'Health matters': Texas A&M's roster is completely healthy outside of one player

USA Todaya day ago
Texas A&M's 2024 season was derailed after star running back Le'Veon Moss was lost for the season after the Aggies' 7-1 start, resulting in an 8-5 finish that led to plenty of warranted questions heading into the 2025 offseason. This resulted in immediate changes, including head coach Mike Elko taking over as the defensive play caller, while quarterback Conner Weigman announced his transfer to Houston.
After landing 14 players from the transfer portal, while returning 72% of the 2024 roster, Elko and his staff entered the summer with conference, especially from a health perspective with Le'Veon Moss, and former five-star back Rueben Owens completely healthy and ready to go, according to the head coach, who reiterated so during Tuesday's press conference.
"Everybody is really ready to go for the first practice. We're ready to go."
"Marcus Garcia is the one kid that is nursing a little something, and we'll see where that goes. Other than that, we're ready to go."
Thanks to Austin American-Statesman beat writer Tony Catalina for asking the question, freshman offensive lineman Marcus Garcia is the only player dealing with a minor injury ahead of the first practice on Wednesday, which further proves that new S&C Tommy Moffitt has made a significant impact from a conditioning standpoint.
"I think, just like coaching, there is a foundation of what training looks like. There is a conditing level and a level of which you can push the body."
"In year two, that strength and condition capacity starts at a higher level."
For Texas A&M to compete throughout the SEC schedule, which features road games against Arkansas, Missouri, LSU, and Texas, health is everything, especially on offense. Last season's issues are finally in the rear view mirrior, and while some may be worried about Le'Veon Moss, while Marcel Reed's 185-pound frame has also resulted in questions, sometime's luck is all you can hope for, outside of proper conditioning.
"Health matters. Keeping our best players healthy throughout the year plays a role."
"Last year, the one positive on the injury front was that you didn't have a lot of soft-tissue injuries and didn't have a lot of things happen in practice, so the things that happened happened without your ability to control them. Hopefully the breaks go the other way."
Injuries happen, and the hope is that the Aggies can (knock on wood) get through the next 30 days without any major injury issues, which has been a problem over the last three offseasons.

Texas A&M lands commitment from the Lone Star Conference All-Defensive shortstop

After a rough 2025 MLB Draft, the Texas A&M staff had to return to the transfer portal to address depth needs in the infield. Coach Earley found a diamond in the rough within the Texas A&M University System. On Wednesday night, it was announced that West Texas A&M shortstop Elijah Batista will spend his final collegiate season in Aggieland. Batista played two years at junior college Western Texas College, where he batted .304 with 42 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in his final season before signing with the Buffs. He's an intriguing defensive prospect who earned Lone Star Conference All-Defensive honors in 2024 with a .951 fielding percentage, though that dipped to a concerning .938. With Maddox Latta opting to sign a pro deal, the Aggies needed to add talent at shortstop. With the help of Cliff Pennington, the hope is to coach up several players and let the best talent emerge. While Batista's defensive metrics slipped, his bat showed improvement. He posted a 2025 slash line of .293/.394/.494 with 40 RBIs and seven home runs. Batista is making a significant leap to Division I baseball in what many consider the toughest conference in the nation. If the staff can help him return to his 2024 form while bringing him up to speed, the sky's the limit. Astros rumors: How Jose Altuve will impact Houston's trade plans

The post Astros rumors: How Jose Altuve will impact Houston's trade plans appeared first on ClutchPoints. The MLB trade deadline is right around the corner, and the Houston Astros are heavily involved in ongoing rumors. Many expect the club to make some sort of move, considering Houston is in first place in the AL West. With a potential trade incoming, here is how Jose Altuve impacts the club's trade plans. Insider Buster Olney believes that the Astros' best options to trade for would be either a left fielder or a second baseman. Altuve, who is 35 years old, has played most of his career at second base, but has played at left field this year. So it appears the front office could trade for one of those positions and allow Jose Altuve to play whichever position they need him to. 'The Astros' best fit in what they seek in a hitter is someone who could play second base or left field, and they can move Jose Altuve accordingly. Per Fangraphs, Astros have a 94.5% chance to reach the postseason; they lead the Mariners by five games in the AL West.' It's not entirely clear who the Astros are possibly targeting in a trade. But all things considered, securing one of those two positions would be wise, especially considering Jose Altuve has shown consistency in both positions. So the front office has the privilege of addressing one or the other ahead of the trade deadline. Altuve is having another strong season as he's been one of the most consistent players in baseball throughout his career. So far this year, the two-time World Series winner owns a .281 batting average and a .342 OBP while recording 107 hits, 17 home runs, and 53 RBIs. The MLB trade deadline is on July 31. So the Astros still have some time to make a potential deal if they choose to do so. They have six games on the schedule until then with a matchup against the Athletics set for Saturday evening. Astros' IL woes continue with latest injury move

The post Astros' IL woes continue with latest injury move appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros are one of the best teams in baseball and are 1.5 games back of having the best record. The Astros are winning games despite not having some of their best players available. After their latest injury move, the Astros now have a league-leading 18 players on the IL, more than the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Friday, the Astros placed left-handed starter Brandon Walter on the IL. He joins Luis Garcia, Lance McCullers Jr., Cristian Javier, J.P. France, Spencer Arrighetti, Shawn Dubin, Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski, and Glenn Otto on the IL as just pitchers. The Astros also have some of their best talent on the IL offensively. Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Pena, Isaac Paredes, and Jake Meyers are also on the IL. Despite this, Houston is 60-43 and leading the AL West by five games over the Seattle Mariners. Walter has started nine games for the Astros this season. In those nine games, he has won only one of them, but has pitched well and improved as he went on. Walter has a 3.35 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 52 strikeouts, and only four walks on the season. He pitched so great that his WAR reached 1.4 in just nine appearances. In his last outing, Walter allowed just one run on four hits in 7.0 innings pitched. He allowed just four runs in his last three starts combined. The Astros are losing a great young pitcher with elbow inflammation. It's unclear at this time how long he will be on the injured list. It won't be easy with all the injuries, but Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown must hold down the fort for as long as possible. Colton Gordon will have a significantly improved role, and so will Ryan Gusto. But those two can't be relied on to win games on their own. Look for the Astros to consider trading for a starter to provide needed depth as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches. Manager Joe Espada's squad is more than capable of winning another World Series. But if they want that to be the reality, then they need to get healthier.
