Everything to watch on Netflix in August, including the return of the streamer's most-watched programme ever

Daily Mail30-07-2025
August is almost here, which means one last month of pub gardens, sunning your bare legs and evenings spent drinking vino in the park. But after all that partying and soaking up the sun, what could be better than relaxing on the sofa and sticking on a stellar TV series or film?
Thankfully, Netflix has a bumper crop of new, bingeable shows to see us through. From a dreamy new romance by an icon of British TV to the return of Netflix's most-watched show to date, here are the films and programmes we're streaming in the month ahead.
My Oxford Year (Release date: 1st August)
Based on the bestselling novel by Julia Whelan, My Oxford Year is a sweeping romance about Anna (Sofia Carson), an American who gets the chance to study at, you guessed it, Oxford for a year. There, she meets the charming and clever professor Jamie (Corey Mylchreest), and the two begin a relationship that profoundly alters both their lives.
There's a stellar team working on it, including BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, best known for working on comedy The Inbetweeners. 'Comedy is his language,' says lead actress Carson, 'so his vision of this film beautifully created a timeless, heartbreaking, sweeping romance, grounded in laughter.'
Wednesday Season 2 (Release date: 6th August)
Almost three years after the first season became Netflix's most-watched show ever, Jenna Ortega returns as Wednesday Addams prepares for another term at Nevermore Academy. This time, Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries, armed with her signature wit and deadpan charm.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Emma Myers and Hunter Doohan reprise their roles, and new cast additions include Billie Piper. Don't worry: Thing is back, too.
Love Is Blind UK Season 2 (Release date: 13th August)
Hosts Emma and Matt Willis are back for a second season of Love Is Blind UK, a less-conventional approach to modern love in which strangers date and hopefully get engaged without laying eyes on each other. Over several weeks, the new couples will move in together, plan their wedding and find out if their physical connection matches their emotional bond developed in the Pods. Will any of them make it to the altar and say 'I do'?
Night Always Comes (Release date: 15th August)
Thriller fans rejoice, as director Benjamin Caron returns with a visceral nail-biter starring Emmy and Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby. The movie centres on the occasionally reckless Lynette (Kirby) over the course of one stressful evening as she tries to save her family's home before time runs out.
'What drew me to the film was its exploration of survival and sacrifice and the idea of quiet heroism,' Caron told Netflix. 'It asks the question, 'Who gets to feel safe, and at what cost?''
The Truth About Jussie Smollett (Release date: 22nd August)
The team behind Don't F*** with Cats and Tinder Swindler return with this deep dive into Jussie Smollett, the Empire actor who claimed to have been a victim of a hate crime but was later accused of (and briefly jailed for) staging the attack. Featuring interviews with police, lawyers, journalists, investigators and Smollett himself, the 90-minute documentary lets the audience decide for themselves who's telling the truth, and whether Smollett is the criminal he was convicted of being.
My Life With the Walter Boys (Release date: 28th August)
Love The Summer I Turned Pretty? This Netflix original series follows another familial love triangle, as 15-year-old Manhattanite Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez) learns to adapt to a new rural life with her guardian and eight rowdy boys. In the second series, Jackie returns to Colorado after a summer in New York, only to find that rekindling things with Alex (Ashby Gentry) and Cole (Noah LaLonde) won't be as easy as she'd imagined.
The Thursday Murder Club (Release date: 28th August)
It's finally arriving: the star-studded adaptation of Richard Osman's bestselling novel follows four irrepressible retirees – played by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie – who solve cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

Where was Wednesday filmed? Season 2 of Netflix show's filming locations revealed

Wednesday season 2 has now been released on Netflix and the new episodes were not shot in Romania. Wednesday, one of Netflix 's most successful shows to date, has made a triumphant return today with the first part of its second season. The show's stunning visuals and breathtaking sets have already sparked curiosity among fans about where the second season was filmed - a location completely different from the first season. ‌ The inaugural season of the supernatural series, starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, was fittingly shot in Romania, famously known as Dracula's homeland. However, due to various reported 'logistical challenges' during filming, Wednesday has since relocated. ‌ Tim Burton's gothic series, featuring stars such as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Fred Armisen, has returned for a second season in a drastically different setting, reports the Express. ‌ Where was Wednesday season 2 filmed? For the second season of the Netflix series, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar reportedly chose Ireland, an obvious choice given its gothic castles and dark forests. While Cantacuzino Castle in Romania served as the famous Nevermore Academy in the first season, the production turned to Charleville Castle in County Offaly, central Ireland, for its new location. ‌ Dublin locals might also recognise Willow Hill Psychiatric Facility, where Tyler Galpin (played by Hunter Doohan) is being held, as it was filmed at Clonliffe College. Furthermore, Dublin's Trinity College was also cleverly transformed to resemble Newark Airport in the opening episode of season 2, whilst Wednesday's encounter with sinister serial killer the Kansas City Scalper (Haley Joel Osment) at his residence was filmed at a housing development in the County Wicklow town of Newcastle. County Wicklow's Ashford Studios also supplied numerous interior scenes for the programme, including Nevermore Academy's Founders Pyre and the internal shots of Willow Hill and Rotwood Cottage. ‌ Furthermore, Camp Jericho and Nevermore Cemetery were constructed at a stunning 18th century estate renowned for its gardens called Powerscourt House. The 2017 film Little Women and other acclaimed productions such as Laurence Olivier's Henry V and Excalibur have similarly been filmed on the estate's grounds. ‌ Get Netflix free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description What has Ireland said about the Netflix show? Screen Ireland had previously declared that Wednesday's production would be the "largest production to ever film in Ireland". Acknowledging this cinematic achievement, Taoiseach Simon Harris marked the occasion by visiting the set. ‌ There, he held discussions with the programme's creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, alongside series director Tim Burton. The politician remarked: "I'm delighted to see Ireland continues to be chosen as a location to film series and movies which supports our economy, creates jobs, showcases our creative talents and promotes our country on a global stage. "Ireland has long been a home for MGM Television productions from the original Vikings in 2012, to Vikings: Valhalla, and now Wednesday," Lindsay Sloane, Head of MGM Television, added. "We have found resources in Ireland to be top notch and an incredibly skilled group of professionals and apprentices that help bring our productions to life." Wednesday season 2 part 1 is currently available for viewing on Netflix.

Sofia Carson's My Oxford Year hair hero revealed– the 'everywhere' balm behind her shine

Maybe she's born with it, or maybe it's Jones Road's multi-tasking hero... No spoilers, but if you've seen My Oxford Year, or at the very least some teasers of it on Netflix, you'll know two things: just how devastating the plot it, and just how incredible Sofia Carson looks. Playing the American post-grad student Anna De La Vega, Sofia, 32, has quickly shot up to style icon status thanks to the looks her character served. But away from her preppy knits and expansive winter jacket wardrobe, the actress shone in one other department that had nothing to do with her wardrobe: her hair. We spent the whole 1h53 minutes desperately Googling to find out exactly what was used on Sofia's hair on the set to give her that mirror-like shine, and we finally have the intel. Hair pro Rebekah Forecast, who did the make-up for My Oxford Year, quietly dropped a full list of everything she used on Sofia's hair, and we've pinpointed Jones Road's Everywhere Balm Hippie Stick, £36, as the product behind her shiny tresses. Think of it less as a secret weapon and more as a Swiss army knife. This slip-on-the-go multi-use balm can literally be used from forehead to heels (and yes, hair too). Initially formulated as a barrier-rich hydrator for dry skin, it's a frequent styling fallback for taming flyaways or hydrating ends. With a dab on each finger, the buttery blend smoothes frizz while adding a subtle sheen. Thanks to its rich combo of sunflower seed oil, coconut oil and shea butter, it locks in moisture and softens dry strands without a greasy finish or residue. The formula reads like a nourishing smoothie: sunflower oil to calm and hydrate, beeswax to shield, castor oil and cocoa butter to condition, and a hint of lavender, orange peel and spearmint oils for a botanical kick. These natural emollients smooth over irritation while creating a protective barrier, not just for skin but for fragile hair ends suffering from sun and styling damage. If you're interested in the other product Rebekah used on Sofia, the line-up also included Oribe's Hair Spray, £43. This seriously luxe mist is like gold dust, and sets the hair without making it feel product-heavy or sticky. There's a reason it has a cult celebrity and hair stylist following. As for Sofia's volume, R&Co Rodeo Star Thickening Style Foam, £15.50, was used to raise her roots. For fine to medium hair that could use serious lift and body, this isn't your standard mousse: it adds instant density without stickiness, thanks to a blend of vitamin E for shine, aloe vera to soften and moisturise and kiwi extract to help balance moisture and protect strands. Another product that is definitely premium, but also gives premium results. The fact that Rebekah uses a range of fine sprays and volume-boosting products tells us that Sofia might actually have quite fine hair, which makes the styles she boasted for the Netflix movie all the more impressive. If even fine-haired girls can get shine and volume like that, without strands looking greasy, they're products we want for ourselves.

Elizabeth Hurley gazes adoringly at Billy Ray Cyrus as couple put on a loved-up display at The Inheritance premiere in London

gazed adoringly at her boyfriend Billy Ray Cyrus as trhey attended the premiere of her new Channel 4 show The Inheritance in London on Wednesday. The actress, 60, put on a loved-up display with the country singer, 63, as they held hands and posed together at the event. Elizabeth turned heads in a red figure-hugging midi dress with a cut out detail along the chest. The Bedazzled star added height to her frame with a pair of gold heels and complimented her look with matching earrings. Billy Ray opted for a black short-sleeved shirt along with a matching pair of trousers and black shoes. Also in attendance at the event was Rob Rinder who looked dapper in a dark brown suit and beige striped tie. The Inheritance sees twelve strangers arrive at a grand English country estate, lured by the irresistible opportunity to inherit a chunk of a vast fortune. The fortune belonged to a glamorous benefactor known only as 'The Deceased', (played by Elizabeth) who has left video messages for the players from beyond the grave. To release money from 'The Inheritance', the players must work as a team to complete a series of challenges – and in similar vein to The Traitors; the better they perform, the more money is released, and the bigger the prize pot. But The Deceased had one condition: to win the game they must persuade all others that only they should be entrusted with the money. The event comes after Billy Ray continued to enjoy his first UK summer at Elizabeth's £6m country pile on Wednesday. The pair's relationship began following his divorce from Firerose - and his third marriage. He had met Elizabeth on set of the 2022 movie Christmas In Paradise and as he was navigating through the split, he received a message from Liz. 'I felt like, "Wow, can life get any harder? Can it get any tougher?" For me, at a certain point it was like, you can't get knocked down any flatter than laying on your back when life is kicking you. And in this moment... a friend reached out.' Billy then tried to recall the contents of the message and explained she had said, 'Hey, it looks like life might be a little bit tough and just wanted you to know I'm in your corner; you've got a friend in your corner.' When he first received the text, the performer revealed that at first he didn't know who the message was from. 'So, I text back, I go, "Who is this?" And it's like, "Elizabeth Hurley." Of all the people to reach out to me in that second that maybe I needed most… this friend who made me laugh.' He later gushed that the actress is 'a great human being' and also 'impressively brilliant.' 'She reminds me a lot of Dolly Parton. She's a very smart businesswoman. If you can laugh together, you can make it through everything.' The star also reflected on how he has also gotten close to his girlfriend's son Damian as well. 'It's great that God brought them into my life when he did. It's just a good thing. It's been a long time since I've been this happy.' Miley's mum Tish Cyrus was previously married to Billy from 1993 until their divorce was finalized in 2023. Billy shares daughter Miley as well as Noah, 25, and Braison, 31, with Tish. He also became stepfather to her other two children from a previous relationship: Brandi, 38, and Trace, 36. He is also dad to son Christopher, 33, whom he welcomed with ex Kristen Luckey. Elizabeth lives in her £6million 13-bedroom estate in Herefordshire with son Damian, who she welcomed with the late Steve Bing. The sprawling Georgian estate, which is Elizabeth's main home, also boasts five bathrooms and its own lake. She has owned Donnington Hall since 2012 that she bought with her then-fiance, Shane Warne who passed away in March 2022.
