President Xi Jinping on Friday said that a sound and stable China-Germany relationship will serve both countries' interests, and called on Berlin to clear the path for more two-way investment.
During a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Xi said both countries should expand cooperation in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology, according to Xinhua News Agency.
"The correct position of China-Germany and China-EU ties is as partners," Xi said, adding that "a stable and predictable policy environment is an important guarantor of bilateral cooperation".
He also told Merz that China "hopes the German side will provide more policy support and facilitation for bilateral investment cooperation, as well as a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises".
Both leaders emphasised the importance of economic relations between Germany and China, according to a statement from Merz's office.
Merz, who took office earlier this month, also told Xi about "the common efforts of Europe and the EU to bring about a quick ceasefire in Ukraine" and that he urged China to "support these efforts", according to the statement. (Additional reporting by AFP)

Hang Seng Index ends day on a weak note
Hang Seng Index ends day on a weak note The Hang Seng Index ended trading for the day down 114 points at 23,792. File photo: AFP Hong Kong and mainland Chinese stocks ended slightly lower on Friday, as investors remained cautious after a call between President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, failed to provide clear signals of progress in easing trade tensions. Trump and Xi confronted weeks of brewing trade tensions and a battle over critical minerals in a rare leader-to-leader call on Thursday, leaving key issues unresolved for future talks. "If you look at the conversation between the Chinese and US presidents, there's nothing concrete that's positive. So little impact on stocks," said Guo Jianwen, partner at Shanghai-based hedge fund Haiyi Capital. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index ended trading for the day down 114.43 points, or 0.48 percent, at 23,792.54. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 0.63 percent to end at 8,629.75 while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 0.63 percent to end at 5,286.52. Across the border, the blue-chip CSI300 Index fell 0.1 percent. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended up 0.04 percent at 3,385.36, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.19 percent lower at 10,183.70. The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.45 percent to close at 2,039.43. For the holiday-shortened week, the CSI 300 Index gained nearly 1 percent, while the Hang Seng Index rose 2.2 percent. (Agencies)

Caught in a bad bromance: Trump and Musk go for the throat as shocking feud escalates
Hours after US President Donald Trump spoke with his Chinese counterpart on Thursday night and shared optimistic remarks about the call on social media, a public feud escalated between him and his biggest political donor. Advertisement Elon Musk, once Trump's most high-profile donor and self-proclaimed 'first buddy', lambasted the 'big beautiful bill' earlier this week – one of Trump's key domestic policy initiatives that was recently passed by the House – lighting the fuse on a public fight that quickly spiralled into a fiery exchange of accusations. In this explainer, the Post takes a closer look at Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act – examining a specific clause that fuelled the fallout, how the two sides turned on each other, and the economic ripples that have followed. How did the feud start? Musk called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act a 'disgusting abomination' in a social media post on his own website, X, saying it was a 'massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill'. 'It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,' added Musk, who was at the helm of the US' cost-saving-focused Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) until last week. This was the second time Musk publicly lashed out at the bill. In late May, before officially leaving the Doge, he said he was 'disappointed' by the bill and believed the legislation 'increases the budget deficit' and 'undermines the work that the Doge team is doing'. Advertisement In response, Trump suggested that Musk was upset about the removal of mandates for electric vehicles (EVs), which could affect his Tesla business, while the president was speaking to reporters during a news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday.
