'Absolutely devastating' sanctuary break-in sees several animals dead

Yahoo03-06-2025
The owner of an animal sanctuary has spoken of his devastation after a break-in which caused many animals to be killed.
Peter Loy, who runs Greenbank Animal Sanctuary in the Haulgh, said: 'It's devastating – absolutely devastating.
'This is supposed to be a sanctuary and I feel that I've failed them because I couldn't keep them safe.'
In the early hours of May 4 the sanctuary was broken into and a stable door forced open, releasing the chickens and goats.
The resulting stampede caused several animals to lose their lives and many more to be injured.
Peter said: 'Since the accident we've had over £3,000 worth of vet bills and we've had to spend so much money on security.'
Three ducks, seven hens, three roosters, a turkey and a guinea fowl died in the incident.
Peter said that one of the goats has been so traumatised by the break-in that she no longer leaves her stable.
He said: 'The goats are still traumatised three weeks on – she won't even come out of her stable now and she used to love her goat tower.'

Peter said: 'We take the most broken animals that no one else will – there's very few places in the country that would take these animals.
'This attack has been so horrifically detrimental to the wellbeing of the animals.'
He said that one of the goats had befriended a chicken who would sleep in the same stable at night.
Peter said: 'He used to sleep with the chicken – she would put herself to bed and they would literally stay there all night until morning.'
Sadly – during the break-in – the goat ended up killing the chicken with his horn in the panic of the stampede.
Peter said: 'Now he bleats for her at night – I think it's because he thinks that he killed his best friend.'

He said: 'I'm angry – not at the person who did it – but at the people who enabled them.
'People who do extreme things are influenced by ideology and misinformation.

'We just don't feel safe here anymore – we're now scared to leave our home and we have to have someone watch the property.
'We have given everything to these animals – they aren't just animals but feel like my children.
'It breaks my heart because I swore to protect them and failed to protect them.'
Greater Manchester Police were contacted and said that they closed the investigation because no suspect was identified.

Son of VA bowling billionaire wins bid to seal bitter divorce case after wife said he cheated with nanny, dumped her on Christmas Day

The son of a Virginia bowling billionaire embroiled in a bitter divorce worth tens of millions won a bid to seal his divorce case ahead of a courthouse showdown next week with his estranged psychologist wife. Race car-loving scion Peter Goodwin was granted his request by an Albermarle County Circuit Court judge Monday to have the entire divorce case sealed, stretching back to when he first filed to split from wife and mother of his four children Cara Goodwin in January, court records show. 5 Peter Goodwin has won a bid to seal the divorce case he filed against his estranged wife Cara Goodwin. Advertisement The sealing order means that all of the court papers in the case will no longer be publicly accessible, including Cara's accusations that Peter dumped her on Christmas Day 2023 as she held their 4-month-old baby and his papers admitting to having an affair with their former nanny Annette Lombard. The estranged couple, both 40, are slated to face each other in court in Charlottesville on Aug. 27 in a hearing that is currently slated to be open to the public, court records show. 5 Cara accused Peter of having an affair with their former nanny Annette Lombard (pictured). Lombard initially began working for the couple around 2019 when she was 21 and an undergrad at the University of Virginia — which William sat on the board of four years after being appointed by former Gov. George Allen and again by ex-Gov. Bob McDonnell. By 2020, Lombard started working at Peter's office and was eventually promoted to vice president of the company, Cara alleged in court papers. 5 A race car-loving Peter is the son of Virginia billionaire William Goodwin. 'Did your family find out what really happened and that you were lying to them too?' Cara wrote. 'I offered you $45 million and a lot of custody for years of marriage,' Peter replied. 'You trounce around your palace with 2 housekeepers and nanny and still think I owe you more. You can't even engage in conversation unless it's 100% what you want.' 5 Peter and Cara share four children. Advertisement 'I am far from perfect and have surely made some mistakes,' Peter continued. 'I felt I didn't like the way you treated me or made me feel. People get divorced because of anger and resentment, not for some one-time thrill.' 'You have no idea how to coparent… instead you threaten me about the schedule. Disparage me. Restrict my time with the kids… stomp on my boundaries,' Peter said. 5 Cara accused Peter of breaking up with her on Christmas day 2023 as she held their 4-month-old daughter. Teenager denies kidnapping and robbing 'urban explorers'

A TEENAGER has denied taking part in the "terrifying" robbery and false imprisonment of four 'urban explorers' at a derelict property a Gilsland. At Carlisle's Rickergate court, the 17-year-old – who cannot be named for legal reasons – formally entered not guilty pleas to three allegations of robbery and four counts of kidnapping or falsely imprisoning the alleged victims. Magistrates were given a detailed outline of the allegations by prosecutor Peter Kelly. He said the alleged victims were so-called 'urban explorers,' who say they were confronted by a group of males, including the defendant, on July 26 as they were looking around the large derelict building at Gilsland. In a statement, one spoke of being "terrified." It is alleged there were up to four males involved and that the defendant at one point used a baseball bat to attack one of the victims, repeatedly striking him on the legs before robbing him, taking his phone, tobacco and lighter. Magistrates ruled that the case can be dealt with at the city's Rickergate court, and they set a provisional trial date of September 25. In the meantime, the teenager, who was represented by defence lawyer Sean Harkin, was remanded in a secure youth detention facility. Throughout the hearing, the defendant's father and cousin were in the court. The defendant spoke only to confirm that he understood the hearing and to confirm his personal details. The youth appeared before the court via a prison video link.

Aldi's New Line of Zero Sugar Mocktail-Inspired Sparkling Waters Have Shoppers Stocking Their Carts Fast

Sparkling water brands and varieties are popping up all over the supermarket. And the flavor combinations become a bit more unique with each drop. Mocktails are also having a moment, and all of the classic versions that come along with them. Aldi's latest beverage drop combines the love of mocktails and sparkling water with their Zero Sugar Mocktail Sparkling Water, and it comes in three varieties: Pina Colada, Strawberry Margarita and 8-pack of 12-ounce cans will sell for $3.55. The ingredients list is made up of solely carbonated water and natural flavors and they're non-alcoholic, zero sugar and zero calories. We're guessing these have been pretty popular, as this isn't the first time Aldi is releasing Mocktail Sparkling Water. A Reddit post from June discusses the Mojito variety, and the poster stated they were 'pleasantly surprised how good it tasted. 0 calories, 0 sugar, all natural flavoring, and about $0.45 per 12 ounce can. Hopefully, my Aldi will continue to stock it because I want to try the Piña colada next week'. And 'It's yum', a commenter replied. Featured Story: One person noted, 'It's not sweet, it's similar to La Croix! I really like them, especially the strawberry margarita'. And another fan exclaimed, 'I personally loved the 'Mojito' flavor and thought it was nice and refreshing! But I also drink a lot of sparkling water which is pretty much all it is, lol'. While many Reddit users were smitten with the cocktail and sparkling water mash-up, others didn't care for it. If you're a fan of sparkling water and the flavors of these classic cocktails, this variety might be worth a try. Like most Aldi Finds, they'll only be available for a limited-time and drop between August 13 and 19.
