Four stars who could be in line for a NBA Playoff trading card value boost

New York Times18-04-2025
LeBron James and Stephen Curry don't need a momentum boost within the sports card world. A robust, lucrative market continues to run strong and will remain intact for a long time to come. But who will be the next big NBA player with unflinching trading card hobby staying power to emerge?
Victor Wembanyama was a popular pick, but his injury has put the brakes on his rapid ascent.

During playoff time last year, the hobby latched on to the Minnesota Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards.
His most recognizable rookie card — 2020 Panini Prizm #258 — in the popular Silver parallel with a gem mint PSA 10 grade sold on average for $597 via Market Movers, which tracks card sales across multiple marketplaces, as of April 15, 2024. A monster run during last year's playoffs by Ant-Man during which searched for his name on eBay shot up 1,850 percent compared to the start of the season launched this card into orbit with average sales on May 9 up to around $1,840.
One week later, Edwards' cards drastically dipped in value to average sales of $1,120. The Silver rarely reached or topped that daily average ever since. In fact, we're right back where we started with Edwards. His 2020 Prizm Silver in a PSA 10 is even lower than where it sold one year ago before his sharp uptick. This card sold for $561 on Monday.
So again, a hungry sector of the industry will watch this year's NBA Playoffs salivating for the next undeniable superstar.
Let's take a glimpse at a selection of players who could be in line for a playoff bump if results go their way:
The Oklahoma City Thunder guard could be hoisting his first regular season NBA MVP award after this season, and his card market is responding accordingly.
SGA's 2018 Prizm Silver rookie card in a PSA 10 went from an $831 average price on Feb. 9 to a $1,550 average on March 13, a 107 percent increase. The price has fluctuated since then, but stood with a $1,180 average price as of April 13.
It certainly appears expectations for Gilgeous-Alexander are reaching fever pitch with his market building up to this point for the last few years.
What will it take for SGA to maintain this height? Or build even further on this? Probably an NBA Finals appearance and a title, respectively. After all, the Thunder enter the postseason as the oddmakers' favorite to capture the crown.
Los Angeles' next cornerstone superstar represents the closest candidate to eventually enter James and Curry territory.
This started well before the forward's seismic trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers a couple of months ago. Moving across the country to the NBA card hobby's version of the New York Yankees should only accelerate his market. Still, Dončić's rookie cards received an NBA Finals bump about a year ago.

His 2018 Prizm Silver parallel in a PSA 10 built average sales of $1,120 on May 21 last year. The Mavs' trip to the finals against the Boston Celtics propelled the card's sales as high as $2,060 on June 1. The loss to Boston probably didn't aid in maintaining prices close to the peak, however, with sales falling as low as $991 three weeks later.
Then came the Lakers' bump for Dončić. The card jumped to as high as a $1,770 average price on Feb. 3, leveling off to a $1,410 average price as of Monday. It would be hard to imagine a massive dropoff for the forward if the Lakers flounder in the playoffs since it's clear he's the next face of the franchise, though. An increase up to last year's peak and even higher wouldn't be a shock if Los Angeles navigated its way to this year's finals.
Apologies to the Cleveland Cavaliers' Donovan Mitchell and the Celtics' Jayson Tatum. An Antetokounmpo-led Milwaukee Bucks playoff resurgence in the Eastern Conference could re-energize a once flourishing card market for the Greek Freak.
Sales for Antetokounmpo's 2013 Prizm Silver in a PSA 10 will always be far less frequent given the card's small PSA population count of just 88. For perspective, Dončić's version has a pop count of 2,375. That's also why the price for the Bucks star's cards will be much higher.
The last sale for Antetokounmpo's version went for $6,370 on March 25. That's down 26.7 percent from a year ago. And in February 2022, the two average sales for the card were $34,700. The card's current value is at its lowest point since 2019.
Given the Bucks rank fifth to win the Eastern Conference via BetMGM at +6000, the likelihood of an NBA Finals run probably seems slim. But maybe any sort of playoff heroics could provide a shot of adrenaline into his card market.
This feels like a potential Ant-Man 2.0 situation.
The 2021 No. 1 pick will make his NBA Playoff debut when the Detroit Pistons challenge the New York Knicks in the first round. Cunningham is in the midst of the best season of his career, and the Knicks feel vulnerable.
In mid-November, his 2021 Prizm Silver in a PSA 10 averaged only $203. The price popped as high as $660 in early March and now averages $561. That's right along where Edwards' version landed last year at this point.
Any sharp upward turn could be sudden and the staying power might be quick like Edwards last year since this Pistons group carries no playoff history at all. The addition of Cunningham and the Pistons into the playoff picture has at least brought a budding star player into the conversation.

OKC Thunder to play Trail Blazers four times before New Year's in 2025-26 season

It's August, which means the NBA has dropped its entire 2025-26 regular season schedule. It's an oasis in a desert content. Teams learned when and where they'll face their opponents ahead of the six-month campaign. The Oklahoma City Thunder will enter under the national spotlight. The NBA champions are a popular pick to repeat. They're tied for the most national television games at 34. Expect them to be the team most opponents circle in their calendar as their barometer test. Examining the Thunder's 2025-26 regular season, here is one quirky takeaway from their slate — they will play a Northwest Divisional foe four times before the calendar flips to 2026. They will play the Portland Trail Blazers four times within the first two months. The Thunder will travel to face the Trail Blazers on Wednesday, Nov. 5. They will then host Portland on Sunday, Nov. 23. Within the same month, they return to play at the Trail Blazers on Sunday, Nov. 30. Finally, the Thunder will host the Trail Blazers for their traditional New Year's Eve home game on Wednesday, Dec. 31. It's something OKC has done over the years. As both teams went in opposite directions, the Thunder have dominated the Trail Blazers over the last four years. They're on an active 16-game win streak that spans four seasons. Portland last beat OKC in April 2021. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has put up monster numbers against the rebuild squad. Now, this year's four matchups could be more exciting. The Trail Blazers hope to be competitive. They acquired Jrue Holiday and brought back Damian Lillard. While the latter will miss most of the season recovering from a torn Achilles, his return signals going for it. That said, the Thunder should still win the season series. They're the consensus best team in the NBA. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers are still far away from being in the same stratosphere. It should be four wins for OKC early on to pad its record.

Rick Carlisle Signs Contract Extension With Indiana Pacers After Postseason Success

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to a multi-year contract extension that will keep him in Indianapolis. He was originally hired by the Pacers in the summer of 2021. Since then, the team has steadily improved. Their regular season win total has climbed every year since Carlisle's first, with Indiana finishing 50-32 in 2024-25. They had home court advantage in the playoffs for the first time since 2014 this past season. In the postseason, Carlisle has been excellent during his current stint with the Pacers. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals as the sixth seed in 2024, then the NBA Finals earlier this year. Having a 5-2 record in postseason series is remarkable and has changed the outlook of the franchise. 'Since his return to the Pacers in 2021, Coach Carlisle has been integral to our success, which includes leading us to consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearances and our first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years,' Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard said. The contract extension comes two years after Carlisle's last new deal with the Pacers. He received an extension in 2023 after steadily improving the team's fortunes via success and players development – and since then he has continued to win games. Indiana is 97-67 since their head coach last signed an extension. He is the winningest coach in the NBA portion of the Pacers franchise history with 338 victories. No other coach has more than 250 (Frank Vogel), though legendary coach Slick Leonard has 529 in total when counting ABA wins. Wins have always followed Carlisle, who is 11th all time in victories by an NBA head coach and will reach 1,000 this season. He's guided eight teams to 50+ wins in a single campaign, has a Coach of the Year honor under his belt, and has been the head man in the NBA Finals twice – including a championship with Dallas in 2011. (Photo by) Getty Images Winning is priority number one for the Pacers, and Carlisle does that. The traits that have made him the right coach for the franchise in recent years go beyond that, though. His creativity, for example, often sets up his teams for success while also forcing his players to become more versatile. He, along with the play of star guard Tyrese Haliburton, has set an identity for the Pacers, something the team was lacking prior to Carlisle's arrival. They play fast, physically, and in a way that's random to their opponents but comfortable to them. Beyond the strategy, Carlisle has improved tremendously as a player development coach in recent years. He acknowledged an increasing love for one-on-one skill work with young players a few years ago, and that has continued for he and his staff even as wins kept coming for the Pacers. 'Rick has been phenomenal for me,' Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith said in 2023. He has developed tremendously and has been given more playing time with Indiana after being traded to the franchise from the Boston Celtics. He, along with Jalen Smith, Obi Toppin, Jordan Nwora, and Haliburton represent a list of young players that came to the blue and gold from other franchises and improved quickly. James Wiseman and Jay Huff hope to be next, and Carlisle will be guiding them. That doesn't even account for the likes of Andrew Nembhard, Isaiah Jackson, Bennedict Mathurin, Jarace Walker and other Pacers draftees that have grown under the team's current coaching staff. All four of those players have important seasons coming as Indiana enters a season with lowered expectations thanks to Haliburton's injury. Having a coach who can develop those talents further while still racking up wins is exactly what the Pacers should want right now, and they added to Carlisle's deal largely because of those abilities. '(Owners) Herb Simon, the Simon family, Steven Rales, Kevin Pritchard and our players make Indiana such a special place,' Carlisle said of his new extension. 'Let's go!'

Ex- Boston Celtics owner Steve Pagliuca group working to salvage CT Sun sale

The group led by former Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca is reportedly working with the Connecticut Sun's current owners, the Mohegan tribal nation, to salvage the sale of the team with the WNBA, per a recent article from ESPN reporters Alexa Philippou and Ramona Shelburne. Per ESPN, the Sun's current owners plan to offer several options to the league, which appears to prefer moving the ball club out of New England entirely to Houston, Texas. The Mohegan tribe will reportedly propose one of 1) selling the team to Pagliuca's group with the implied move to Boston, 2) a sale of the team to former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry with a move to Hartford, Connecticut, 3) selling a minority stake of the team, or 4) allowing the WNBA to buy the franchise for $325 million and relocate it where it likes. While there may be some degree of disagreement between WNBA fans in the region as to whether it would be better to keep the team in a market where there is great support for the team even in down seasons, or to move it to a bigger metropolitan area in Boston, fans across New England have voiced strong support for keeping the team in the region. At the same time, the tribe reportedly feels pressured by the WNBA to sell the team to a buyer that would anger fans in both Connecticut and Massachusetts. "A source close to the ownership group says the tribe is frustrated and feels the league is presenting a one-path option: relocation of the team to a market of its choosing at a value of its choosing," writes ESPN. The situation has many wondering why the league can't simply grant an expansion team to Houston and let one of the deals to keep the team local. With the Seattle SuperSonics debacle of the NBA yet to be resolved nearly two decades on with rancor still a stain on NBA fandom, a path forward that could make all parties happy seems within reach. If the WNBA can get out of its own way, that is. Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:
