Aston Villa targets young Spanish fullback from Barcelona
During Barcelona's summer pre-season tour of Asia, manager Hansi Flick has shifted his lineup to comply with La Liga's registration limits, which may leave a couple players, such as 19-year old fullback Hector Fort, searching for playing time elsewhere.
When FCB starting centerback Pau Cubarsi went down with an injury in the waning minutes of the club's friendly against Deagu FC, Fort was chosen to fill his spot in the lineup, though he's usually deployed as a proper fullback. In all, Fort accumulated just over 45 minutes of action during the pre-season, and he's at a crucial age where gaining on-field experience is of paramount importance.
This has led to the possibility of Fort leaving Barcelona on loan, and several major clubs have shown interest. As of late, however, Aston Villa of the English Premier League has extended overtures to the young Spanish defender in hopes of securing his transfer on a permanent deal.
According to Barcelona reporter Lucia Font, Villa have placed a 15 million Euro evaluation on the steady-passing fullback and will be progressing towards a transfer in the coming days.
With Barcelona's affinity for injecting youth into its lineup, Fort featured in 17 matches last season with five starts to his credit. During that time, Fort ranked as one of the most accurate defenders in all of La Liga, checking in at the 98th percentile for passes completed and passing accuracy per 90 minutes.
After Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Daegu FC on Aug. 4, Flick offered an encouraging message about Fort's development, though he did not indicate what the fullback's future would hold.
'I'm happy with what I saw from Hector Fort,' Flick told Football Espana. 'He trained well and played well the other day. Asia has been a very important part of the preseason for me, and there are ten more days left before we play against Mallorca.'

Making his way to the La Masia academy in Barcelona over a decade ago, Fort has long stood as a promising prospect within the FCB system, but an opportunity to play regular football in the Premier League could be a favorable proposition for the 19-year old defender.

Commanders-Patriots observations: Skirmishes, Bon Jovi and Washington's glaring problem
FOXBORO, Mass. — The Commanders' two-hour joint practice with the Patriots on Wednesday was both a tryout for players trying to land roster spots and a preseason game for the starters. The session, carefully planned to include ample 11-on-11 and red zone work, got chippy (twice) and left Patriots coach Mike Vrabel bloody. Advertisement 'You know how football is,' Commanders defensive end Deatrich Wise said. '(Vrabel) dove in there. He showed some tenacity. (It's like) he's still playing. The workout also provided the best measure yet of the state of the Commanders in their quest to exceed last season's 12-5 record and NFC Championship Game appearance. Here's what we saw and learned at Gillette Stadium: Both happened late in practice (the 12th of 15 periods) and involved the Commanders' defense and Patriots' offense during 11-on-11 red-zone drills. A Patriots running play up the middle caused tensions to boil over. Washington cornerback Marshon Lattimore was involved, but the skirmish quickly dispersed and play resumed. 'It's football. It is what it is,' Lattimore said afterward. 'It's a physical sport. So, if that's too physical for you, you shouldn't be playing football.' On the next play, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye found receiver Mack Hollins for a touchdown in the right corner of the end zone. The sides got into it again shortly after, with Patriots tight end Gee Scott jumping up from the pile fairly heated. Vrabel jumped in to break up players but emerged with a cut on the right side of his head. The Patriots weren't able to do much on the ground, which is exactly what Washington had hoped for when it beefed up its line with additions such as Javon Kinlaw and Eddie Goldman. Defensive tackle Daron Payne has also had a solid training camp, which continued into Wednesday. 'At the end of the season, I wasn't as healthy,' he said. 'But I'm feeling healthy and moving around good. Body's good, mind's good.' Washington's pass rush was effective, too. Lest there was any doubt, Von Miller can still do the things he could in his prime, bending under tackles and beating them with his quick first step. Maye completed a number of deep shots and found plenty of room in the middle of the field against the Commanders' defense. But Washington ended its penultimate series on a high note when linebacker Bobby Wagner tipped a pass up the middle and cornerback Mike Sainristil caught it for the interception. Cornerback Car'lin Vigers earlier had a pass breakup in the end zone. Advertisement Rookie cornerback Trey Amos has been a consistent bright spot in camp, and that continued against the Patriots. That, in and of itself, is notable given Washington's history; two years ago, the Commanders' joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens exposed rookie corner Emmanuel Forbes. 'He's got some great technique,' Lattimore said of Amos. 'Whoever taught him that, he's really showing it out here. He's working every day and he's a dog. I love to see that from a young corner, just coming in with his head on straight and showing what he can do.' With Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown both out, the Commanders' lack of receiving depth has been glaring in recent practices, especially so on Wednesday. Deebo Samuel, a versatile playmaker who can be a chess piece for offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, doesn't (and shouldn't) take on the workload expected of a leading wideout or even a No. 2 receiver. And so far, none of the Commanders' 10 other receivers has emerged as consistent playmakers or reliable pass-catcher capable of taking on more. Ja'Corey Brooks had an impressive one-handed catch early in practice, but the bulk of Daniels's completions were to Samuel, running back Austin Ekeler and tight end Zach Ertz. Take the offense's final series of practice, for instance: That's troubling given Brown's injury history; he missed the final four regular-season games and the playoffs last season because of a lacerated kidney, and has been limited in training camp because of a knee injury, which kept him home on Wednesday. The hope, of course, is that McLaurin signs — and soon. He doesn't have much leverage in his talks with the team, but its lack of starting-caliber wideouts and receiving depth have become increasingly favorable to McLaurin as he seeks a new deal. Advertisement McLaurin and guard Sam Cosmi, both of whom are on the physically unable to perform list, did not travel with the team to Foxboro. McLaurin is 'holding-in' because of his contentious contract negotiations with the team, and Cosmi is recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in the postseason. Five others are dealing with minor injuries and did not travel, either: Brown; backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is dealing with a 'lower leg strain,' according to Quinn; left guard Brandon Coleman; linebacker Jordan Magee and defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste. With Coleman out, Andrew Wylie filled in at left guard and Nick Allegretti moved to right guard. Rookie Josh Conerly Jr. started at right tackle. Quinn said the five injured players are not dealing with long-term issues. Mariota did not participate at all in Monday's practice in Ashburn, Va., and did not do any team drills last Saturday. Quinn said his level of concern is 'low' for Mariota and he anticipates having a better gauge of his health next week when the team returns from Foxboro. Brown suffered a knee injury during minicamp in June, and Quinn has stressed a thorough recovery so the receiver doesn't miss a step in the process and risk a setback. 'He's champing at the bit to go,' Quinn said. 'A little bit like Marcus, in this instance, early August, we're trying to really extend this ramp-up — the strength, the movements. The Commanders' preseason opener here on Friday will be the Josh Johnson-Sam Hartman show. Daniels and the starters are not expected to play. To maximize evaluations this week, Quinn essentially divided the team into three groups. The first units — on offense and defense — took the most reps in Wednesday's practice, making it essentially their first preseason game. Another group of players participated in some of the practice and will get some reps in Friday's game. The third group played sparingly in the joint practice and will get the majority of the reps in the game. Advertisement Daniels and the starters will presumably get the most preseason work in Week 2, when the Commanders host the Bengals at Northwest Stadium on Aug. 18. The third preseason game is typically reserved for players still vying for jobs as the starters begin to focus on the regular-season opener. Standing the sideline together between practice fields during the Commanders' and Patriots' workout: Jayson Tatum, Robert Kraft and Bon Jovi. — Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) August 6, 2025 Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who is recovering from an Achilles' injury, attended Wednesday practice. He spent much of the practice standing next to Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Jon Bon Jovi. At one point in between series, Tatum was spotted chatting up Daniels. Bon Jovi later talked up Maye and Hartman. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Mikel Arteta hopeful Kai Havertz, Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard will be available for Athletic Club game
Mikel Arteta is hopeful that Kai Havertz, Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard will be fit when Arsenal host Athletic Club on Saturday, August 9 'if everything goes to plan'. Havertz missed their 3-2 home defeat to Villarreal with a muscle issue. Calafiori felt a tweak in their 3-2 win over Newcastle United in Singapore, while Trossard picked up a groin issue in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong, with both players missing the Villarreal game. Advertisement On the trio, Arteta said: 'Yesterday in training he [Havertz] felt something and this morning he wasn't quite right, so we decided to rest him. I think it will be a matter of a couple of days. Hopefully by the weekend, if everything goes to plan, he will be fit. 'The three that we lost during the tour were Big Gabi (Magalhaes), Leo and Ricky. For Saturday I think they both [Trossard and Calafiori] have a chance if everything in the next few days evolves in the way they have already been.' In the Villarreal loss, Gabriel played his first minutes for Arsenal since April 1, when he suffered a hamstring injury that required surgery at the end of last season. He was joined by Jurrien Timber, who also got his first minutes of pre-season after suffering an ankle injury in May. New signing Viktor Gyokeres made his first start for the club, playing 63 minutes before Arteta made wholesale changes to his side. With Havertz absent, Mikel Merino finished the game up front. On Gyokeres, the Arsenal manager said: 'It was very important for him to start a match and start to have the feeling and the connection with the team. 'He's been with us only a week or so, but I already saw a lot of things and a lot of purpose, especially the way he was attacking in certain spaces. 'I think mentally, and understanding what he needs to do, it will be 100 per cent or more because he's so willing and so confident that he can deliver straight away. I have no doubt that he will be in a really good place.' Arteta's only other chance to give Gyokeres a start before the Premier League season begins will be against Athletic Club on Saturday, August 9. Then, Arsenal will be just over a week away from kicking off their campaign away to Manchester United on Sunday, August 17. () Spot the pattern. Chelsea Are Open To Launching A Move For This Barcelona Attacker: Good Fit For Maresca?
In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus claimed that Chelsea are open to launching a move for Barcelona attacker Fermin Lopez this summer. It has been mentioned that the Blues are willing to make a bid in the region of €60m for the Spanish talent this off-season. Lopez's Impressive Form In La Liga Lopez enjoyed a decent run of form at the Catalan club in the previous campaign when he put in a series of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The Spanish playmaker featured in 46 matches for Barcelona last season, finding the back of the net eight times and picking up ten assists across all fronts. The 22-year-old managed to shine at times on the offensive end of the field as he averaged 2.95 shots per 90 minutes in La Liga football. He kept 36.6% of his shots on target. Lopez was even careful when interchanging possession with his teammates after completing 81.8% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via Lopez is under contract at the Catalan club until the summer of 2029. Hence, Chelsea would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting him in this transfer window. (Photo by) Is Lopez A Good Fit For Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca? Lopez can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the vision to engineer a few promising chances for others around him in the opponent's half. He can make some driving runs with the ball in the final third. The Spaniard had added plenty of goals and assists to his game. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if Chelsea manage to bring him on board this off-season. Lopez would bring more quality and depth to Enzo Maresca's attack. He has what it takes to fight for regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge next season. At 22, Lopez has got the potential to be a future star in European football. Thus, he would be a great fit for the West London club's needs in the long run. All in all, Maresca should focus on getting a deal done for the talented playmaker soon.
