The Indian start-up ecosystem has witnessed a significant boost with the conclusion of the 8th edition of Start-up Sprint, the flagship acceleration program by PedalStart. Hosted recently in Bengaluru, this initiative continues to make a mark by supporting over 65 early-stage founders across the country and facilitating more than USD 1.5 million in collective funding across selected start-ups.
Since its launch in October 2024, the Start-up Sprint has evolved into a dynamic platform that offers high-potential founders intensive mentorship, strategic guidance, and real-time execution support. With over 250 investors and mentors having participated in its eight editions, the program is steadily becoming a cornerstone for early-stage innovation.
Chintan Kalla, a core team member at PedalStart, said, "Our Start-Up Sprint is a launchpad designed for ecosystem enablement and nurturing the next generation of India's visionary entrepreneurs. Seeing many of our cohort start-ups raise capital and excel after attending the Sprint is incredibly rewarding. We believe this is just the beginning."
Unlike conventional accelerators, the Sprint is entirely free for selected participants and focuses on a hands-on approach. Each cohort includes up to ten start-ups, who engage in a packed schedule featuring daily mentorship, workshops, peer reviews, execution marathons, and pitch training. The sessions dive deep into business models, operations, and market strategy, helping founders refine their short-term and long-term roadmaps.
The program culminates in a pitch day where selected founders present to a room of investors. This format has already shown results, with start-ups like Shoegr, InsightAI, Nuvie, and Flowwat securing funding and gaining momentum post-participation.
PedalStart's model involves more than just mentorship. It actively collaborates with and invests in its portfolio start-ups, offering them access to a vast network of venture capitalists, angels, and industry veterans. Through a meticulous selection process, only 15 to 18 start-ups are chosen annually, ensuring focused support and a high-impact growth trajectory.
As PedalStart continues to expand its footprint, its vision remains clear—empowering early-stage entrepreneurs to build scalable ventures that can shape the future of Indian innovation. With eight successful editions completed and many more in the pipeline, the Start-up Sprint is fast becoming a defining chapter in India's entrepreneurial journey.

China's new X-shaped rail gun design doubles firepower and improves range

Chinese researchers are experimenting with a new rail gun design to help overcome the firepower limitations of existing designs. They believe that stacking two rail guns in an X-shape in a single barrel could be the solution they need. A rail gun is a futuristic weapon that utilizes electromagnetic force, rather than explosives or gunpowder, to launch projectiles. Designs vary, but rail guns typically utilize electricity to generate powerful magnetic fields that accelerate a projectile to extremely high speeds, around Mach 7 (approximately 5,344 mph or 8,600 kph). Many nations around the world have experimented with the technology, with China developing its own version in 2018. This gun was mounted on the Haiyangshan, a Chinese Type 072III-class landing ship, and was seen as a first-of-its-kind at the time. Meanwhile, the U.S. has abandoned its rail gun program owing to cost, complexity, and the rise of hyper-sonic missiles. Japan is working on a smaller rail gun—essentially a technology demonstrator—that fires tiny 0.66-pound (300g) shells from ships. X marks the spot China's existing rail gun, which seemed insurmountable during its induction, has displayed its set of limitations over time. Being a naval gun, the weapon needs to pack a punch but this requires more power, which in turn leads to issues. Too much current melts the metal components, like the U-shaped armature (which helps carry current and launch the shell). Magnetic forces can tear apart melted metal mid-shot, likened to a "magnetic saw." This leads to the rails getting damaged, reducing performance. At present, the navy's rail gun is capped at firing 33-pound (15 kg) shells, which is not nearly enough to damage a ship—suggesting the weapon is not yet war-ready. In a bid to address the issue, a group of Chinese army researchers—led by associate professor Lyu Qingao from the Army Engineering University of PLA in Shijiazhuang—proposed a x-shaped 'double-decker' rail gun which could overcome power limitations. To this end, the design features each rail gun having its own power circuit, allowing them to operate independently but in parallel. The setup utilizes four rails and two U-armatures that work together. Patent pending Vertical magnetic fields don't interfere with each other, so stacking two rail guns does not reduce performance. You can think of it like twin engines on a rocket, delivering more power without one interfering with the other. This design, the team believes, will enable the weapon to launch a 132-pound (60 kg) shell at speeds of at least Mach 7. The improved ordinance size also happens to be four times more than the current Chinese Navy requirement. The team has already filed a patent for the new 'x-shape armature' technology, but has not conducted any live-fire tests as yet. If the trials prove successful, it should translate to ranges in the region of 248 miles (400 km), with the shell able to cross that distance in as little as 6 minutes. The team also believes the impact speed of the shell could exceed Mach 4 on target. However, researchers caution that the 'proximity effect' (interference between nearby electrical currents) may still cause issues with performance and reliability. To this end, real-world testing is necessary to demonstrate its effectiveness. Solve the daily Crossword

China's exports of rare earth magnets to the U.S. skyrocket in June

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's exports of rare earth magnets to the United States in June soared by more than six times from May, a sharp recovery in the flow of critical minerals key to electric vehicles and wind turbines after a Sino-US trade deal. Outbound shipments to the United States from the world's largest producer of rare earth magnets surged to 353 metric tons in June, up 660% from May, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Sunday. That came after pacts reached in June to resolve issues around shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the United States, with chipmaker Nvidia's plan to resume sales of its H20 AI chips to China as part of the talks. China, which provides more than 90% of global supply of rare earth magnets, decided in early April to add several rare earth items to its export restriction list in retaliation for U.S. tariffs. The subsequent sharp falls in shipments in April and May, due to the lengthy times required to secure export licences had rattled global suppliers, forcing some automakers outside China to halt partial production due to shortage of rare earths. In total, China exported 3,188 tons of rare earth permanent magnets last month, up 157.5% from 1,238 tons in May, although the June volume was still 38.1% lower than the corresponding month in 2024. Shipments of magnets are likely to recover further in July as more exporters obtained licences in June, analysts said. During the first half of 2025, exports of rare earth magnets fell 18.9% on the year to 22,319 tons.
