Clayface Budget Revealed for Mike Flanagan & James Watkins' DCU Movie
Clayface arrives in United States theaters in September 2026. The DCU movie is produced by James Gunn and written by Mike Flanagan. It was recently announced that Speak No Evil's James Watkins had been tapped to direct the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the DCU Clayface movie will have a budget of $40 million.
This is on the lower side of most comic book movies. Captain America: Brave New World, for example, has an estimated budget of around $180 million, while the exact budget for Gunn's Superman movie is not known. The 2019 Joker movie even had a slightly higher budget, as that was estimated to cost around the $55 million range.
'[Clayface] is a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay,' The Hollywood Reporter's article says regarding the film's plot.
No casting for the Clayface movie has been released at this time. It's worth noting that Alan Tudyk voices Clayface in the DCU Creature Commandos series and that Gunn previously said that actors who voice major animated characters in DCU projects will also play them in live-action. Tudyk also voices Clayface in the animated Harley Quinn show, which is not set within the DCU.
Gunn has also said that Tudyk will play a live-action character in the DCU; however, Tudyk voices multiple characters, so it is possible that he could have instead been referring to a live-action Doctor Phosphorus.
Along with Gunn, the Clayface movie is produced by Peter Safran, The Batman's Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris.
Clayface will be released in United States theaters on September 11, 2026.

James Gunn's ‘Superman' Flies Home This Week
James Gunn's Superman was pushed out of the top five at the box office this past weekend, marking the beginning of the end of its box office run. It's been a good one, with over $330 million in the U.S. so far and another $250 million worldwide. It's the highest-grossing Superman film ever, domestically not adjusted for inflation, and now the journey takes its next step. Gunn took to social media Tuesday to announce his DC Universe film will be available on digital August 15. That's this week. It's also just about a month after the film hit theaters, which is both incredibly quick but also becoming more and more standard. The film, which is available for pre-order now, will cost $30 wherever you choose to download your movies legally. No official word on any specific special features as of publication, but The Wrap teases that there will be 'an hour-long making-of documentary, various featurettes, a commentary with James Gunn, a gag reel and some deleted scenes.' If we get the official list, we'll update this article. The trade also says the physical release is on September 23. The Prime Video version also teases a 'Bonus X-Ray Edition,' too, which sounds fun. As fans start to break down the film frame by frame, TikTok by TikTok, as often happens upon digital release, Gunn is already onto the next thing. He's writing a follow-up to Superman that's not exactly 'Superman 2,' but prominently features the character. His boss, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, described it as 'the next installment in the Super-Family,' which either means Superman will team up with Supergirl, or it's some other general collection of superheroes. Whatever the case, the film is a ways off. Next up for Gunn's DC Universe is Peacemaker Season 2, which Gunn partially directed and wrote, and ties directly into Superman. Things then cool off for a few months leading into Supergirl, which is out summer 2026, followed by Clayface in October 2026. Also, the Lanterns TV show will be in there at some point too. Likely early next year. Are you going to drop the $30 to have Superman in your home? What are you most excited about rewatching? Tell us below. Want more io9 news? James Gunn's ‘Superman' New On Streaming This Week, Director Says
The DC Superhero movie hit Superman — starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel — is coming to digital streaming sooner than previously reported. Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman opened in theaters on July 11. The summary for the film reads, 'When Superman (Corenswet) is drawn into conflicts both abroad and at home, his actions to protect humankind are questioned, and his vulnerability allows tech billionaire and master deceiver Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to leverage the opportunity to get Superman out of the way for good. 'Will the Daily Planet's intrepid reporter Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), together with the aid of Metropolis's other metahumans and Superman's own four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help Superman before Luthor can completely destroy him?' Streaming tracker When to Stream, which typically reliable with its streaming reports, reported over the weekend that Superman was expected to be released on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Aug. 26. However, in a surprise move on Tuesday morning, Gunn announced on social media that the film would be arriving on PVOD 11 days earlier, on Friday, Aug. 15. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment also announced the streaming date in a press release. You can see Gunn's post announcing Superman's PVOD debut below. Where Will 'Superman' Be Available on PVOD? When Superman arrives on digital streaming, it will be available for purchase or rent on PVOD on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. Superman is available for pre-order on Prime Video for $29.99. Since digital rentals are typically $5 less than purchase prices, Superman is expected to be available for rent on PVOD for $24.99. Rated PG-13, Superman also stars Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Mikaela Hoover, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell and the voice of Alan Tudyk. Superman also features, via CGI, the live-action big screen debut of Krypto the Superdog. Superman earned an 83% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 472 reviews and a 91% 'fresh' score on RT's Popcornmeter score based on 25,000-plus verified user ratings. To date, Superman has earned $332.3 million in North American theaters and $247.8 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $580.1 million. Per Variety, Superman had a $225 million production budget and a marketing budget of $125 million. Superman is playing in theaters and will arrive for purchase or rent on PVOD on Friday.

Superman's Streaming Date Is Imminent, Barely A Month After Release
The politics of the streaming landscape continue to be bizarre, but a frequently debated practice is how long studios wait between releasing their movies in theaters and then sending them to paid VOD afterward. Now? There were recently reports that Superman would hit streaming around 45 days after release, a tight window. But it turns out the real date is even tighter. James Gunn has just announced that Superman will be able to be streamed this Friday, August 15. For reference, Superman was released on July 11, so we're talking just a 35 day gap here. The argument here, especially from the executives, no doubt, is that box office receipts taper off relatively quickly, and now that we're a month out, Superman is now clocking in at sixth place in the weekend box office. It made $8 million last weekend behind Weapons, Freakier Friday, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Bad Guys 2 and The Naked Gun. While the movie isn't being instantly removed from theaters for this, it should end its run around $600 million, a number James Gunn himself has said is not some sort of failure the way loud critics have implied. So, now they just pivot to printing money on PVOD, right? Well, about that. The problem with doing this is that it trains audiences that they can just stay home from the already hard-to-sell, expensive, often-inconvenient theater experience and just wait until something is on demand. Even if we're talking about pricey $20 rentals or $25 digital purchases, that's probably a third of what you'd be spending at a theater for a couple people plus concessions. Chill with your family in peace, eat your own food, etc. Moves like this also upset theater distributors who do not want to see ticket sales cut because the company wants to make more money on PVOD, which does nothing but hurt them. Theaters are already struggling and this only makes things worse. As we know, many didn't survive COVID and others only just hung on. There is certainly something to be said about the increasingly poor theatrical experience, but conversely, it does feel like it's still a 500% better place to see some movies, especially blockbusters, given the filming or experience of those. Even a non-superhero movie like Weapons was worth seeing in theaters due to collaborative reactions from (hopefully non-annoying) audiences. Superman did well enough at the box office, and it will probably be the top paid streaming movie soon, but it's still a questionable, surprising move. But I wonder if Fantastic Four is about to do the same thing over at Marvel. Follow me on Twitter , YouTube , and Instagram . Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy .
