Zara Qairina's case: AGC orders further probe by cops, unclear if inquest or post-mortem needed
Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said the report was resubmitted yesterday along with specific instructions on several matters that still require investigation.
'We have provided certain instructions, meaning there are aspects that need to be further compiled. I cannot disclose the details at this stage as the investigation is still ongoing, but some matters need to be completed.
'I also cannot confirm at this point whether actions such as a post-mortem or inquest will be conducted to investigate the cause of the victim's death,' he told reporters after a special ceremony to celebrate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh's appointment as Chief Justice at the Putrajaya Palace of Justice here today.
Last Monday (August 5), the AGC announced that it had received the full preliminary investigation report on the case on Aug 4, a day after the report was submitted to its Sabah Branch office.
Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17.
She was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at around 4 am on July 16. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — A former wushu coach was yesterday sentenced to 13 years in prison and four strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here after being found guilty of committing physical sexual assault against a 10-year-old girl. Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar handed down the sentence after ruling that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the case against Gjeblehim Bong Teck Fuu, 34. 'The court imposes a sentence of 13 years' imprisonment from today, along with four strokes of the cane. The accused is also ordered to undergo counselling throughout the imprisonment period and placed under police supervision for three years after completing his sentence,' said the judge. The court then dismissed an application by defence counsel Tharamjit Singh for a stay of execution pending an appeal to the High Court. Bong was charged with committing the offence in his capacity as a person in a position of trust, as the victim's coach, at a premises in Taman Sri Sentosa, Jalan Klang Lama, about 7.30pm on April 13, 2022. He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act. Section 14(a) provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, while Section 16(1) carries a jail term of up to five years and not less than two strokes of the cane, upon conviction. In mitigation, defence counsel Tharamjit Singh urged the court to impose a lenient sentence, citing that the accused had to care for his elderly mother. However, deputy public prosecutor Nur Shakila Mohd Shariff pressed for a heavier sentence, arguing that the offence was serious and had caused lasting psychological trauma to the victim. 'The victim is a child in need of the highest level of legal protection. The accused exploited her vulnerability and trust. As her wushu coach, he was in a position of trust and should have acted as her protector and mentor. 'Instead, he abused that position for his gratification. We urge the court to impose a stiffer sentence to serve as a deterrent and clear warning to others,' she submitted. PETALING JAYA : A key prosecution witness in former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng's corruption trial will apply for official protection under the witness protection programme after he was attacked by 10 men yesterday. G Gnanaraja's lawyer RT Rajasekaran said a formal letter would be submitted to the police requesting protection pending a full investigation into the incident, Bernama reported. Rajasekaran said he was concerned that the assault might be linked to his client's role as a key prosecution witness in the ongoing corruption trial. 'We trust the police will conduct their investigation professionally, and we urge the public to refrain from speculation or drawing premature conclusions until the probe is completed,' he was quoted as saying. Yesterday, the New Straits Times reported that Gnanaraja suffered injuries to his face and hand after being attacked by 10 men at his home. The assailants were said to have tied up two security guards before entering his house. Separately, Gnanaraja appealed to the police for protection for his family, citing threats made during the 6.30am attack, which saw a group of masked individuals armed with machetes break into his home. 'One of them swung a machete towards my mouth and hand, while warning me not to speak out or 'play the hero'. They also fled with several personal belongings,' he said. Gnanaraja later sought treatment at a private hospital, and required five stitches to his left hand. Gnanaraja's wife, G Geethanjali, said she and her family are now living in fear following the incident and appealed for police protection. When asked about items that had been reported as missing, Geethanjali declined to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation. She also confirmed that she had just completed giving her statement to the authorities.
