Found: The Perfect Holiday Shoe You Can Wear Everywhere, Including The Office

Elle5 days ago
The messaging surrounding what to wear at this time of year might speak primarily to European getaways, beach days and wedding ceremonies, but the reality most of us live out is more complex. Sure, there's your five days in Sicily booked, but there's also six deadlines and that yearly review that crops up mid August. We can't abandon all commitments just because it's the last month of the summer. Sob.
The toing and froing that comes with the eighth month of the year manifests most in our footwear, especially if the weather on home soil is more than fine. Investments in new shoes need to work as hard as our passports (or office passes) as we switch between on and off modes. Shoes need to be able to walk into a beach bar and thrive as much as they need to be able to take us comfortably through the now extra-sticky commute and into whatever that day's schedule has in store.
So, with this in mind I got to searching for a summer sandal that could do it all. As an ELLE editor, my starting place for most trends and must-haves is the catwalk. But, not this time. I searched through my usual go-to sites for such things and spent a couple of lunchtimes strolling the stores close by to our central London office. Nothing jumped out, ticking a few of my criteria rather than all of them. Then, when researching another feature I spotted Miu Miu's leather clogs on its SS25 catwalk.
This wasn't the first time I'd seen the slip-on sandals, but it was the first time I'd considered them the solution to my midsummer footwear find. The shoe, available in a selection of shades of patent or suede leathers, is a simple clog-like style that feels at once a classic and a fresh option that moves away from the dad sandals that have dominated the summer footwear market for — forgive me — far too long.
On the runway, it was worn with white cotton skirts, classic beige raincoats (Brit-summer approved), and in the case of Cara Delevingne's runway look: a black patent skirt suit. Together, these ensembles were enough proof that it would work with so much of what I plan on wearing for the rest of the summer. And despite it being a 'trendy' catwalk shoe, the nostalgic design felt enduring, which makes up for its three-figure price tag in that I can be sure I'd return to it summer after summer. I'm very into my cost-per-wear these days.
Choosing which colourway to go for came next. Black patent felt like the most sensible option, while brown suede offered an extra note on texture for summer layering. In the end, it was the red patent that felt like the best for me and my wardrobe. I often find myself turning to hints of scarlet in summer — gingham, floral silk scarves, a does-it-all scrunchie — and so this pair would round out that equation. I chose my usual size and found them easy to break in and get to wearing here, there and everywhere fast.
Of course, this being Miu Miu and so the idea of a simple shoe worn simply feels at odds with its bookish-meets-sexy-meets-sporty ideology. Enter the accompanying demi socks.
Yep, demi socks. The wearing of the instep coverings feels as crucial to the sandal as the sandal themselves. Doing little more than hiding your instep (or up to the knee if you wish), the accompanying socks, which come in a three pack, add a directional element that feels at once completely unnecessary and entirely essential to fulfilling Mrs Prada's original style directive. Choose colours that feel purposefully obtuse. Lime green worn with red feels particularly potent, but I might have to go back for the rosy pink ones.
What is left to be said about this clog-style shoe is that like anything with a strong wooden sole, there is a little noise about them. They're not so much clip-clop, but a gentle tap is there with every step. Does it bother me? Not at all. I'm happy to make a little commotion for and with these wear-everywhere summer sandals.

Selena Gomez Just Wore the Perfect Summer Pants

Selena Gomez and her fiancé Benny Blanco were spotted following a romantic evening in Century City in Los Angeles on August 5. The two were spotted leaving a cooking class, with Blanco looking the part as the ever-supportive fiancé in a pasta-sauce-stained Rare Beauty apron. Gomez was all smiles in a polished but relaxed date night outfit. Capris have been the go-to pants for It girls like Bella Hadid, who has worn slim black pairs reminiscent of pedal-pushers. Instead, the Only Murders in the Building actress chose a tailored denim pair from Jacquemus, which slightly flared just below the knee like a traditional capri, making them the perfect choice of pants for a cool summer evening. Gomez kept things simple on top, opting for a black La Ligne cardigan with a simple white trim and matching tank top, both from the brand's collaboration with Glee actress Dianna Agron. The look was complemented by a sleek pair of black kitten heels, also from Jacquemus. Recently, Gomez has been busy with Rare Beauty's newest fragrance, which launched at the end of July. Amaya Espinal, Love Island USA's season 7 winner, posted a TikTok video of the two trying out the scent. This fall, the actress will also return to Hulu for season 5 of Only Murders in the Building, which premieres on September 9.

What a relief – a modern comedy in which no one is grappling with their sexual identity

Can a man and a woman ever truly be best mates without the thorny issue of sex rearing its ugly head? It seems odd that in this age of gender neutrality, diversity this and diversity that, for a sitcom to be grappling with this age-old dilemma. But that's exactly where we are with Platonic (Apple TV+), in which Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, as Will and Sylvia, bicker and bitch, fall out, fall in, and generally display all the hallmarks of an old-school married couple. But they are – and always will be, unless the show ultimately loses the plot – just good friends. Will and Sylvia are a couple you really are rooting for not to get together. To circle back to that opening question, boy does it feel good to land in a world where absolutely no one is grappling with a sense of their sexual identity. There is a place for all that, but it's become such a box-tick in modern comedy that it's now a cliché. Platonic, for all its witty barbs at the state of the world, plays a straight bat when it comes to relationships. We're in the second series now and the pattern (I'm being kind and not saying formula) is clear. Artisan craft brew master Will, a man-child with an unfortunate fondness for garish bucket hats, and Sylvia, a law graduate who gave up her career to be a full-time mother-of-three – yes, she's bitter – are so in tune with each other they could be twins. But closeness strikes sparks and the explosions come at regular intervals. Rogen and Byrne, both at the top of their game, have an absolute blast ripping into each other in spats that kick off playfully but invariably tip over into the spiteful, causing chaotic schisms in a friendship that gets patched up over and over. Because these two are meant to be together, just not together. It makes for an honest, fractious and totally believable portrayal of a male and female friendship, built around a plot that bounces through bar business bust ups, mid-life crises – Will is around two decades too old to dress the way he does, we all know one of those – and astutely observed takes on the ever widening generation gap between boomers, Gen-Z and whatever other label has popped up in the last five minutes. Everyone around Will and Sylvia gets jealous of their special relationship as a given, the comedy flip-flops between broad slapstick – in scenes oddly reminiscent of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, things inevitably go belly up whenever the pair get together – and the slyly subtle. A bed scene soundtracked by Brit indie band Wet Leg, I confess, tickled the schoolboy smutkid lurking inside me. There is breathing space, supplied by an enjoyable supporting cast in which Carla Gallo as Sylvia's sardonic female friend and Luke Macfarlane as her implausibly buff lawyer husband provide shades of light relief. You need that because being around Will and Sylvia can be both hilarious and exhausting; they're the kind of people you look forward to coming round, but who you breathe a huge sigh of relief when they leave. This Retro-Inspired Bob Adds Movement, Shape, and Just the Right Amount of Drama

If there's one haircut that proves the power of a fresh makeover, celebrity endorsement, and impressive PR, it's the bob. What was once a daring—and universally feared—style has become the most-requested cut of the year, with everyone from Hailey Bieber to Zendaya experimenting, and a never-ending list of bob trends taking over (see the hydro bob, myriad baroque iterations, and the blunt bob 2.0 for proof). The next installment, according to hair-trend forecaster Tom Smith, is the bell-bottom bob. 'This new cut has minimal layers; it's flipped out at the ends and can be styled with or without bangs (fringe),' he says. 'It's cut either with perfect precision or a more undone texture and is slim to the head near the parting before flaring out with volume at the ends.' Beyond the aesthetic itself, the real point of difference from the sea of bob trends flooding your Instagram feed right now comes down to its inspiration. The silhouette, Smith explains, is modeled on the flared cut of bell-bottom jeans—the equally nostalgic '70s favorite—which has also been enjoying a resurgence lately. Offering a more dramatic look than your standard blunt or classic bob, Hailey Bieber, Daisy Ridley, and Anok Yai are among the famous faces who have been spotted wearing the flicked-out bell-bottom bob. Better yet, it's versatile when it comes to styling. Case in point: If you've taken the plunge and opted for a micro-bob, simply flick out the ends to create the bell-bottom finish with a curling iron or a wide-bristle hot-air brush (the new BaByliss Air Wand includes the perfect attachment). Likewise, you can wear it with either a side or a middle part. 'If you want to showcase a more symmetrical face, opt for a middle part and a perfectly sharp flip at the ends. If you prefer a softer look, try a side part with less-precise flicks and tuck one side behind your ear,' Smith says. For a heatless approach, Smith suggests 'gently pre-drying the roots of your hair in a downward motion, then using a small round brush with a dollop of styling mousse, or a heat-protectant spray, to flick out the ends.' For staying power, he recommends wrapping the flicked ends in a small Velcro roller while they cool to set the shape, then finishing with a strong-hold hairspray. 'For a softer, more wearable look, shake your hair out after styling and mist on a texture spray for an undone finish,' he adds. Whether you opt for a messier bell-bottom style or perfectly placed flicks, heat-styling tools, or hardworking sprays, expect to see this trending hairstyle—in all its many guises—cropping up everywhere this summer.
