Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 hands-on
Samsung made its big foldable thinner and lighter, gave it a serious camera system (for a foldable anyway), and most importantly, made it usable while closed. Let's get into the details!
The Galaxy Z Fold7 is the company's thinnest and lightest Fold yet. At just 8.9mm when folded, it's 26% thinner than the 12.1mm Fold6. Even more impressive, at just 215g, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is 24g lighter than its predecessor, and is even lighter than the 218g Galaxy S25 Ultra. At only 0.7mm thicker when folded, the Z Fold7 isn't far off the S25 Ultra in girth too.
Samsung also finally gave its Fold a serious camera system. Gone is the under-display selfie camera, replaced by a regular 10MP sensor. On the back, the main camera is the same 200MP unit in the Galaxy S25 Ultra and S25 Edge, while the 12MP ultrawide has autofocus and macro capability. The biggest upgrades, and quite literally, are the displays. The cover screen has grown by 0.2-inch to 6.5-inch and is now wider, with a regular 21:9 aspect ratio (vs 22.1:9 on the old phone) so it no longer feels like you're using a Hershey Bar phone. The Dynamic AMOLED 2X has all the bells and whistles you'd expect - an LTPO 1-120Hz refresh rate and mighty brightness. The folding screen is also bigger at 8.0-inch.
Bigger displays, finally!
These diagonals put the Galaxy Z Fold7 in line with high-end rivals such as the vivo X Fold5 and Honor Magic V5 - something Galaxy faithfuls have been demanding for years now. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7
Moving to the Galaxy Z Flip7. Like the Fold, the new Flip made displays the priority. Both the cover and the inner screen grew compared to the Galaxy Z Flip6. The cover screen is the biggest upgrade - at 4.1 inches, it is bigger even than the one in the Moto Razr 60 Ultra. It's a major jump up from the 3.4-inch unit on the Z Flip6. But even more so than size, the screen is now 120Hz and bright at 2,600 nits. Inside, the screen has grown to 6.9 inches - the biggest on a Z Flip device ever.
Continuing that thread, this is the thinnest Galaxy Z Flip ever. At 13.7mm when folded, the new Flip is 1.2mm thinner than its predecessor. When you unfold the Z Flip7, it's 0.4mm thinner at 6.5mm. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 specs at a glance: Body: 166.7x75.2x6.5mm, 188g; Plastic front (unfolded), glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus 2), aluminum frame; IP48 dust and water resistant (dust > 1mm; immersible up to 1.5m for 30 min), Armor aluminum frame.

What Samsung didn't change on the Z Flip7 are the cameras. Aside from advancements such as the ProVisual Engine, Enhanced Nightography, and 10-bit HDR video, the sensor hardware seems the same as on the Galaxy Z Flip6.
Speaking of, Samsung added a one-more-thing in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE - the first 'Fan Edition' model in its Z lineup.
The Z Flip7 FE has a 3.4-inch 60Hz cover screen, a 6.7-inch 120Hz cover screen, a 50MP wide + 12MP ultrawide + 10MP selfie camera system, and a 4,000mAh battery with 25W charging. If those specs sound identical to the Galaxy Z Flip6's, they are.
The difference between the Z Flip6 and Z Flip7 FE is the chipset - the new phone swaps the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for an Exynos 2400, which is more of a side-grade rather than an upgrade, on paper at least.
Let's explore the hardware in more tangible detail, shall we?

Apple escapes Trump's 100% tariff on chips
The president added that companies that announce their intentions to invest in domestic manufacturing will be exempted from paying the chip tariff. However, there will be a separate import tax placed on devices that contain semiconductors, such as smartphones, automobiles, and tablets that are shipped into the U.S. Chip manufacturers that have made huge investments in the U.S. appear to be exempted as well. Taiwan's National Development Council Minister, Liu Chin-ching, said today that TSMC will be exempted from the 100% tariff on chips. Cook was alongside Trump when he announced the new chip tariffs. | Image credit-Apple Yeo Han-koo, South Korea's Trade Minister, stated that chips imported into the by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also will not be hit by the 100% U.S. chips tariff. Both of those firms have announced plans to invest in the U.S. Interestingly, Trump said that Cook was not told in advance of the announcement in the Oval Office about his plan to impose a 100% chip tariff. The president did say that Apple's investments should be seen by other companies as an example of how they can avoid getting hit by the import tax on chips. Apple plans on investing some of the $100 billion it pledged to spend on a new U.S. manufacturing program that will include a Kentucky-based factory run by Corning to produce glass for future iPhone models. Corning has been a glass supplier for the iPhone since the very first model was released in 2007. Apple had previously said it would spend $500 billion to improve its domestic manufacturing facilities. Some of that money will be spent on a new factory in Houston to build servers, a Michigan-based supplier academy, and additional facilities for suppliers in the States. None of these investments results in Apple building the iPhone in the U.S., which is exactly what Trump wants. However, the president seemed to be happy with Apple's promises. The president said this about Tim Cook : "Look, he's not making this kind of an investment anywhere in the world, not even close. He's coming back. I mean, Apple's coming back to America." Currently, most of the new iPhone models sold in the U.S. are assembled in India. However, Trump recently doubled the tariffs on imports from that country to 50% from the previous 25%. Even if Apple wanted to produce the iPhone in the U.S., it would take years to build the factories needed to have the device assembled in the United States. Apple would have to train workers willing to take low-paying assembly jobs. The hardest and most important task of all would be assembling a supply chain close to the U.S. that would be able to deliver the supplies Apple needs to build the iPhone in the U.S. in the quantities and with the quality that Apple demands. As part of its $600 billion investment in the U.S., Apple will work with Samsung's Austin fab on an innovative new way to manufacture chips that has never been used anywhere in the world. Apple says, "By bringing this technology to the U.S. first, this facility will supply chips that optimize power and performance of Apple products, including iPhone devices shipped all over the world." In addition, Apple plans on buying chips from Samsung produced from one of the latter's Texas fabs.

Samsung adds Voice Phishing detection in the One UI 8 phone app
Peter, 07 August 2025 AI can be fun or helpful – but sometimes it can even be dangerous. Voice cloning has already been used to scam people who receive calls from – supposedly – a loved one in trouble. But AI can be used to defend against such scams too. Samsung has added voice phishing detection to One UI 8. This only works in Korea for now and has been trained on data from the National Police Agency and the National Institute of Scientific Investigation. If your phone supports it, you will find it in the Phone app settings – look for a Voice Phishing Suspected Call Notification toggle. Enabling Voice phishing detection The way this works is pretty simple. When talking to an unknown number, you will see a popup that says 'detecting' to notify you that the feature is listening in and scanning for AI voices. If an AI voice is detected, the phone will vibrate and ping to warn you, even if you are no longer looking at the screen. It seems that there are two levels: 'suspected', which cautions you to verify the identity of the caller, and 'detected', which confirms that it's a phishing call. The call log will remember detected phishing calls. Voice phishing detection in action Again, this is available in South Korea only for now, but hopefully Samsung will work with relevant agencies around the world to train its detection for other languages too.
