Stephen Wilson Jr's heartbreak just weeks before NFL draft national anthem performance

Daily Mail24-04-2025
While country music singer Stephen Wilson Jr. will be performing the national anthem at the NFL Draft tonight, he nearly experienced a family tragedy earlier this month.
Wilson was set to perform at the charity festival Hogs for the Cause in New Orleans, but he announced on April 3 that his mother was in the ICU and 'fighting' to stay alive after an ATV accident.
Wilson shared with his fans that she was life-lined from a cornfield before saying that she would be undergoing surgery the following day.
'I love her dearly & I can not leave her at this moment,' he wrote in a statement posted to social media.
'... We are praying for a full recovery for her. thank you for understanding.'
Thankfully, Wilson's prayers were answered as he announced two days later that his mother had been stabilized and had made 'great progress.'

Wilson ended that statement by saying that his scheduled show for April 6 in Georgetown, Texas would go on.
He has not posted about his mother's condition since, though he wrote on Thursday that he was 'honored' to perform at the Draft.
Last year, the 'Star-Spangled Banner' was performed by Caleb Carroll.
Wilson's performance will come at 7:45ET before the Draft kicks off in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The first round of the NFL Draft, or 32 picks, will be held on Thursday, with the second and third rounds set to be completed on Friday.
Rounds four, five, six and seven will then be held on Saturday.

Barcelona fans makes Marcus Rashford feelings clear after 'miss of the season' calamity

Marcus Rashford started his first friendly for Barcelona on Sunday, helping Hansi Flick's team to a 5-0 win against Italian side Como to bring their pre-season campaign to an end Barcelona fans have hailed Marcus Rashford's first start for the club - despite the Manchester United loanee missing an open goal. Rashford, 27, had come off the bench in Barca's three previous friendlies but the absence of Robert Lewandowski gave him the chance to lead the line during Sunday's 5-0 victory over Como. ‌ The England international helped Barcelona get off to a flyer against the Italian side, assisting Raphinha's goal to make it 3-0 in 38th minute. Lamine Yamal made it four just before the break but there was still time for Rashford to get on the scoresheet. ‌ Unfortunately, after latching onto a pass from Yamal and rounding Como goalkeeper Jean Butez, the on-loan star shaped up for a right-footed shot but dragged his effort wide of the post. Rashford was stunned with his miss and wouldn't get the chance to make amends after Hansi Flick subbed him off at half-time. ‌ But the forward, who's a few weeks behind his team-mates in terms of fitness, still made a good impression. "Missing a goal doesn't define you, your awesome performance does, keep going Rashy," one fan commented on Rashford's Instagram post. "So sad you missed that open shot you were unlucky my bro but you played really well," another said. "Don't try that against Real Madrid, okay," a third joked. "Prime Rashy will be back it's a matter of time," one predicted. Team-mates Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres also commented emojis on Rashford's post. "Good performance, good win," the 27-year-old wrote as the caption. "Ready for what's coming." Flick will have to decide whether what's coming is a start against Mallorca on Saturday or a place on the bench. With Lewandowski injured for the opening game of the La Liga season, the decision will be between Rashford and Torres. ‌ Flick is a big fan of Rashford's versatility which makes him a useful option as a substitute. After beating South Korean giants Daegu 5-0 to conclude their pre-season tour of Asia, the Barca manager explained: "He can play at No.9 or No.11. We changed it because we had to be careful with Ferran. We wanted to see how he adapted to the position." The United loanee feels that playing as a striker is becoming 'more natural'. "For me, playing as a number nine is becoming more comfortable, more natural," Rashford told Spanish Youtube channel xBuyer. "Small things, such as playing back to goal, it's becoming easier for me. You're always in front of the goal so you're always dangerous."

Two-way star Hunter makes solid Jaguars debut

Results do not mean too much, but NFL pre-season games do offer the first set of clues about how the new season will go league's major stars will not play too often in the opening games, but some top rookies have already made good first impressions as competition for starting places hots of the big talking points revolve around the quarterbacks, but there is also the NFL's 'unicorn' and a new Patrick Mahomes bodyguard worth discussing. Two-way Travis makes Jaguars debut Travis Hunter signalled his intention to play both offence and defence as he made his debut working as a receiver and cornerback for the Jacksonville second overall pick of this year's NFL Draft admitted he "was a little nervous at first" as he started one of the most high-profile debut seasons in the had two catches for nine yards in his 10 plays as a receiver before switching and playing eight snaps on head coach Liam Coen labelled it a "solid" start and plans to give Hunter more defensive work next week - with the team intent on deploying their talented rookie on both sides of the ball. Talking point - can Sanders earn starting spot? Shedeur Sanders made an eye-catching debut for the Cleveland Browns that raised suggestions he has a chance to be the team's starting quarterback this season. It would be quite the turnaround after his high-profile draft slide down to 144th overall - but beyond the hype he still faces an uphill battle, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett ahead of him along with another rookie in Dillon did not field their starters against the Carolina Panthers and Sanders has not had any practice time with the first team - only getting a start on Friday because of injuries to Pickett and he made the most of his opportunity and despite head coach Kevin Stefanski insisting he was "in evaluation mode" and "not diving into a quarterback competition", Sanders has given him a selection headache. Have Chiefs found the man to protect Mahomes? Patrick Mahomes threw just one pass for one yard in his first outing since being on the losing side in the Super Bowl - but it was for a touchdown in his brief 48-second seasonal of more interest was the impressive debut of rookie left tackle Josh is the man the Kansas City Chiefs hope can solve the problem they had all last season - protecting their star Chiefs used four left tackles last year but their issue keeping Mahomes upright ultimately cost them a Super Bowl three-peat as he was sacked six times and manhandled by the Philadelphia showed enough in his first 11 snaps action to suggest he could be the answer to their problems. Rookie quarterback watch - Dart on target for Giants Jaxson Dart may just be Russell Wilson's back-up but his exciting debut has excited New York Giants fans singing his threw for 154 yards and a touchdown and ran for 28 yards in a poised and balanced outing - against some Buffalo Bills starters - that probably just topped Sanders for the best performance by a rookie one overall pick Cam Ward played just two series for the Tennessee Titans but his second was an 11-play touchdown drive where he showed promising chemistry with top receiver Calvin pick Tyler Shough replaced Spencer Rattler in the second half of the New Orleans Saints' 27-13 defeat by the Los Angeles Chargers and had a 54-yard touchdown pass and a 'pick six' in an up-and-down not technically a rookie, JJ McCarthy will play his first season with the Minnesota Vikings after a knee injury cost him the entire campaign last had a tear in his eye before his first game in 364 days, where he led one solid 13-play drive in what could be his only action before the NFL season opener. A comedy of errors for the Cowboys A messy first Dallas Cowboys game for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer culminated with even Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb getting a flag - despite not even being on the was on the sidelines for the defeat against the Los Angeles Rams but strayed almost onto the field and was hit by an official racing down the led to Lamb not only taking a big hit but also Dallas getting one of 11 flags in the game, which cost them 83 yards and angered the new man in charge."I hope the guy's OK. But we have to be better than that," Schottenheimer said. "CeeDee knows better. We know better."Dallas, who has star defender Micah Parsons watching on despite requesting a trade away from the team, will hope that comedy of errors is not a sign of things to come this season.
