Hosts underdogs going into USSA squash championship

The Herald27-06-2025
Madibaz's squash elite are present and correct for their biggest test of the year when they take on their peers at the University Sports SA tournament in Gqeberha from Sunday.
The event, which takes place at Crusaders Squash Club, will welcome more than 100 student-athletes and officials from across the country for a week of high-octane competition in individual and team formats.
The last time Mandela University hosted the competition, in 2018, the Gqeberha team finished runners-up to UJ.
Coach Jason le Roux said even though they might have less depth than back then, a top-five finish remained their goal.
He expected it to be tough going against defending champions UP-Tuks and NWU.
'But it is an excellent opportunity for the players to test themselves,' he said.
Even so, with Zunaid Lewis coming in to provide stability at No 3, he said there was already a noticeable improvement within their ranks.
'The guys have worked incredibly hard and we're hoping that extra year of experience will count in our favour,' Le Roux said of his charges, who will no doubt enjoy underdog status.
Mike Donaldson, at No 1, will lead the men's squad with Luke Muller, Lewis, Stewart Frieslaar and Adrian Mitchell playing the supporting roles.
Donaldson, originally from East London but now one of Eastern Province's top players, will be key to the team's fortunes even though he will face stiff competition at the top of the order.
The late withdrawal of Nicole Heuer from the women's side due to unforeseen circumstances is a blow. This means the team remain unchanged from 2024.
Despite this setback, Le Roux remained upbeat.
'The experience they gained last year means they know what to expect. They've prepared well and are ready.'
Tanith Moreton, Savannah Barron, Bianca Lansdown and Michaela Hill make up the women's contingent.
Looking at the tournament as a whole, Le Roux predicted a fierce battle between UP-Tuks and NWU for team honours.
'Much will depend on how those squads have developed since last year.
'Tuks had a young team who won the title, so you'd expect them to be even stronger.'
Though North West might not have made a forward step as significant as the team from Pretoria over the past 12 months, he said they were always tough to beat.
'Then you have teams like UJ and Maties. They'll be in the mix, depending on their consistency throughout the week.'
New individual champions are guaranteed as 2024 titlists Tristen Worth and Helena Hudson are not in the field.
NWU's Gareth Craigen tops the men's seedings, while 2024 runner-up Lara Patrick of UP-Tuks heads the women's draw.
Individual competition is from Sunday to Tuesday with the team event following from Wednesday to next Friday. — Full Stop Communications

Gallants shock Pirates with a late winner in Bloemfontein as Ouaddou's drastic changes continue to backfire

Orlando Pirates' start to the Betway Premiership suffered another huge blow when they lost a second successive match, this time suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Marumo Gallants at a bouncing Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. The loss means Bucs have already given away six points in two league matches under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who continues to chop and change his starting XI. 'We're going to analyse to see what's going wrong, especially in the second half. The changes that we made didn't give us what we expected,' a disappointed Ouaddou said after the match. A goal in referee's optional time by late substitute Jaisen Clifford gave Gallants all three points and took the Free State-based club to the top of the Premiership. It was their second victory in a row after they won their opening match 2-1 against Richards Bay away last Saturday. Pirates dominated the early exchanges and were duly rewarded in the 16th minute when left back Deon Hotto was given enough space to find Patrick Maswanganyi inside the area to tap in the opener. Just before Gallants got their equaliser Pirates were unlucky not to have been awarded a spot kick after Oswin Appollis was fouled inside the area by Siyabonga Nhlapo. A few minutes before that Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi had denied both Appollis and Boitumelo Radiopane when he made two point-blank saves. Gallants did well to compose themselves and found an equaliser on the stroke of halftime. It was a team goal as Gallants rotated the ball around the Pirates defence before it reached Daniel Msendami, who made no mistake with a deft finish inside the area. Ouaddou continued to leave last season regulars like Thalente Mbatha, Deano van Rooyen and striker Tshegofatso Mabasa out of his match-day squad. Added to that list in this match was Bucs skipper Nkosinathi Sibisi, whose place was taken by 23-year-old centre back Lebone Seema. Seema was partnered with 19-year-old Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who stood in as captain in the absence of Sibisi. Playing this match with one eye on Saturday's blockbuster first leg of the MTN8 semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns in Orlando, Ouaddou also placed Relebohile Mofokeng and Sipho Mbule on the bench and handed starting berths to Tshepang Moremi and Abdoulaye Mariko. With so many changes, there was limited coherence in Bucs' play as many of these players are yet to fully know each other. As Gallants saw little of the ball, they looked to catch their visitors on the break and continued to try that trick in the second half until Clifford found the winner in the third added minute. Mofokeng and striker Evidence Makgopa were eventually introduced for Moremi and Radiopane early in the second half while former Chippa United player Sinoxolo Kwayiba came on for Mariko to make his debut with 20 minutes remaining on the clock. Try as Pirates did to get the winner, their combinations were simply not having the desired effect as their final ball was poor if not easily defended by Gallants, who looked happy to add a point to the three before they got a bonus with Clifford thumping in the late winner. Having already lost six points in two opening league matches, Ouaddou will go to Saturday's game against Sundowns under huge pressure to get back to winning ways. Anything less than a win in that match will further infuriate some of the Bucs supporters who left Orlando disappointed last Saturday when they opened the league campaign with a 1-0 loss against Sekhukhune United.

Nelson Mandela Bay Boxing grooming international stars

'Instead of rushing our boxers to turn pro, we decided to keep them in open boxing [formerly known as amateur] to groom them to greater heights,' Vumazonke said. He said there was notable success and staying power in boxers who were groomed and competed in Olympic-style boxing. He mentioned the likes of Masibulele 'Hawk' Makepula, Jeffery Mathebula, Bongani Mwelase, Jackson Chauke and recently JJ Sonjica, who spent time as amateurs competing at a high level and eventually won national and international titles when they turned professional. 'Internationally, great amateurs like Vasily Lomachenko, the Ukrainian IBF and IBO lightweight titlist and multiple middleweight champion of the world, Gennady 'Triple G' Golovkin of Kazakhstan, became world beaters at the professional level.' According to Vumazonke, in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, professional boxers were allowed to compete and many unfortunately did not make it to the semifinals and finals. That said much about how the Olympic-style boxing countries of the world were pushing, he said. Vumazonke said Lusizi, Soga and Magwa might be discarding their vests. Nelson Mandela Bay is grooming 18-year-old Oyisa Wanga, from KwaNobuhle in Kariega. Wanga won a gold medal in the 2025 Africa Youth Games held in Namibia. The Herald
