Karnataka loses 201 medical seats this year

The Hindu3 days ago
The number of medical seats in Karnataka this academic year has gone down by 201 compared to last year. This is due to the non-renewal of 200 medical seats by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in Jawaharalal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) of KLE Society, Belagavi, and the reduction of one seat in Chitradurga Medical College.
Last year, 12,395 medical seats were available in 71 medical colleges in the State. But this year, only 12,194 medical seats are available 70 medical colleges.
Various quota
This includes 572 seats in All India Quota (AIQ) seats, 2,224 in Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) deemed quota, 5,275 in government quota, 2,819 in private quota and 876 in NRI quota, among others.
Of these, 9,263 medical seats will be allotted through UGNEET-2025 counselling by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). Last year, 9,282 seats were allotted through the KEA.
The NMC has recently blacklisted a senior doctor working as Assessor, who allegedly received a bribe of ₹10 lakh in exchange of a positive assessment report to JNMC and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested the assessor.
Following this incident, NMC has decided not to renew existing number of seats of the JNMC in under-graduate and postgraduate courses for the year 2025-26. It also cancelled the enhancement of seats and starting of new courses in both UG and PG in JNMC.
3,315 dental seats
This year, 3,315 dental seats are available in 44 dental colleges across the State. Of these, 668 are in AIQ, 911 in government quota, 1,210 in private quota and 377 in NRI quota, among other categories. All these seats will be allotted through the KEA.

Anti-sacrilege bill: Punjab Speaker forms 15-member select committee led by Inderbir Nijjar to consult stakeholders

IANS After three hours of intense debate of allegations and counter allegations, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday unanimously decided to refer the highly emotive Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scriptures Bill of 2025 to a select committee for consultation with all stakeholders. Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Saturday formed a 15-member select committee of the House for wider consultations with stakeholders on an anti-sacrilege bill. The move came days after the Punjab Assembly unanimously decided to refer the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, proposing punishment up to life imprisonment for sacrilege acts against religious scriptures, to a select committee of the House. The panel will submit its report on the bill within six months. The 15-member panel will be headed by AAP MLA from Amritsar South and former minister Inderbir Singh Nijjar, according to a notification issued by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretariat on Saturday. The members of the committee are -- AAP MLAs Ajay Gupta, Amandeep Kaur Arora, Inderjit Kaur Mann, Jagdeep Kamboj, Neena Mittal, Baljinder Kaur, Budh Ram, Bram Shanker Jimpa, Madan Lal Bagga, and Mohammad Jamil Ur Rahman; BJP MLA Jangi Lal Mahajan, Congress legislators Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal; and Shiromani Akali Dal legislator Manpreet Singh Ayali. Punjab Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi will be the ex-officio member of the committee. The anti-sacrilege bill was introduced on July 14 in the House. The bill mandates strict punishment, extending up to life imprisonment, for the desecration of holy scriptures, including the Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Quran. According to the bill, any person found guilty of sacrilege may face imprisonment ranging from 10 years to life. The guilty shall also be liable to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh, which may extend up to Rs 10 lakh. Those attempting to commit the offence may be sentenced to three to five years and shall also be liable to pay a fine which may extend up to Rs 3 lakh. Individuals found abetting the crime will be punished in accordance with the offence committed. Under the Bill, offence means any sacrilege, damage, destruction, defacing, disfiguring, de-colouring, de-filling, decomposing, burning, breaking or tearing of any holy scripture or part thereof. Sacrilege has been an emotive issue in Punjab. There has been a demand from various quarters for stringent punishment for sacrilege after the incidents of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in 2015 in Faridkot. In the police firing at anti-sacrilege protesters in October 2015, two persons were killed in Behbal Kalan, while some persons were injured at Kotkapura in Faridkot.

NMC Issues Guidelines For Admission Of PwBD Candidates To MBBS Course

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released interim guidelines for the admission of Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) to the MBBS programme for the academic year 2025-26. These guidelines have been prepared in line with a Supreme Court ruling and aim to ensure compliance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, and recent standards notified by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. An expert committee set up by the NMC reviewed the existing disability guidelines issued in 2019. Based on detailed discussions, the new approach focuses on assessing the functional ability of candidates rather than using fixed disability percentages. Key Points Of New Guidelines: Eligibility Documents: Candidates under the PwBD category must submit a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card issued via the official portal and a self-certified affidavit in the format provided in Schedule-1. Verification Process: PwBD candidates must visit one of the 16 designated medical boards for verification of their affidavit and assessment of their functional capabilities. Evaluation Criteria: The designated medical boards will assess if candidates can meet the essential requirements of the MBBS course. Boards will focus on a candidate's ability to perform rather than the degree of disability. Institutional Role: Medical colleges must ensure accessible infrastructure and avoid discrimination in the admission process. They are also advised to appoint nodal officers to support PwBD students and set up proper grievance redressal mechanisms. The NMC clarified that these are interim measures applicable only for the 2025-26 academic year. Permanent guidelines will be issued later after further consultations. Candidates seeking MBBS admission under the PwBD category are advised to visit the Intra-MCC portal for detailed instructions and the full set of interim guidelines. For any concerns, students can reach out to the designated authorities listed in the NMC notification. "Admissions will be processed by the counselling authority, based on NEET 2025 scores, institutional preferences, and verification of required documents by the concerned designated medical board(s). Medical colleges will provide accommodations accordingly," official notice reads.

Release Of 'Udaipur Files' Will Leave Many Shaken: Rajasthan Minister To NDTV

Jaipur: Rajasthan Minister Jogaram Patel, speaking at NDTV Rajasthan's 'Emerging Business Program-2025' in Jaipur, issued a warning regarding the upcoming film Udaipur Files, which is based on the 2022 murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal. The minister's remarks come at a time when the film's release remains suspended, pending a government review. "This murder happened during the tenure of the [Ashok] Gehlot government, which should not have happened," he said. "The Gehlot government was a failure, and I am confident that after the trial is completed, the culprits will get strict punishment. As far as the subject of the film is concerned, the matter is pending in court. The day the film is released, many people will be shaken." The film Udaipur Files remains under a judicial stay following an order by the Delhi High Court on July 10. The matter reached the Supreme Court on Wednesday, where a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi deferred the case to July 21 and instructed all parties to await the decision of a central government-appointed panel. The Supreme Court noted that while the filmmakers could be monetarily compensated in case of a delayed release, the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, currently facing trial, could not recover reputational damage should the film be released before the conclusion of judicial proceedings. Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing on behalf of accused Mohammad Javed, argued that the film would jeopardise her client's right to a fair trial. The Court appeared to agree with the concern. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Maulana Arshad Madani of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind who had filed the petition against the film said he had personally viewed the movie on the High Court's direction and found it to contain "so much vilification against one community." He stated, "I wish the judges could also see the movie." Gaurav Bhatia, appearing for the filmmakers, told the court that the film had received a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), though with 55 mandated cuts. The top court directed the central review committee to act "immediately without loss of time".
