggesting a paltry Rs 1.75-2 crore gross on its sixth day, Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Following a dismal first Monday that saw collections plummet to Rs 2.25 crore, the film's downward spiral is showing no signs of recovery, marking it as one of the biggest theatrical disasters for the iconic actor-director duo. After an extended opening weekend that amassed Rs 40.75 crore (with Rs 33 crore from Tamil Nadu and Rs 7.75 crore from the rest of India), Thug Life failed to manage even decent collections over the weekdays. The film's Day 6 collections indicate outright rejection by audiences. Tamil Nadu, the film's strongest market, continues to contribute the lion's share, but even there, occupancies have dwindled, with daily occupancies of under 20 on average. The Hindi and Telugu markets have contributed negligibly. The Day Wise Box Office Collections of Thug Life in India are as follows: Thursday - Rs. 17.00 cr. Friday - Rs. 7.50 cr. Saturday - Rs. 8.75 cr. Sunday - Rs. 7.50 cr. Monday Rs 2.25 cr. Tuesday Rs 1.75 cr. Total - Rs. 44.75 cr. gross in 6 days The film, starring Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan, Silambarasan TR, and others, was expected to redeem Haasan's box office standing after the underwhelming Indian 2, which grossed Rs 150 crore worldwide and was deemed a disaster. However, Thug Life is trending even lower, with a projected India gross total of under Rs 60 crore and a global gross total of below Rs 100 crore. This is a far cry from Haasan's blockbuster Vikram, which stormed the box office three years ago. The absence of a Karnataka release, due to controversy over Haasan's remarks on the Kannada language definitely dented its performance, but the loss in potential is under Rs 5 crore seeing the rejection that the movie has seen. In contrast, Housefull 5, which released a day after Thug Life, has already surpassed Rs 100 crore in India and is eyeing a Rs 200 crore global finish, highlighting the stark gap in audience reception. While Thug Life's non-theatrical deals ensure producers avoid financial losses, the film's theatrical failure is a significant blow for Haasan and Ratnam, whose reunion after Nayakan carried very sky-high expectations. With collections now barely holding on, Thug Life is set to wrap its theatrical run as one of 2025's biggest disappointments. Have you watched the crime-actioner? Share your thoughts below.
