Saudi Gazette4 days ago
KYIV — Russian forces launched a fresh wave of attacks on several Ukrainian cities overnight into Wednesday, with at least 15 people injured in one of the strikes.
Russia launched 400 Shahed and decoy drones, as well as one ballistic missile, through the night, the Ukrainian air force said.
The strikes targeted north-eastern Kharkiv, which is Ukraine's second-largest city, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, Vinnytsia in the west and Odesa in the south.
"Russia does not change its strategy," Zelenskyy said. "To effectively counter this terror, we need a systemic strengthening of defence: more air defence, more interceptors, and more resolve so that Russia feels our response."
A barrage of Iranian-made Shahed drones was fired in the early hours of Wednesday morning, targeting the Vinnytsia region.
Ukraine's Air Force says it intercepted 18 of them, but one struck civilian infrastructure. At least two hits on civilian buildings were recorded in the region. Eight people were injured in the attack, five of them suffering severe burns with at least two in critical condition. One of the victims underwent surgery after suffering 50% burns to their body.Nine private homes in the village of Pysarivka suffered varying degrees of damage. Many of the properties saw roofs caved in, blown-out windows and partially collapsed walls. Electricity and gas supply systems also sustained damage. The southern city of Zaporizhzhia was also targeted by Moscow. At least 30 apartments were reported damaged after a barrage of drones struck at least on district in the region.Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said there were no casualties following the overnight strikes, but did note that several civilians sustained minor injuries during evacuations.Earlier on Tuesday, Zaporizhzhia was the target of more than 400 Russian strikes on 14 settlements targeting everything from residential complexes to energy sites.Kramatorsk also came under attack on Wednesday morning. A series of explosions were heard around 01:00 am local time. One of the drones struck a multi-story residential building, causing a fire. The blaze engulfed part of the apartments, damaging multiple units.Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene and were able to contain the fire not long after it broke out, according to the head of Kramatorsk City Military Administration, Oleksandr Honcharenko. The attacks are part of the Kremlin's latest escalations of its aerial campaign against civilian areas and comes ahead of a 2 September deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Russia to reach a peace deal in its war with Ukraine, well into its fourth year.Trump threatened to slap Moscow with tariffs of "about 100%," in addition to secondary tariffs, and 100% tariffs on any country purchasing Russian energy, if it fails to reach a peace agreement with its neighbour within 50 days. — Euronews

Iran, European powers agree in principle to resume nuclear talks

TEHRAN — Iran and the European trio — the UK, France, and Germany — have agreed in principle to resume nuclear negotiations next week, Iranian state broadcaster Press TV reported on Sunday. Citing an informed source, the report said that both sides had agreed to restart talks, though the exact time and venue have yet to be finalized. The diplomatic breakthrough comes after a Thursday meeting between Iran's foreign minister and the top diplomats of the UK, France, Germany, and the European Union, where the Europeans emphasized the urgency of returning to nuclear diplomacy. They warned that failure to engage could lead to the triggering of the United Nations "snapback" mechanism, which would reimpose international sanctions on Tehran. Nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington had been ongoing via Omani mediation until a surprise Israeli airstrike on June 13 targeted multiple sites inside Iran. The strike, which killed senior Iranian military officials, nuclear scientists, and civilians, also prompted U.S. airstrikes on three major Iranian nuclear facilities, which Washington claimed were "obliterated." A 12-day conflict ensued, ending with a ceasefire on June 24. Iran has blamed the U.S. for complicity in the Israeli attack and has since demanded guarantees for any future deal. Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful energy purposes, while Western nations maintain that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons. Following his meeting with the E3 and EU, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that it was the U.S. that abandoned the 2015 nuclear deal. 'Any new round of talks is only possible when the other side is ready for a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial nuclear deal,' Araghchi posted on X. He also warned against the use of pressure tactics: 'If EU/E3 want to have a role, they should act responsibly, and put aside the worn-out policies of threat and pressure, including the 'snapback' for which they lack absolutely no moral and legal ground.' — Agencies

Zelenskyy proposes new round of peace talks with Russia next week

KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Kyiv has proposed a new round of peace talks with Russia to take place next week, stressing the need to accelerate negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war. 'NSDC (National Security and Defense Council) Secretary Rustem Umerov also reported that he has proposed another meeting with the Russian side for next week,' Zelenskyy said in a televised evening address. The president emphasized that the negotiation process must gain momentum and reiterated Ukraine's readiness for a summit at the leaders' level. 'Ukraine is ready for such a meeting,' he said. Zelenskyy also noted that talks continue with Russia on the exchange of prisoners and the return of the remains of fallen soldiers, adding that both sides are implementing the humanitarian agreements reached during the most recent round of negotiations in Istanbul last month. 'Our team is currently working on another exchange,' he added, without disclosing further details. While Russian officials have not publicly responded to Zelenskyy's latest comments, Russian state media, including the RIA news agency, confirmed the proposal, citing unnamed sources close to Moscow's negotiating delegation. Zelenskyy had earlier written on X that the implementation of the agreements from the second Istanbul talks 'needs more momentum,' following a meeting with Umerov. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to the remarks, describing them as a 'positive signal' and reaffirming Moscow's support for intensifying the negotiation process. Two rounds of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine have so far been held in Istanbul, with the latest round taking place on June 2. Those talks led to several humanitarian agreements, though a comprehensive political resolution remains elusive. — Agencies
