Mrs Mops talks conquering the Hyrox fitness challenge and maintaining her BBL

News2429-07-2025
Mpumi 'Mrs Mops' Mophatlane trained for three months for the Cape Town Hyrox event.
She is planning on entering the Johannesburg event at the end of 2025.
Mpumi says she maintains her BBL through consistent gym sessions.

'I never say no to a challenge,' she says.
It took three months of training but reality TV star Mpumi 'Mrs Mops' Mophatlane has conquered the Hyrox global fitness movement.
The intense indoor fitness competition held its first South African events in Johannesburg in March 2025 and in Cape Town in July, drawing in hundreds of participants to compete in a series of running and workouts in one of the world's fastest growing fitness challenges.
Mpumi efforts prove that anyone can overcome what they set their mind to.
Mpumi admits to TRUELOVE, 'It was a tough journey because I am not as fit. I've never thought of myself as a hybrid athlete.
'And so when my friend, who's also my personal trainer, said to me, 'Listen, in about three months time, there's going to be the Hyrox Cape Town'. And I'm like, 'Okay, so first of all, what is Hyrox? Number one. And what do they require?' And then when she sent me the pictures and the videos, I was like, there's no way.'

But through hard work, determination and motivation, Mrs Mops completed the intense challenge in just under two hours.
The Mommy Club star tells us all about how she trained for the challenge, kept herself going and how she maintains her sculpted physique since undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure.
Tell us about your training schedule preparing for the Hyrox fitness challenge.
'Being so busy, it was so difficult. So, what we did is we decided let's train twice a week with the Hyrox trainer, and, because Hyrox is mostly running and I needed to get my pace up because I'm not a runner. Like I can't run to save my life.
'And when we got there, he tested us and he said to me, 'Mm, Mpumi, you are not runner girl. You're in trouble. You need to start increasing your pace and just start running'. And we started running on Sundays and started running on Mondays and Wednesdays as well to get my pace right. And the types of exercises there are, it's skiing, it's rowing, it's ball throws, it's the farmers carry. Yoh, it's lunges and burpees, which humbled me. Burpees humble me, I almost fainted when I was doing the burpees!
What kept you motivated to be consistent with your training?
'What kept me going was my children and my family because I had committed and with my big mouth, I had told everybody. So, everybody now was asking me, 'Hey, how's the Hyrox going? How's the training going?' Now I can't back down because I had already said to people, 'I'm training for the Hyrox'.
'Every time they're like, 'Mpumi, have a glass of wine', I'm like, 'No thanks, I'm training for the Hyrox'. So, I had committed myself to such a level that I couldn't back down.'
Would you commit to this level of working out in your everyday life?
'Oh, yes, absolutely. Now that I'm fit and I'm Hyrox fit and I know what to expect. When another one comes in Johannesburg, I think there's one coming in Johannesburg again at the end of the year, I will definitely enter that one.'

What kind of lifestyle changes did you have to make to maintain your BBL?
'It's so important that if you do decide to get a BBL like I did, you have to go to the gym and maintain it. And it comes with consistency and a change of diet because it's going to be massive if you keep on eating all these unhealthy foods.
'So you have to just eat healthy. And, I mean, you can cheat here and there and have a cheat day, that's fine. But most of the time you just need to watch it. Watch your weight and everything else in between. Because I've had friends who've gone for round one, round two, round three BBLs because they don't like going to the gym. And so, mina, it's just one round and I'm done. and I'm going to maintain these results, honey, by being a gym bunny.'
How has your body changed a year on after your BBL?
'The results get better. Because as soon as you get up from that operating table, you look extremely exaggerated because you're swollen. And as time goes by and you're getting your massages - because it's really important to also get your massages.
'What people don't understand is that after you get your BBL and your lipo, you need lymphatic drainage massage to get all those fluids out from the swelling. And when you get your massages and you compress and you sleep with your compression garment and you're doing all those aftercare procedures, after a few months, you can tell that your body is getting better and better.'

World record: 1 100 marimba players unite in Cape Town for largest ensemble

'It's impossible to feel sad when you play marimba.' Coordinator Kiara Ramklass said this was the joy that more than 1 100 young musicians set out to capture when they broke the Guinness World Record for the largest marimba ensemble. Ramklass added that the 1 177 young musicians from across South Africa and Zimbabwe came together in Cape Town to break the record after two years of planning. An official adjudicator from Guinness oversaw the event. Ramklass said every participating child would receive an official gold medal from Guinness World Records. 'It was really an amazing moment of unity for us to come together on Saturday and break this world record. The theme of the evening was 'united in harmony', and I think that spoke to the greater cause behind this world record. 'The marimba is present in almost every part of society, so we all came together to play this beautiful instrument, transcending socioeconomic barriers. I think it was just palpable, that feeling of unity and ubuntu,' she added. Ramklass described the marimba as a 'community instrument' that united people. 'You need the bass player, the tenor player, and the soprano player to make a full sound. The marimba is a community builder, and it was really beautiful for us to bring together the marimba community to achieve this beautiful record altogether.' Ramklass fell in love with the marimba at the age of 12. 'I also learned other musical instruments at school, like the flute and trombone. But the marimba was just this one instrument that I really just loved. Every Tuesday afternoon, I would wait for my marimba lesson,' she said. Ramklass continued: The marimba has got such a beautiful, warm sound that just makes me feel at peace, at ease. Just the way that you play this instrument, the physicality involved, is a way to de-stress. It was more than just an instrument; it was like I was a part of home. Inspired to share her love of marimba, Ramklass started Marimba Jam in 2012 as a Grade 11 pupil wanting to make an active change to address the inequality in music education in her community. Marimba Jam provides access to the psychological and social benefits that accompany the joy of playing in a marimba band. The project initially consisted of a week-long marimba workshop during the school holidays with 10 girls from Zimasa Secondary School in Langa, Cape Town, an under-resourced school. However, a decade later, Marimba Jams employed more than 20 part-time student teachers, who teach 500 pupils from 13 schools across the Western Cape. 'It was a small community project to share this love of marimba. And I then started teaching marimba bands at the university. It grew into a social enterprise, where we now teach over 500 learners weekly. We have a branch in Johannesburg now. And when our learners matriculate, they join what we call the Marimba Jam Academy, and now we train as professional teachers and marimba players in the industry,' Ramklass said. Supplied/ Marimba Jam She added that the marimba was an accessible instrument, because players did not need to know how to read music to play it. 'For many of the children we teach, it's their only way of experiencing the benefits of learning musical instruments at school. That includes learning teamwork and confidence, and cognitive development. In some communities, there are not many opportunities for these kids. Marimba gives them something to focus on, so they are not drawn into negative spaces. The broader impact is huge.'

A couple went to Africa on their 5th date. Now they're engaged, and the bride-to-be has a custom ring that nods to that trip.

Natasha Gabbayan, 29, and Josh Banayan, 36, have been together since 2023. Banayan recently proposed at their first-date spot with a standout engagement ring he designed. The ring nods to a trip the couple took to Africa and their relationship overall. California natives Natasha Gabbayan and Josh Banayan weren't completely sold on each other after their first four dates. Still, they had a connection. So Banayan did what anyone in his position would: he asked Gabbayan to travel with him to Cape Town for the wedding of a childhood friend. She said yes. "We fell in love in Africa," Banayan, a business owner, told Business Insider. "It was a crazy, five-day experience." They danced, got to know each other, and even went on a safari in Namibia. "It was funny because there were four other couples on that safari with us," he said. "Three were celebrating their honeymoon, one of them was proposing there, and then it was us. We were like, 'Yeah, we kind of just met.'" They've been together since that 2023 trip and are now celebrating their own engagement. Gabbayan's standout ring even has a special tie to that early trip overseas. Playing the long game Banayan, 36, made a plan earlier this year to ensure Gabbayan, 29, would never suspect he was about to propose. Four months in advance, he scheduled a weekly dinner reservation at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood, where they had their first date. "We called it Tower Tuesdays," he said. "I'd call her an Uber, and I'd already be there. We'd get drinks and treat it like our first date." Gabbayan describes her partner as a "big planner," so she never considered that the recurring dates might be a ruse. When she arrived one Tuesday in June and was led to a suite, however, she knew something was up. "My heart started racing and I kind of blacked out a little from excitement," she said. A violinist performed Gabbayan's favorite songs as she walked in, and Banayan launched into "a five-minute speech." Though she doesn't remember it, Gabbayan knows she said yes when he asked her to marry him. They spent the rest of their night having a private dinner in their suite, enjoying the same dishes they had on their first date, like pigs in a blanket. The couple also wore matching pajamas, filmed family videos on Banayan's childhood camcorder, and signed a bottle of Blue Label scotch, which they hope will be the first drink they share with their future children. A one-of-a-kind ring to match a special love story Banayan told nearly no one that he was going to propose. He called his parents that morning and asked Gabbayan's father for permission to marry her two hours before their scheduled date. He also didn't seek help when designing his bride-to-be's engagement ring. "I have this philosophy that a man, if he's asking a woman to marry him, should know exactly what ring she wants," Banayan said. "He shouldn't have to take hints or have the girl tell him." "Marriage and relationships are all about listening, especially as a man," he added. "Just listen to the woman, and you should know." Gabbayan, who owns a vintage clothing brand, admitted to being "so nervous" about giving up creative control. "I want to say I had faith, but I didn't have that much faith," she said. But Banayan did his research. For months, he monitored Gabbayan's personal style and the jewelry accounts she follows on Instagram. His final design included two attached gold bands — representing the couple being a team — with their birthstones, a ruby and an aquamarine, hidden inside the ring's band. A vintage-inspired cushion-cut diamond sits on top. "When I'm looking at her rock, her birthstone on the bottom is facing me because she always comes first," Banayan said. "And when she's looking at her ring, my stone is facing her because I always come first to her." The ring was also crafted by Banayan's childhood friend, who now works in the diamond industry — the same friend who got married in Africa and brought the couple together. "It's really who I am and exactly what I like," Gabbayan said of her ring. "He really hit it right on the nail, without me even realizing that's something that I would've wanted. I couldn't have described it better if I wanted to." With a ring on her hand and a wedding to plan, Gabbayan said she's woken up every day since her proposal with a smile on her face. "I know that I'll look at this ring 50 years from now and remember that he spent four months designing and picking out every detail," she said. "I can buy myself a ton of jewelry, but an engagement ring is supposed to be sentimental and remind you of your person." All that's left for the couple to do now is get married.
