
Woman killed, 13 injured in Lahad Datu crash

LAHAD DATU: A woman was killed while 13 others were injured after their four-wheel-drive skidded and plunged into a 15-meter deep ditch at Ladang Permai, here, Wednesday. The State Fire and Rescue Department said it received a distress call following the incident at 5.53am.
Advertisement A team of Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the scene and arrived at 6.08am. Upon arrival, the team reported that a Toyota Hilux had plunged into a ditch. 'Fifteen people comprising seven men, a boy and seven women were involved and taken out by members of the public before the Fire and Rescue team arrived,' said the department. The team assisted in lifting the victims up to the road. A 33-year-old woman was confirmed dead by Ministry of Health personnel and her body was handed over to the police for further action. The department said 13 other victims who were injured, as well as the driver, were taken to the hospital in ambulances for further treatment. The operation ended at 8.53am after no other dangers were detected at the scene. Disabled baker scammed of over RM500k in fake Tiktok job offer
GEORGE TOWN: A disabled baker in Penang has lost more than RM500,000 after falling for a bogus job offer advertised on TikTok, according to acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the incident began in early December last year when the 45-year-old man was first contacted via WhatsApp in early December last year by a woman who claimed to offer a lucrative job selling children's toys through the platform. The victim proceeded to make 41 cash deposit transactions amounting to RM523,350 into five different bank accounts between Dec 18, 2024, and July 14 this year. Despite repeated payments, the promised returns never materialised, and the suspect continued requesting additional funds under the guise of job-related expenses. The victim lodged a report on Friday (July 18) at the Timur Laut district police headquarters (IPD) upon realising he had been scammed, with the case being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama
