Sabah to host Malaysia's premier agriculture showcase

Borneo Post30-07-2025
There will be many interesting activities including Agriculture E-Games, immersive aquaculture and 3D aquarium exhibitions, the popular Agro MADANI Sale, and many other exciting highlights.
KOTA KINABALU (July 30): The 'Hari Peladang, Penternak dan Nelayan Kebangsaan (HPPNK)' or National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day this year has a deeper national significance as the event marks its 50th anniversary.
After three decades, the event makes its return to Sabah this year from Aug 1 to 3 starting at 9am until 10pm at the Sabah International Convention Centre in Kota Kinabalu.
Themed 'Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi', the event not only commemorates five decades of the agriculture sector's progress but also paves the way forward in reaffirming the nation's commitment to food security and agro-economic resilience.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Isham Ishak, recently shared insights on the strategic significance of HPPNK 2025, its future-focused offerings, and the crucial role of food security in Malaysia's national development.
'This isn't just a celebration. HPPNK 2025 marks a turning point in how we view and value our agro-community. It is a moment to acknowledge their contributions, but also to invite the younger generation into the fold,' he said.
He said the 2025 edition of HPPNK will feature four key thematic zones: 'Agro Millenia', 'Cukup & Terjamin', 'Sejahtera MADANI', and 'Jualan & Keusahawanan'.
Each segment was curated to highlight not just the strength of Malaysia's agro-sector, but also the emerging opportunities within it.
'Agro Millenia' focuses on engaging youths through innovation and education. It features activities such as agricultural e-sports, farm-to-kitchen showcases, artisanal coffee appreciation, and entrepreneurship talks.
'We are reshaping the narrative. Agriculture is no longer about hardship; it's about innovation, opportunity, and technology,' Isham explained.
'Through 'Agro Millenia', we hope to show the younger generation that the future of farming is smart, profitable, and rewarding.'
In 'Cukup & Terjamin', visitors will experience Malaysia's most advanced agrotechnologies and innovation.
These include smart irrigation systems, aquaculture innovations, drone farming, and real-time robotic monitoring.
One of the highlights of the technology and innovation segment is the opportunity for visitors to engage in hands-on agricultural experiences.
These include a combine harvester simulator, allowing them to immerse themselves in the realistic environment of operating a rice harvester during the harvesting season.
Visitors can also get up close with various livestock breeds, including top hybrid cattle, premium goat species, saga chickens, and even ponies.
'We are demonstrating that Malaysia is serious about building a self-reliant, resilient food system. Reducing our dependency on imported food is critical,' he said.
The 'Sejahtera MADANI' segment embraces the values of unity, sustainability and dignity.
Exhibits will spotlight successful local farmers, fishermen, and breeders while presenting the nation's collaborative work through pavilions like the ASEAN Farmers Village and Sabah Pavilion.
In addition, there will be an award-giving and appreciation ceremony for successful farmers, breeders and fishermen.
'We want to honour these unsung heroes with many of whom work tirelessly in remote communities who keep our food system alive and our economy turning,' Isham noted.
The 'Jualan & Keusahawanan' segment, which features over 136 booths from local agropreneurs, offering everything from ready-to-eat products to artisanal condiments and health drinks.
The popular 'Agro MADANI' Mega Sale returns with over 500 varieties of Malaysian dishes and essential goods sold at discounts of up to 30 per cent.
'For many small agropreneurs, this platform is their launchpad to wider markets. And for visitors, it's a chance to experience the diversity and richness of Malaysian food culture, all under one roof,' Isham said.
One standout attraction is the Coffee Island, featuring Sabah's local brews and top Malaysian coffee brands, allowing visitors to enjoy coffee tasting sessions in a relaxed setting.
There will also be a 'Happy Hour' sales which will see products sold at steep discounts.
The lead-up to HPPNK 2025 also featured two regional programmes which are 'Road to HPPNK Series 1 & 2' in Tawau and Sook, Sabah.
Isham said these events attracted over 30,000 visitors and generated hundreds of thousands of ringgit in agro-based sales.
'From the energy on the ground in Tawau to the community spirit in Sook, it's clear that the people here are deeply connected to the land and sea.'
Central to the event is the concept of food security.
Isham emphasised: 'History has taught us that no nation can truly be sovereign if it cannot feed itself. Food is about power, security and dignity. HPPNK 2025 is a reminder of that truth.'
'We must understand that food security is a strategic imperative. Whether in times of peace or crisis, a nation's strength is tied to its ability to produce and control its own food sources. Our farmers, breeders, and fishermen are our frontline defence in this regard.'
Beyond public celebration, HPPNK 2025 is designed to have a long-lasting impact.
From workshops and forums to digital learning hubs and business matchmaking, it offers valuable exposure for aspiring entrepreneurs and established agropreneurs alike.
The ministry expects more than 500,000 visitors over the three-day event, generating savings of up to RM3 million in household spending and strengthening local agro-industries.
Isham hoped that the public would not miss out on the event.
'Come and join us. This is a celebration of our people, our culture, and our future. HPPNK 2025 is where tradition meets technology, where the past 50 years inspire the next 50. It's time we stand together to support the hands that feed the nation.'
With its golden jubilee theme resonating across every segment, HPPNK 2025 promises not just a celebration, but a call to action for Malaysians to cherish, empower, and sustain the very people whose strength guarantees the wellbeing of our beloved Pertiwi.

HPPNK 2025 draws over 300,000 visitors, RM76 Million in sales, boosts Sabah's agro potential

Mohamad Sabu (centre) speaking at the press conference. Arthur is at left. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 6): The National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 held in Sabah on August 1-3 has significantly boosted the state's profile in the agriculture sector, drawing over 300,000 visitors and generating more than RM76 million in sales. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the event — held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of HPPNK — attracted strong participation from 130 agro-based entrepreneurs and drew visitors from Sarawak, Brunei, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 'This year's event is a testament to Sabah's growing role in the nation's agri-food sector. We've seen tremendous interest and economic impact,' he said during a press conference on Sunday. Among the wide array of products showcased were local snacks, cooking pastes, frozen goods, traditional drinks, herbal and botanical items, agricultural inputs and Sabah-grown coffee. Mohamad Sabu also announced that 14 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and strategic agreements had been involving a total of RM526 million in investments across the agriculture, fisheries and energy sectors. He confirmed that his ministry will host the Malaysia Agricultural, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (MAHA) next year, alongside a smaller-scale version of HPPNK, in view of this year's milestone celebration. 'Now, we are seeing more people, especially the youth, becoming successful in agriculture. My ministry will continue efforts to show them this can be a lucrative and fulfilling field,' he said, adding that more youths from Sabah are entering the industry and inspiring others. In his speech earlier, Mohamad Sabu outlined four key focus areas of HPPNK 2025, aimed at driving structural and cultural shifts in Malaysia's agriculture sector: 1. Agro Millennia – Designed to empower youth through education, training, career development, and access to government support including grants and entrepreneurial guidance. 2. Sufficient and Guaranteed – Focused on strengthening the agro-food ecosystem through technology and sustainable practices to boost productivity and food security. 3. Madani Prosperity – Emphasising the central role of farmers, breeders and fishermen in domestic production to reduce reliance on imports. 4. Sales and Entrepreneurship – A strategic platform to promote local agro-food products and expand market reach, including international exposure.

Isham Jalil threatens to sue Madani cytros for defaming him as Najib's adviser to acquire 25 Boeing planes

FORMER UMNO supreme council member Isham Jalil is on the look-out for lawyers who would assist him to draft letters of demand (LOD) for Madani cybertroopers who accused him of acting as an adviser to incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak in his 2017 negotiation with Donald Trump who was the then US president. Isham who was once a special officer to Najib claimed that the cybertroopers had slandered him given he was 'never directly involved in the Boeing acquisition negotiations nor was he part of Najib's delegation to the US'. 'I like it when PH (Pakatan Harapan) politicians and their 20-sen walanon gang (hardcore PMX supporters) do this kind of work. Because I have the opportunity to sue them and make millions,' he penned on his Facebook page. 'When I win the suit, I will buy a motorbike.' Setting the record straight, Isham clarified that Najib did not buy the 25 Boeing planes as claimed by detractors but in fact, he had 'signed a non-binding MOU (memorandum of understanding' instead. 'We didn't buy but leased 16 from the international leasing firm that bought the aircraft with terms depending on the current market conditions,' revealed the former UMNO information chief who was expelled from the party on Dec 7, 2023 for opposing the party's collaborations with DAP in elections. 'The then Malaysia Airlines CEO can confirm this.' Isham who has in recent times become a harsh critic of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim further took a swipe at the Madani government 'for directly buying 80 aircraft through government-linked company (GLC) Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG) by incurring a debt exceeding RM100 bil'.' For the record, MAG had in 2016 placed an initial order for 25 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft with 13 planes having been received since November 2023 while the remainder are to be delivered progressively until 2027. However, MAG had on March 20 this year finalised an additional order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with deliveries expected to take place from 2025 to 2035, according to Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Although only 30 planes were originally planned, critics believe that the recent order for another 30 appear to be a last-minute add-on which is likely to please Washington in order to unlock tariff relief from 25% to 19% – a dangerous precedent where strategic assets are used for political appeasement. 'The current total fleet of MAS is approximately 80 aircraft with many years left before the expiration date,' he justified. 'You want to buy twice as many aircraft and double the fleet size with hundreds of billions in debt even though your profit has dropped to only RM54 mil?' Added Isham' Our airline's record is not good and always loses. Moreover, the aviation industry is both instable and full of risks. 'And yet you still want to take on debts amounting to more than 10% of the country's total accumulated debt because you want to buy 80 more aircraft? 'If your investment or 'gamble' turns awry, who will bear these hundreds of billions in debt? It'll be the rakyat who eventually suffer.' – Aug 5, 2025

RM12 billion from agriculture sector: Hajiji

Published on: Tuesday, August 05, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 05, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji said as a State blessed with fertile land and a tropical climate well-suited for agriculture, Sabah is taking bold steps to support the national food security agenda. Kota Kinabalu: The State Government remains committed to ensuring the agriculture sector continues to be a key driver of growth and a catalyst for a more dynamic and resilient Sabah economy. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor said the sector is not only the third-largest contributor to the state's economy but also plays a critical role in safeguarding national food security. 'This sector contributes RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 'Therefore, the State Government is prioritising efforts to further strengthen this sector through more strategic and inclusive approaches,' he said at the closing of the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Sunday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing of HPPNK 2025. Also present were Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, along with federal and state leaders. Advertisement Hajiji said as a State blessed with fertile land and a tropical climate well-suited for agriculture, Sabah is taking bold steps to support the national food security agenda. Among the concrete measures is the re-establishment of the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year — after being dissolved in 1981 — to boost the local rice industry and raise the Self-Sufficiency Level (SSL) of rice to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. 'This is in line with the priorities of the Federal Government led by Anwar who has placed strong emphasis on agriculture, especially rice cultivation,' he said. He emphasised the importance of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart farming to increase production efficiency, boost productivity, and attract younger generations to the sector. He said Sabah currently has 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) that had produced over 1,494 metric tons of food products, generating more than RM4.32 million to date. Hajiji also announced Sabah's first high-impact strategic investment in the Blue Economy sector — development of a European Union-standard tuna and deep-sea seafood landing port in Kota Kinabalu by the State Government in partnership with a local company, with an investment value reaching RM360 million. He said the port is expected to land 50,000 tons of tuna annually, with the potential to generate up to RM1.8 billion in economic value per year, positioning Sabah as one of the major deep-sea players. He also urged the farming, livestock, and fishing communities in Sabah to embrace change and adopt new technologies in modern farming practices and farm management. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
