Michael van Gerwen PULLS OUT of tournament and risks falling out of top 100 in competition rankings - as friend gives worrying update

Daily Mail14-05-2025
Michael van Gerwen pulled out of the Players Championship 16 due to a crisis of self-belief, a friend says.
The Dutchman ruled himself out of Tuesday's action in Hildesheim, Germany, which saw Ross Smith secure his sixth PDC ranking title.
Van Gerwen, 36, has lost in the first round of a competition six times on this year's ProTour and apparently didn't feel up to it on this occasion.
One of those shock defeats was in the Players Championship 15 on Monday, and he has now dropped to 96th in the competition's Order of Merit.
At the end of the season (which includes 34 floor tournaments), the top 64 will qualify for the Players Championship Finals in Minehead.
Van Gerwen risks missing out and his compatriot Vincent van der Voort has given a concerning update on his confidence.
'When I see how things are going, the belief just isn't there,' Van der Voort told the Darts Draait Door podcast.
'His presence is lacking, there's no aggression or passion in his game.
'It's just about throwing at the board and hoping for the best.'
The Green Machine's slump in form means he could also miss out on the Premier League Darts finals night.
He sits fourth in the rankings, one point and one place ahead of Nathan Aspinall, who will be desperate to take his spot with just two nights of the regular season left.
Van Gerwen has only made it to the final of two out of 14 Premier League nights this season and was knocked out at the first time of asking by Luke Humphries in the most recent event in Leeds.
He has also been told by Van der Voort that he is taking too many holidays.
The Dutch star is ditching next month's World Cup of Darts in favour of a trip to Ibiza. Earlier this year, the seven-time Premier League darts winner suffered with health problems for two months after picking up an illness while on holiday in Thailand.
Van der Voort told the Darts Draait Door podcast: 'Sometimes he plays really well, but then he can't keep it up. He's going to have to train hard.
'He needs to put in the effort or he'll never find consistent form again.
'You can't just take a holiday and expect things to fall back into place. It doesn't work like that.'

FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemns 'unacceptable' racism after incidents at German Cup games

FIFA President Gianni Infantino says that two incidents of alleged racist abuse which marred German Cup games are 'unacceptable' as German police investigate. Infantino's comments came a day after Schalke 's Christopher Antwi-Adjei said he was subjected to racist abuse in a cup game at Lokomotive Leipzig. He was whistled by fans throughout the match after reporting the incident to officials. In another incident, a Kaiserslautern substitute was racially abused while warming up in a game at RSV Eintracht, the team's coach said. He didn't name the player affected. Both incidents occurred as lower-league clubs from the former East Germany hosted larger teams in first-round games. 'It is unacceptable that incidents have occurred at two DFB-Pokal matches in Germany," Infantino wrote on social media, using the German name for the competition. 'Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination.' Infantino said FIFA's Players' Voice Panel would be 'in touch' with the German soccer federation. 'Everyone at FIFA, The Players' Voice Panel and the whole football community stands firmly with all those impacted by these events — we are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected, and that competition organizers and law enforcement authorities take appropriate action," Infantino added. Antwi-Adjei filed a complaint about the incident at Lokomotive Leipzig and police were investigating, Schalke said late Sunday. At RSV Eintracht, fans and security quickly identified the alleged perpetrator and fans of both teams chanted 'Nazis out,' German agency dpa reported. The German soccer federation's president, Bernd Neuendorf, said it had already launched its own investigations into the two games. 'Racism and discrimination, hatred and exclusion have no place in football. We stand for diversity and respect. And alongside those affected and with those who stand up for our values,' Neuendorf said in a statement. The incidents in Germany came two days after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported that he was racially abused by a spectator while playing at Liverpool. The game was briefly paused as the referee spoke to the coaches and captains of both teams. Police said Saturday that a 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense. He was released on conditional bail Monday, police said, with a stipulation that he cannot attend soccer games in Britain. Infantino has said FIFA's Players' Voice Panel would contact Semenyo. ___

Sad story of the ‘Mario Balotelli of darts' who had run-ins with the law and lost tour card when he couldn't get a visa

IN the years before Luke Littler burst onto the scene, Corey Cadby was the young star tipped to be a future champion. The Australian had the world at his feet after beating legend Phil Taylor at the age of 21 in 2016. 3 3 But troubles away from the oche ruined his career and he has been compared to footballer Mario Balotelli. The former Manchester City and Liverpool striker was a maverick, capable of going from sheer brilliance to utter madness. Throwing darts at a youth-team player, letting off a firework in his house the day before scoring against Manchester United and being labelled "unmanageable" by Jose Mourinho, Balotelli was never far away from the headlines. Despite winning the Premier League with City and Serie A with Inter Milan, there will always be a feeling that Super Mario never met his potential due to off-field troubles. And the same can be said about Cadby. Nicknamed "The King", he announced himself to fans by beating Taylor and then becoming world youth champion nine years ago. A run to the UK Open final and a win over Rob Cross followed. But run-ins with the law saw him disappear from the darts scene by 2020. There were visa problems over him travelling to Europe for major events as Cadby reportedly had a criminal record. An arrest warrant was even put out after he missed a court appearance after an alleged driving offence. The Darts Draait Door Podcast reflected on his career, with host Damian Vlottes seeing a similarity between him and Balotelli. Vlottes said: "That one has everything but brains. I feel the same about Cadby. Former pro Vincent van der Voort added: "Such a shame. He had everything to become a world-class player. "He had character and wasn't afraid of the big stage. "I really thought he was a very good player. "It's a real shame he ended up sabotaging himself. "He had multiple run-ins with the law and personal troubles in Australia that prevented him from entering England." Cadby once refused to play in a World Series of Darts tournament. Opening up in an old interview last year, he said: 'It is a disgrace, especially when I've been asked to go and represent the PDC. "I did let a lot of people down at the end and I'm totally ashamed of that. 'Each day was so hard and that obviously led to alcohol. I was never one bit happy, I was actually depressed every day. I didn't want to wake up and to be honest, there was thoughts of suicide on my mind.' Cadby made a brief comeback in 2023 and won back his tour card at Q-school. But he never participated in a PDC event and his card was eventually removed. As for Balotelli, he is currently a free agent after recent spells at Turkish side Adana Demirspor and Italian club Genoa. 3

Chelsea reject Bayern Munich loan bid for Christopher Nkunku

Bayern Munich have failed with an approach to sign Christopher Nkunku on loan as Chelsea insist on a permanent sale. Further talks took place between Chelsea and Bayern over the weekend about the 27-year-old, who is at present not in the west London club's plans for the season. Chelsea remain clear in their stance that Nkunku can only leave on a permanent basis, while Bayern were seeking to find a formula whereby they could sign Nkunku on an initial loan. Chelsea need more sales if they are to progress with their interest in the RB Leipzig forward Xavi Simons, as well as the Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho. Inter Milan are also thought to be interested in Nkunku while RB Leipzig previously considered an approach, but it is understood that the France international had no interest in a return to his former club, who did not qualify for the Champions League this season. Inter would also need to offer a permanent deal. Bayern remain interested in Nkunku, as they are keen to reinforce their attack after selling Kingsley Coman to Al-Nassr on Friday. However at this stage, unless there is a change in position, a deal is not likely to progress. Nkunku and Chelsea will continue to explore their options during this transfer window, and it is now expected that any deal may go down to the wire. However, the prospect of Nkunku staying at Stamford Bridge has not been ruled out. Nkunku still has four years remaining on his contract, which he signed in the summer of 2023 after completing a £52million transfer from RB Leipzig. Nkunku's first season at Chelsea was hampered by injury and he struggled to nail down a permanent spot in the team under Enzo Maresca last season. He featured prominently at the Club World Cup, however, but delayed his return to pre-season last week due to a small injury issue. Jadon Sancho's proposed move to Roma has stalled after he rejected their contract offer, saying he wants to consider his options. The Italian club offered about £17million to Manchester United, who prefer to sell the winger. Sancho has a year left on his contract, worth at least £250,000 a week, although United have an option to extend it by a season until 2027. Roma have also made an approach about Leon Bailey of Aston Villa. Roma could turn to Fulham's Emile Smith Rowe as a potential alternative. The former Arsenal player, 25, lost his place in the Fulham team towards the end of last season and only came on in the 77th minute of their draw against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. Nottingham Forest have spent nearly £100million in the past three days after Arnaud Kalimuendo followed Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee in joining the club. Kalimuendo, 23, arrives in a deal worth about £25million from Rennes, for whom the striker scored 18 league goals last season. Hutchinson signed from Ipswich Town for a club-record £37.5million and McAtee signed from Manchester City for £30million. Forest are also in talks to sign Douglas Luiz on loan with the option to buy him for £26million. The midfielder scored nine goals to help Aston Villa qualify for the Champions League in 2024 before moving to Juventus for £42.5million. The Brazil midfielder was restricted to 19 league and six Champions League appearances last season in part due to injury.
