Brewers hold off Dodgers again for 9th straight win
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddy Peralta won his seventh straight start, Isaac Collins and Joey Ortiz homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers held off the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 on Saturday night to extend their win streak to a season-best nine. Shohei Ohtani hit his National League-leading 33rd homer and drove in three runs for the Dodgers. Tommy Edman and Miguel Rojas both went deep in the eighth to pull the NL West leaders to 8-7. But then Ohtani's flyball died on the warning track to end the eighth, and Trevor Megill threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 23rd save as Los Angeles lost for the ninth time in 11 games. Milwaukee improved to 5-0 against the defending World Series champions this year, including a three-game sweep at home last week. Peralta (12-4) wasn't particularly sharp, giving up four runs and five hits in five innings as his ERA rose from 2.66 to 2.85. But the Brewers tacked on three insurance runs to maintain the lead after the All-Star right-hander exited. After the teams traded four-run rallies in the third, the Brewers took a 5-4 lead on Collins' 363-foot homer over the short right-field wall in the fourth. They made it 6-4 on Caleb Durbin's RBI double in the sixth. The Dodgers pulled to 6-5 in the sixth when Edman snapped an 0-for-29 skid with a single and Ohtani sliced an RBI single to left. Milwaukee pushed it to 7-5 in the seventh when Andrew Vaughn hit a two-out RBI single, and 8-5 in the eighth on Ortiz's homer. Los Angeles starter Emmet Sheehan (1-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in three-plus innings. Blue Jays beat Giants 6-3 for ninth straight home win
TORONTO (AP) — Addison Barger had a career-high four hits, Will Wagner hit a go-ahead two-run double in a four-run sixth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the San Francisco Giants 6-3 on Saturday for their ninth straight home victory. Tyler Heineman homered and drove in three runs for the Blue Jays. They have won 15 of 19. Eric Lauer struck out seven in six innings as the AL East-leading Blue Jays won for the 21st time in their past 25 home games. Toronto is 34-16 at home. Jeff Hoffman finished for his 23rd save in 27 chances. The Blue Jays trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth against right-hander Logan Webb, but turned it around as five of the first six batters had hits. Webb (9-7) allowed four runs and a season-high 11 hits in six innings. Willy Adames hit a pair of solo home runs for the Giants, his 13th and 14th. It was his ninth career multihomer game. Lauer (5-2) allowed two runs and two hits in six innings. The left-hander retired the first 13 batters in order before Adames homered in the fifth. Batting depth lifts Jays to 6-3 win over Giants
TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays may have star power, but they've had contributions from unsung heroes this season. That happened Saturday afternoon when Toronto's 7-8-9 hitters accounted for all six runs and went a collective 5-for-10 in the team's 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Rogers Centre. Second baseman Ernie Clement finished with an RBI. Third baseman Will Wagner hit a two-run double. And catcher Tyler Heineman had one of the best games of his career, hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning to finish 2-for-3 with three RBI. Blue Jays manager John Schneider credits his club's hitting coaches for this lower-lineup success. 'It starts with Pop, and Lou and Hunter,' said Schneider of Toronto's hitting staff. 'And really diving into what these guys are good at and how they are going to get pitched and having a plan. And then it's the guys buying into that plan and sticking with it. Starter Eric Lauer picked up his fifth win of the season while allowing two runs and no walks in six innings of work. Lauer also struck out seven batters. Signed to a minor-league deal Dec. 13, 2024, after he was cut by the KBO's Kia Tigers, Lauer has been a strong addition to the Blue Jays' rotation in 2025. The left-hander has a 2.80 earned-run average and a 1.04 walks plus hits per inning pitched in eight starts for the Blue Jays this season. 'One, probably,' said Clement of where Lauer would rank among Toronto's unsung heroes. Story continues below advertisement 'What he's been able to do and come in and just give us a chance to win every game. It's invaluable. So, tip of the cap to him. He's probably been our unsung MVP so far.' Schneider says Lauer's demeanour hasn't changed as his quality starts increased. 'That's one of the things I love about him,' Scheider said of Lauer post-game. 'He's kind of a flat-liner…Not getting too high or too low, and kind of doing what everyone's doing, where you go out and do what we ask of you and you move on to the next time you go out there.' Accustomed to a long relief role as well as a starter this season, Lauer believes the latter is where has earned the right to be. 'I'm just trying to make sure that I stick in the rotation, honestly' Lauer said. 'That's what I want to do, and that's where I think I can help the team best.' With Bowden Francis still on the injured list with a shoulder impingement, the Blue Jays need Lauer in the rotation moving forward. Toronto will attempt to sweep the three-game homestand against the Giants on Sunday before hosting the New York Yankees in a three-game set starting Monday.
