Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Ship of Activists and Aid

New York Times27-07-2025
The Israeli navy intercepted a ship aiming to bring aid to Gaza this weekend, Israeli officials and pro-Palestinian activists said, in at least the third case this year in which a vessel has been stopped while challenging Israel's naval blockade of the enclave.
The ship was rerouted to Israel and all its passengers were safe, Israel's foreign ministry said in a statement early Sunday.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, an activist group, said it had organized the mission by the ship, which it called the Handala, to aid a population in Gaza facing rising starvation. The Israeli foreign ministry called the ship the Navarn, using another name associated with the vessel.
The ship was roughly 40 nautical miles from Gaza when it was intercepted, according to a statement by the activist group, which opposes the nearly two-decade-old naval blockade of Gaza. Twenty-one activists from 12 countries were on board, the group said, adding that the ship carried supplies like baby formula, diapers, food and medicine from Italy, from where it set sail last week.
One of those aboard was a French member of the European Parliament, Emma Fourreau, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's website.
The group's efforts to reach Gaza by sea have been repeatedly thwarted. In May, a Gaza-bound aid ship called Conscience was crippled by explosions and an ensuing fire, stopping the mission off the coast of Malta. In June, Israel intercepted the coalition's second effort, the Madleen, whose passengers included the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and another French member of the European Parliament, Rima Hassan.
After the latest vessel was stopped, the coalition described the Israeli navy's actions as a 'violation of international maritime law.'
Israel imposed its blockade on Gaza, with Egypt's help, after the Islamic militant group Hamas took control over the coastal strip in 2007. Israeli officials say the measure was necessary to prevent the smuggling of weapons into the territory.
Since Hamas led the October 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the current war in Gaza, living conditions in the territory have steadily deteriorated, and Israel has tightly controlled the flow of aid into the territory by land, sea and air.
Its restrictions have drawn condemnation from many nations and rights groups, and on Saturday night the Israeli military announced that it would revive the practice of dropping aid from airplanes, and make it easier for aid convoys to move through Gaza by land.
Before the ship was captured, the activist coalition published a statement saying that two vessels believed to be operated by the Israeli military were nearby. At that point, the ship altered its course toward the Egyptian coast, the statement said.

Could the U.S. Have Saved Navalny?

The summer sun was reflecting off the Mediterranean, warming the leather seats of a white Rolls-Royce convertible as the shadowy Russian behind the wheel cruised the cliff-top roads overlooking the Côte d'Azur. In the passenger seat rode Odessa Rae, a flame-haired Canadian actress and Oscar-winning filmmaker. She had flown to Monaco to meet Stanislav Petlinsky, a self-described 'security consultant' with a background in military intelligence who once worked in Vladimir Putin's office and still boasted access to the president. The night before, he had treated her to a €190 tasting menu of seaweed-garnished langoustine tartare and braised sea bass. But Rae wasn't sure how Petlinsky would react when she revealed the reason for this trip in July 2023, and her friends in New York worried he might abduct her.

State Department Removes Anti-LGBTQ+ Violence From Human Rights Report Draft

The Trump administration has removed all references to violence against LGBTQ+ people and gender-based violence in drafts of the State Department's much anticipated annual report on international human rights. The draft of the report, which was leaked to and first reported by The Washington Post on Wednesday, scales back its critiques of abuses in countries with a record of human rights abuses. In particular, the Post learned of drafts of human rights reports for El Salvador, Israel and Russia that completely excise references of LGBTQ+ people and violence toward those communities. The erasure of LGBTQ+ people and the abuses they face in the draft report underscores the Trump administration's intention to scale back references to human rights broadly and take its anti-LGBTQ+ agenda worldwide. 'The 2024 Human Rights report has been restructured in a way that removes redundancies, increases report readability and is more responsive to the legislative mandate that underpins the report,' a senior State Department official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to brief the news media, told reporters on Wednesday. 'The human rights report focuses on core issues.' The State Department did not immediately respond to HuffPost's request for comment. In a section about El Salvador, the draft report notes the country had 'no credible reports of significant human rights abuses.' In a previous report from 2023, the State Department found 'significant human rights issues' in El Salvador, including 'politically motivated killings' and 'harsh and life-threatening prison conditions.' This spring, President Donald Trump secured a multimillion-dollar deal with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele to allow 252 Venezuelan men in the U.S. to be deported and housed within the country's notorious new Terrorism Confinement Center, known as CECOT. After being jailed for more than 120 days at CECOT, the men, most of who had no criminal history, told stories of being physically and mentally abused for days on end. Jerce Reyes Barrios, one of the men held at CECOT, told HuffPost reporters Jessica Schulberg and Matt Shuham about his harrowing experience inside the prison. Reyes Barrios recalled a prison official saying, 'Welcome to hell on earth, where you'll be condemned to spend the rest of your lives; where I'm going to make sure that you never eat chicken or meat again.' Andry José Hernández Romero, a gay Venezuelan makeup artist, alleged that CECOT guards groped him and forced him to perform oral sex while he was in solitary confinement. A former State Department employee, Keifer Buckingham, said the removal of references to violence against LGBTQ+ people was a 'glaring omission,' especially when it comes to Russia. In 2023, Russia's supreme court deemed what it called an 'international LGBT public movement' as extremist, and the courts began their first convictions of people last year under the order. In February of 2024, a man in Volgograd was found guilty of 'displaying the symbols of an extremist organisation' after posting a photo of the LGBTQ pride flag on social media. That same month, a woman near Moscow was sentenced to five days detention for wearing frog-shaped earrings that were rainbow colored. The drafts of the reports for El Salvador and Russia were marked 'finalized,' and the draft for Israel was marked 'quality check,' according to the Post. It is still unclear when the reports, which are typically released to the public each March or April, will be sent to Congress and then the public, and if they will include these omissions. U.S. diplomats have released the State Department's annual human rights reports for nearly 50 years. Historically their findings have been widely read and anticipated by foreign leaders and diplomats, and have been used in legal proceedings both domestically and abroad. However, this year human rights advocates decried the news about the ways in which the Trump administration has softened the descriptions of human rights abuses, especially the violence against LGBTQ+ people. Uzra Zeya, the CEO of Human Rights First, an international human rights nonprofit, said in a statement that the changes were 'a radical break' from the original goal to 'objectively and even-handedly describe the human rights situation in every country and territory in the world.' 'This severely undermines their credibility and value in guiding U.S. decision-making on a wide range of critical foreign policy issues. Purging mention of elections, corruption, and global human rights abuses against LGBTQI+ persons, persons with disabilities, women and girls, refugees and other vulnerable groups runs counter to American interests and values and makes Americans abroad less safe and informed,' she continued. Amanda Klasing, the national director of government relations for Amnesty International, said in a statement that she believes the mandate to scale back the report came from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who instructed employees to delete sections that included stories from survivors of human rights violations and to ignore instances of repression in certain countries. 'The secretary's instructions were to cut everything not legislatively mandated, but the leaked documents appear to show effort to narrow the scope of what the world hears about human rights abuses around the world,' she wrote. 'The downplaying or exclusion of key issues, such as discrimination and attacks on civil society, from this year's report will hinder efforts from governments and civil society organizations around the world to respond to these abuses,' she continued. The Trump administration's erasure of LGBTQ+ people and gender-based violence has continued on other international stages. At a United Nations meeting in June, a U.S. delegate spent much of her time in a routing meeting on pollution to discuss the United States' new 'national position' on gender. 'Use of the term 'gender' replaces the biological category of sex with an ever-shifting concept of self-assessed gender identity and is demeaning and unfair, especially to women and girls,' the delegate said. In at least six speeches before the United Nations, U.S. delegates have condemned what it calls 'gender ideology,' and pushed the Trump administration's support for recognizing so-called 'biological sex,' according to ProPublica. During his first day in office, Trump signed an executive declaring that the federal government only recognizes 'two sexes, male and female,' and signaled that all references to 'gender' would thus be replaced with the term 'biological sex.'

Anti-Israel activist verbally assaults ex-IDF soldier on New York beach for wearing Star of David necklace

A peaceful afternoon on a New York beach took a jarring turn when an anti-Israel activist launched a verbal tirade against a former Israeli soldier, simply for wearing a Star of David necklace. The incident, captured on video and posted by ILTV Israel News, shows the activist shouting accusations and interrogating the man and his friends in an increasingly heated exchange. Advertisement 'Yesterday, an unhinged pro-Hamas protester targeted a former IDF soldier on a New York beach, simply for wearing a Star of David,' the outlet captioned the clip on Instagram. 'Despite her shouting and offensive behavior, the Israelis stayed calm, respectful, and composed. The only hate in that video came from one side as usual and it wasn't theirs,' the post continued. In the video, the activist approaches a man sitting on a towel with a woman and another man, accusing him of war crimes. 'You went to Gaza, right? You fought children? You killed children in Gaza?' she shouts at him. Advertisement Both men calmly answered her questions. One of them confirmed he served in the Israel Defense Forces and had been stationed in Gaza. The woman he's sitting with adds, 'He went to Gaza to help all the children that your people killed.' As the woman continues filming and yelling, one of the men attempts to de-escalate. The world does want to see your faces!' she screams at him. Advertisement She then asks if he is proud of his service. Smiling, he replies, 'I'm proud of serving my country.' AP He calmly fires back, bringing up the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack, in which over 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered and hundreds taken hostage. The man invites her to have a real conversation. She refuses. He asks if she's ever been to Gaza. Advertisement 'I cannot go to Gaza,' she replies. 'Your people are not letting me.' 'If you go there right now, dressed like that, they'll slaughter you,' he says, pointing to her bikini. 'That's not true!' she screams back. Advertisement A lifeguard eventually approaches, attempting to mediate. The protester claims the Israelis insulted her and that they are IDF soldiers who 'killed people in Gaza.' 3 After the confrontation ended, the woman shouted 'Free Palestine!' as she departed from the beach. Getty Images 'Insulted you? How did I insult you?' the man asks, still calm. Advertisement He again offers to talk — she declines. 'Why would I want to talk to your guys? You guys have killed my people! You're killing children,' she yells. 'Why are you sitting with people who kill children? Is that cool for you?' she asks the other man sitting in the group. Advertisement 'Just leave us alone,' the man replies. As she walks away, she shouts one final slogan: 'Free Palestine!' Fox News Digital reached out to the New York City Parks Department for comment on the incident but did not receive a response.
