From Delhi to Melbourne, Virat Kohlis 17 years of dominance in international cricket

Mint2 days ago
New Delhi [India], August 18 (ANI): On this day, way back in 2008, Virat Kohli, a young, fiery Delhi youth with a classy cover drive that could drive the cricket purists into absolute awe and the ability to dominate the toughest opponents and game situations, made his international debut against Sri Lanka in an ODI.
Between lifting the U-19 World Cup for India as a captain in Malaysia to bullying top-class bowling attacks of Australia, Pakistan, England, and South Africa into submission even years after his rise in the 2020s, Virat has transformed into one of the greatest batters of all time. Not the most gifted batter in a star-studded Indian dressing room, it was his hard work, dedication, hunger to pile up big, and a lion's heart that drove him to the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) status.
-An ambassador for Test cricket
Right from his Test debut till his very last image edging an outside off stump delivery bowled by Scott Boland to slips in his beloved Aussie land, Virat, while being inhumanely consistent across all formats simultaneously, lived, breathed, and ate Test cricket. Over the course of his 123 Test career, he proved himself as one of the biggest promoters of the long format, who could fill up the stadium with his mere presence.
In 123 Tests, Virat scored 9,230 runs in 210 innings at an average of 46.85 with 30 centuries and 31 fifties. His best score of 254*. He ended up as India's fourth-highest run-getter in white clothing, but his impact goes way beyond the numbers.
Virat was also India's most successful Test captain, with 40 wins and 17 losses in 68 Tests. He transformed a young, under-transition Indian team into a fearless unit and gave their fast bowlers the encouragement, backing, and environment they needed. From accepting losses meekly, he transformed Team India into a unit that would give opponents death stares even while losing, suggesting that they could win a battle, but they would not win the war easily.
Be at home or away, Team India looked competitive. With a new fitness culture inculcated by a protein-shake-sipping, gym-freak Test skipper who gave up his beloved Chole Bathure and Butter Chicken for a legendary career in whites, the players got a new lease of life, agility, and sharpness on the field. He led India to seven wins in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA) conditions, the most by any Indian captain.
After Tendulkar, the baton was passed on to Virat, who delivered some all-time SENA classics with the bat, ending as India's second-most successful batter in these conditions with 3,909 runs in 46 Tests and 89 innings at an average of 49.48, 10 centuries and 17 fifties.
-An ODI maestro with a calculator
With 14,181 runs in 302 matches at an average of 57.88, including 51 centuries and 74 fifties in just 290 innings, Virat proudly wears the title belt of undisputed ODI cricket champion. He is the third-highest run-getter in the format and India's second-best after Tendulkar (18,426 runs in 463 matches with 49 centuries). His otherworldly consistency and records in the formats have earned him this aforementioned title.
He is the only ODI cricketer with 50 centuries and holds the record for the highest runs in a single Cricket World Cup edition, with 765 runs in 11 matches at an average of 95.62, with three centuries and six fifties way back in 2023, winning the 'Player of the Tournament' honours in the tournament.
From his valuable 35 during the 2011 WC win while chasing 275 against Sri Lanka, which came while assisting Gautam Gambhir to his record-breaking century at Wankhede against New Zealand 12 years later in front of his idol, Virat has made some valuable contributions to India's quest for ICC titles.
The 'Chasemaster' has a calculator in his head, which reduces even the most gigantic targets to an absolute cakewalk. In successful run chases in ODIs, he has an enviable record of 5,998 runs in 107 matches and 101 innings at an average of 88.20, with 24 centuries and 26 fifties and a best score of 183, boasting a stat sheet that could be a whole career profile for many.
Under his captaincy, India reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and the semifinals of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. He led India to 65 wins in 95 ODIs, 27 losses, a tie, and two no results.
-An absolute match-winner in T20Is
In T20Is, Virat is the third-highest run-getter and India's second-best after Rohit Sharma (4,231 runs), with 4,188 in 125 matches and 117 innings at an average of 48.69. He has scored a century and 38 fifties, with a best score of 122*.
While there are several T20 masters who could outdo him on parameters like runs, strike rate, sixes and World Cups, no one comes close to his impact-making ability. He is the top run-getter in the ICC T20 World Cup tournament, with 1,292 runs in 35 matches and 33 innings at an average of 58.72, with 15 half-centuries.
In successful T20I run-chases, he has scored 1,651 runs in 42 matches and 39 innings at an average of 78.61, with a strike rate of 135.43 and 16 fifties. Shrinking his numbers down to the T20 World Cup makes for an even more stunning sight, having made 519 runs in 12 matches and 11 innings at an average of 173.00, with a strike rate of 137.66 and seven fifties, with a best score of 82*.
He is a two-time 'Player of the Tournament' winner in T20 WCs (2014 and 2016) and earned a fairytale farewell from the format with a 'Player of the Match' award for a match-winning 76 in the final against South Africa. In this tournament's knockouts, he has scored a half-century in five out of six innings. If WWE has 'Big Match John', John Cena sending fans happy with their moneys worth with a fine in-ring performance, cricket has 'Big Match Virat', making sure fans sleep with peace and smile on their faces, taking all the headache of chasing big runs himself.
-A trophy collector with a historic knockout record
Virat has won joint-most trophies by a cricketer, next to Ricky Ponting, with a Cricket World Cup, two ICC Champions Trophies (2013 and 2025), a T20 World Cup (2024) and an ICC U19 title (2008) to his name. One could also count the three ICC World Test Championship maces he won to keep India at the top of the Test Rankings as a captain, when it was not a proper competition.
He is the top run-getter across all ICC white-ball tournaments combined, with 3,834 runs in 90 matches and 87 innings at an average of 61.83, with six centuries and 33 fifties and a best score of 117. Across the knockout stages of these tournaments, he has scored 904 runs in 20 matches and innings at an average of 56.50, with a century and nine innings. Including the two WTC finals he played, he becomes the only cricketer with 1,000-plus runs in ICC tournament knockout games, with a century and nine fifties in 24 innings at an average of 51.20.
Across all formats, Virat has scored 27,599 runs in 550 matches and 617 innings at an average of 52.27, with 82 centuries and 143 fifties and a best score of 254*. He is the third-highest run-getter in all of international cricket.
He has also won 10 ICC Awards as an individual, the most by any player, including the coveted ICC Player of the Decade award (2011-20) and Cricketer of the Year award twice (2017 and 2018). (ANI)

Cheteshwar Pujara backs 38-year-old retired star over MS Dhoni as strong contender for India next coach, his name is...

Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli Star India Test cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara gave a surprising answer when asked about who could be the next coach of the Indian Cricket team?. Pujara made an unexpected choice and chose a recently retired player with whom he shared the dressing room for nearly a decade during the majority of his Test career. Pujara named Ravichandran Ashwin as a potential coach of the Indian Cricket team Pujara named Ravichandran Ashwin as the one who could eventually lead the Indian team, despite the fact that many cricket experts had previously predicted MS Dhoni for the position. The 103-Test veteran selected Ashwin while answering some interesting questions about his teammates on EspnCricinfo. In the same discussion, Pujara named Ravichandran Ashwin as someone who can talk about cricket 24*7. Ashwin retired from international cricket in December last year during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, finishing as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 537 dismissals from 106 matches. Cheteshwar Pujara last played a Test for India in 2023 World Test championship Pujara last played for India in 2023 World Test championship. He made his Test debut in 2010, while Ashwin played his debut match a year later. Both Pujara and Ashwin were the key player of the Indian team as they enjoyed historical success together. When asked to pick a teammate who is most likely to dye his hair blue, Pujara named MS Dhoni. He chose Sachin Tendulkar as the player who looks after him the most. The 37-year-old picked KL Rahul as the one most likely to attend a Taylor Swift concert. And when it came to naming a player who could end his career by breaking every record, the 37-year-old unhesitatingly named Virat Kohli. Though Pujara is still an active cricketer and is expected to feature in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, but he worked as a broadcaster during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Asia Cup 2025: Shreyas Iyer knocks hard, but T20I doors stay shut

The India selection committee left the fans with several questions while announcing the squad for the Asia Cup 2025, as many deserving candidates failed to make it to the 15-member team. Given the cut-throat competition on the Indian T20I circuit, several names were bound to be left out. However, none of the missing players were as deserving as Shreyas Iyer, who's revamped himself and shut down his critics with his stupendous performances over the past two being thrown out of the BCCI Central Contracts in 2024, Iyer took the setback on his chin and redeemed himself by leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title. Fast-forward to the 2025 edition of the tournament, Iyer even revamped his game and managed to get rid of the only chink in his armour – short-pitched star batter dazzled at the crease as he hooked and pulled fearlessly, taking on fast bowlers and depositing them into the stands with utmost ease. Moreover, Iyer's strike rate was also through the roof—a whopping 175.07, a sensational improvement from his previous best of 146.86. However, none of his immaculate leadership, revamped batting, and altruistic approach were deemed worthy enough by the Ajit Agarkar-led Indian selection committee, who left Iyer's behemoth T20I comeback go into the wham-bam from Iyer's willow was left to rot in a corner, it was the newly crowned prince of Indian cricket who found his way back into the T20I reckoning based on 'some promise shown in his recent performance in Test cricket,' as said by the chief metrics for different players?Shubman Gill was named the vice-captain of the shortest format on the tour of Sri Lanka 2024, but couldn't match the high-risk template of the Suryakumar Yadav-led side, which starts its innings infifth gear itself. Despite not being known to play flashy strokes from the word go, Gill has been entrusted to adapt to the role as the management foresees him as the future all-format Gill has been backed to eventually transition into the role, Iyer, whose hands are itching to launch massive sixes for India in T20Is, has been asked to wait for his opportunity.'In terms of Shreyas, it's again unfortunate. You tell me who he can replace in this squad. It's not his fault, nor ours—it's just that only 15 can be picked, and at the moment, he has to wait for his chances,' said Agarkar in the press Agarkar mentions that they only have 15 slots to fit, he also implied that Iyer wasn't even worth including in the reserves, as those five spots have been taken by Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi India cricketer Abhishek Nayar, who also recently served as the assistant coach of the team, couldn't get his head around the fact that Iyer didn't deserve a place even in the top 20."I can't fathom or understand what reason could justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of the 20-member squad. I'm not even talking about the final 15, but the 20 itself, which sends a clear message that Shreyas Iyer is not in the selectors' scheme of things, at least from a T20 perspective,' said Abhishek Nayar on 'Dark Knight' of the ODI sideIyer has been the silent guardian and the watchful protector of the Indian ODI team in the past two years. However, India's own commissioner, Gordon in Ajit Agarkar, feels that he isn't the hero the T20I team needs right now. Iyer's performances have often gone under the radar as he's silently done his job under the shadows of the big stalwarts.A world-record 530 runs batting at number 4 during the ODI World Cup 2023 and a well-compiled 243 runs in the victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign – the highest in the team—have all raised Iyer's stocks as a true unprecedented T20 peakMoreover, having led his teams to successive IPL finals – KKR in 2024 and Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2025 – Iyer has also proven his worth as a leader. The PBKS skipper truly led his team from the front in 2025, scoring 604 runs from 17 innings at an average of 50.33 with six Iyer's impact on the team was beyond numbers, as he left a golden chance to complete his maiden IPL century in the first match itself by deciding not to farm the strike and let Shashank Singh finish the innings with a flurry of boundaries. The selfless act sent the right message across the team as the leader was ready to sacrifice his personal milestones in pursuit of the team's the knockouts, Punjab faced the Herculean task of chasing 204 against the best bowling attack of the tournament, but Iyer took it upon himself to take them over the line as he even took on the beast named 'Jasprit Bumrah' to seal the deal for his more does the BCCI want? Before IPL, Iyer had also proven his worth as a captain by leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph with another thunderous show with the bat, which saw him score 345 runs from eight innings at an average of 49.28 with one hundred and as many it seems that the selectors have turned a blind eye to Iyer's performances, who continues to knock hard on their doors, only to remain unheard. The Mumbai batter has done everything in his control to deserve to don the T20I jersey. From successful leadership tenures to audacious strokeplay at crease, Iyer boasts a strong CV which could've easily made him the captain in any other BCCI and the team management don't even consider him worthy enough to be in the team, let alone give him any leadership position. As Iyer remains out of contention for the T20I side, the question remains: what more does he have to do to find a place in a team that is willing to tinker with its settled combination to accommodate some players, while his unprecedented performance continues to be ignored?- EndsTune InMust Watch

Plenty to ponder for selectors

The Indian cricket selectors face some serious deliberations on Tuesday as they sit down to pick the squad for next month's Asia Cup in the UAE. The tournament is crucial as it will reveal the team's direction ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Most of the squad picks itself after India's triumphant T20 World Cup in June, but there are a few big questions: Should Test stars Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, both fine T20 players, be slotted in—risking a break in the settled line-up? Who will don the finisher's role? Should selectors go with an extra spinning all-rounder or a third specialist seamer? Spinning Options Given UAE's slow pitches, spinners will play a crucial role. Axar Patel (vice-captain, improved batting), Varun Chakravarthy (mystery spinner), and Kuldeep Yadav (wrist spin threat) are near-certainties. The debate is whether to add Washington Sundar, a handy all-rounder who can bowl in the PowerPlay and bat as a floater. Head coach Gautam Gambhir is fond of Sundar, which may tilt the decision in his favour. Middle-Order and Finisher Role The middle order looks settled with Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. The finisher's role, however, is open. Rinku Singh struggled against England earlier this year (39 runs in 3 innings). Jitesh Sharma, who had a strong IPL for RCB, could be preferred as a wicketkeeper-finisher. Gambhir, however, may still back Rinku for another chance. There's also buzz about Shreyas Iyer's return to T20s after a superb IPL with Punjab Kings. His experience against spin and big-match temperament make him a strong candidate. Fast Bowling Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh are locks. The third pacer's slot will likely be between Prasidh Krishna (Purple Cap winner with 25 wickets) and Harshit Rana. Prasidh's packed schedule with upcoming Tests might push selectors to go with Rana to keep him fresh. Likely India Squad (15) Suryakumar Yadav (capt) Sanju Samson (wk) Abhishek Sharma Tilak Varma Hardik Pandya Shivam Dube Rinku Singh / Shreyas Iyer Axar Patel (vc) Varun Chakravarthy Kuldeep Yadav Washington Sundar / Ravi Bishnoi Jitesh Sharma (wk) / Dhruv Jurel (wk) Jasprit Bumrah Arshdeep Singh Harshit Rana / Prasidh Krishna
