Iowa bill requiring districts share immunization exemption information with families sent to governor

Yahoo30-04-2025
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Senate Republicans sent a bill to the governor's desk on Tuesday morning that changes the requirements for how parents and guardians are notified about immunization exemptions in K-12 schools.
For several sessions lawmakers have attempted to pass the bill. It failed in the Iowa Senate in 2024, but just a year later it cleared by the majority party in a 32 to 16 vote.
The bill requires communication about vaccine exemptions, and exemption requirements must be available for parents or guardians for public or private school students K-12 and child care facilities. That information can be available on a website or on school registration documentation.

'This isn't a pro-vaccine bill or an anti-vaccine bill. This is called an honesty bill,' said State Senator Jesse Green (R), District 24 from Harcourt. 'What's troubling to me is a handful of schools in the state that decide it's okay to lie to parents about if you don't receive shots or you can't send your kids to school. That is a lie.'
Senate Democrats worried about herd immunity for diseases, like measles, when parents may be encouraged to opt their student out of certain vaccines.'This bill sends the wrong message,' said Senate Minority Leader Janice Weiner (D), District 45 from Iowa City. 'This bill seeks to ensure that more people feel free and we are actually encouraged to opt out of life saving vaccines.'
Governor Reynolds is now able to sign the bill into law.

Bessent makes first IRS visit as commissioner, formally asserting control

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made his inaugural visit to the IRS as acting commissioner on Thursday, after he replaced Billy Long last week. Why it matters: Bessent is formally asserting his control over the agency. He's the sixth acting head of the agency during the Trump administration. In his meeting with senior IRS leadership Thursday afternoon, he highlighted the IRS's record-setting tax collection. Bessent also reminded employees about the importance of modernizing the IT systems at agency, according to people familiar with the matter. In February, as part of the broader DOGE effort, the IRS started laying off employees, right as tax season kicked into high gear. By the numbers: Treasury officials like to note that federal tax receipts did not plummet, as some experts predicted. Democrats argue the approach is penny-wise but pound-foolish. In May, the latest month for which tax receipts are available, they increased 14.7% from 2024, according to the Treasury Department. Through the tax filing season, the agency brought in $2.04 trillion, which marked a $100 billion increase from last year. Zoom in: Last week Long announced on X that he was honored to be nominated to be ambassador to Iceland, but numerous media outlets reported that he was dismissed. He and Bessent clashed over who controlled the IRS, with Long privately complaining that he needed Bessent's approval to run the agency, according to the New York Times. Bessent is also tasked with negotiating China trade negotiations and helping Trump pick a replacement for Fed Chair Jay Powell after taking himself out of the race. Zoom out: The Treasury Department and the IRS are responsible for implementing roughly 100 new tax provisions from Trump's "one, big beautiful bill." Long created a special implementation team to ensure that Trump's campaign promises were effectively turned into actual workable tax policy, with modernized IT designed for new tax credits for U.S autos purchases and loans and Trump's "no taxes on tips" plan. Bessent will continue those efforts, as well as the IT modernization.

Texas Democrats set plan to end nearly 2-week walkout over Republicans' redraw of US House maps

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott still intends to push through new maps that would give the GOP five more winnable seats before next year's midterm elections. Texas House Democrats said in a statement that under the advice of legal counsel, they needed to return to the state to 'build a strong public legislative record' for an upcoming legal battle against a new map. Advertisement 'Now, as Democrats across the nation join our fight to cause these maps to fail their political purpose, we're prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts,' said state Rep. Gene Wu, the House Democratic leader.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announces special election to re-draw maps

California is the most populous state in the union and the only one with more seats in Congress than Texas. California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that his state would hold a special election Nov. 4 to ask voters to approve a mid-decade redistricting plan. Newsom made the announcement after criticizing President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans for intending to redraw that state's congressional map ahead of the 2026 elections to create more Republican-leaning congressional districts. Redistricting efforts are also ongoing in Florida and Ohio that could benefit Republicans. Indiana and Missouri are also Republican-controlled states discussing redistricting. Altogether, those efforts could yield Republicans nine or more additional seats to bolster their House 219-212 majority in advance of an election that may favor the Democrats, as Trump's approval rating sags. California has an independent redistricting commission that is designed to limit partisan influence on the map-drawing process, but Newsom said voters could approve a measure to allow a new process to draw maps that would go into effect for House elections in 2026, 2028, and 2030, before ceding power back to the commission to draw maps ahead of 2032. "We will affirm our commitment to the state independent redistricting after the 2030 census, but we're asking the voters for their consensus to do mid-decade redistricting," Newsom said. He did not say how many seats he is seeking to flip from Republican-leaning to Democratic-leaning. He called on Congress to pass a national law that creates a national redistricting commission to effectively end partisan gerrymandering nationwide, and blamed Republicans in Congress for not backing such a proposal in the past. Christian Martinez, a regional press secretary for the Republicans' congressional campaign arm, criticized Newsom's announcement on social media as a "stunt" that "has nothing to do with Californians and everything to do with consolidating radical Democrat power." A longtime Democratic stronghold, California is the most populous state in the union and the only state with more seats in Congress than Texas. "I know they say, 'Don't mess with Texas,'" Newsom quipped. "Well, don't mess with the great Golden State."
