Migrant family in deep shock over alleged murder of Ekampreet Sahni
Ekampreet Sahni, 18, was allegedly murdered by a man who police say got out of car, opened fire on the victim and drove off in a white SUV on April 23.
Sahni had been hanging out at a Newcastle beach car park about 10 minutes' drive from his home.
Paramedics treated the 18-year-old for a gunshot wound in his chest but he died just before midnight.
'He was a good boy, very hard-working and caring for everyone,' his father Arminder Singh Sahni told AAP.
'It is still such a huge shock for us. We can't believe he's gone.'
Sahni said he and his wife had tried calling Ekampreet several times and were worried for his safety when he did not pick up.
They had last heard from him about 10pm, and their worst fears were realised when police officers knocked on their door about 2am.
'He told us 'I am coming back' but after we didn't hear until 11pm, I then called twice, and then we got the news he was gone, the two policemen came home and they told us,' an emotional Sahni said.
The Sikh family had migrated to Sydney at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to be closer to family and settled in Newcastle less than a year ago.
They are on a temporary visa and hope to secure permanent residency, adding another layer of stress to the family as they prepare to bury their son.
Sahni said Ekampreet was ambitious and studying automotive engineering with dreams of running his own business.
'He was always helpful and caring for everyone around him, from his grandparents to his younger brother,' he said.
A scuffle between two groups of people had broken out before the shooting.
Accused killer Decklen Deaves-Thornton, 22, later handed himself to police and was charged with murder.
He appeared in court via video link on April 26 and will appear in a Newcastle court in June.
The vehicle Deaves-Thornton was allegedly driving was later found on fire in a nearby suburb.
Police described the alleged shooting as 'a senseless incident' which the 'community won't stand for'.
Surrounded by friends and family, the Sahnis are preparing for their son's funeral on Wednesday at Beresfield Gurudwara Sahib where hundreds of people are expected to pay tribute.
A fundraiser has been set up by the tight-knit Sikh community.

Trump: Epstein ‘stole' Virginia Giuffre, other young women
US President Donald Trump has disclosed fresh details about the breakdown of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein nearly 20 years ago. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday local time, Mr Trump explained that the rift occurred because Epstein was repeatedly hiring away employees who worked at the spa in the US President's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. Mr Trump stated that he warned Epstein to stop taking his workers, but when Epstein persisted, Mr Trump expelled him from the club. When asked if the staff Epstein took included young women, Mr Trump confirmed that they did and suggested that American-Australian national Virginia Giuffre, a known Epstein accuser, was among them. 'Everyone knows the people that were taken, and it was the concept of taking people that work for me is bad,' Mr Trump told reporters as he flew back to Washington after a five-day trip to Scotland. (AP PHOTO) Credit: AAP 'But that story has been pretty well out there, and the answer is yes, they were (young women). 'In the spa, yep, people that worked in the spa. I have one of the best spas in the world at Mar-a-Lago, and people were taken out of the spa. Hired by him. In other words: gone. Other people would come and complain, 'This guy is taking people from the spa,'' Mr Trump added. 'When I heard about it, I told him, I said, 'Listen, we don't want you taking our people', whether it was spa or not spa. I don't want him taking people. And he was fine, and then not too long after that, he did it again, and I said, 'Out of here'.' Asked by a reporter if Giuffre was one of the workers taken from the spa, he replied: 'I don't know. I think she worked at the spa. I think so, I think that was one of the people, yeah. He stole her.' Mr Trump added, 'By the way, she (Giuffre) had no complaints about us, as you know, none whatsoever.' Giuffre, who had recently reverted to her maiden name of Roberts, was one of the most prominent accusers of Epstein, revealing her allegations against him in 2011. (AP PHOTO) Credit: AAP The mother-of-three successfully sued Epstein in 2015, alleging that he and convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell, had sex-trafficked her when she was just 16 years old in 2000. She also gained international attention when she alleged that she had sexual encounters with Prince Andrew when she was 17 years old. Chile hands watches stolen from Reeves over to FBI
Chilean police say six watches stolen from Keanu Reeves are valued at a total of $US125,000. (AP PHOTO) Chilean police say six watches stolen from Keanu Reeves are valued at a total of $US125,000. (AP PHOTO) Credit: AAP Chilean authorities say they have turned six valuable watches stolen from Canadian actor Keanu Reeves over to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, months after recovering them in a police raid. The FBI will arrange for their return to Reeves, best known for his roles in movie franchises like The Matrix and John Wick. Chilean prosecutors told reporters that Reeves had identified the watches as those stolen from his Los Angeles home during a string of high-profile burglaries in December 2023. The announcement was made as the US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem arrived in Chile for meetings with the country's officials about transnational crime, among other issues. Noem was also the victim of a robbery attributed to a Chilean citizen residing illegally in the US, when her purse was stolen last April at a Washington DC restaurant. Reeves' six watches are valued at a total of $US125,000 ($A192,000), according to police officer Marcelo Varas from Chile's robbery investigation squad. The watches stolen from Reeves' Hollywood Hills home - including an engraved Rolex worth at least $US9500 - turned up in Chile's capital Santiago when police raided homes and uncovered stolen cars, iPhones, luxury watches and designer purses. That operation coincided with another Chilean investigation, co-ordinated with the FBI, into a spate of burglaries by South America-based crime groups targeting multimillion-dollar homes in the US, many belonging to celebrities and professional athletes such as Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce. In April, police in Chile announced the arrest of 23 citizens over the string of break-ins. Varas said authorities were still investigating any link between the theft of Reeves' watches and the other high-profile burglaries.
