Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito's best One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest stories as it hits 50
The Milos Forman film, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, had become a bit of a sensation – it was the second-highest-grossing picture of 1975, behind Jaws, and had received nine Oscar nominations.
But Nicholson was not feeling optimistic. In five years, he had already been nominated five times. He had also lost five times. He told his producer, Michael Douglas – who would go on to win his own best actor Oscar in 1988 – that he could not go through it again.
'I remember how hard I had to persuade Jack to come to the ceremony,' Douglas says. 'He was so reluctant, but we got him there.
'And then of course we lost the first four awards. Jack was sitting right in front of me and sort of leaned back and said 'Oh, Mikey D, Mikey D, I told you, man.' I just said, 'Hang in there.''

Douglas, of course, was right. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest would go on to sweep the 'big five' – best screenplay, director, actor, actress and picture – the first film to do so since It Happened One Night 41 years previously. Only The Silence of the Lambs has done it since.

Why Stephen Colbert is the latest casualty of late-night TV's changing economics
Late-night television had been fighting for its survival even before The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was cancelled this week. The announced end of one of the most popular broadcast late-night shows, days after host Stephen Colbert accused the network owner of bribing President Donald Trump to approve a merger, drew cries of political foul play from liberal politicians, artists and entertainers. 'Stephen Colbert, an extraordinary talent and the most popular late-night host, slams the deal. Days later, he's fired. Do I think this is a coincidence? NO,' Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent, wrote on social media. CBS executives said in a statement that dropping the show was 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' Whether politics were at play, the late-night format has been struggling for years, as viewers increasingly cut the cable TV cord and migrated to streaming. Younger viewers, in particular, are more apt to find amusement on YouTube or TikTok, leaving smaller, ageing TV audiences and declining ad revenues. Americans used to religiously turn on Johnny Carson or Jay Leno before bed, but nowadays, many fans prefer to watch quick clips on social media at their convenience. Advertising revenue for Colbert's show has dropped 40 per cent since 2018 – the financial reality that CBS said prompted the decision to end The Late Show in May 2026.

Why the CIA hires showbiz people, both for missions and inspiring next generation of spies
At CIA headquarters in Langley, in the US state of Virginia, weapons-trained officers, computer engineers, virologists, nuclear scientists and a wide range of other experts toil away in the complex world of spycraft. But you will also find storytellers, make-up artists, theatre majors, ballerinas – people who probably never thought their skills would match the needs of a spy agency. The CIA thought otherwise. Though it is rarely highlighted, a revolving door of talent exists between America's premier intelligence agency and its entertainment industry, with inspiration and influence often working both ways. Not only does the agency target professionals at the intersection of arts and technology for recruitment, it cooperates with entertainment giants to inspire the next generation of creative spies, CIA officers said. This month, the agency is assisting a New York Times bestselling author on a young adult book examining the foundations of the CIA laid during World War II. Scenes from a major upcoming film production were just shot at its headquarters, a logistical feat at an intelligence campus tucked away in the suburbs behind rings of security perimeters, where officers roam, cracking down on Bluetooth signals. Another popular streaming TV series will be back at Langley to film this autumn.

‘Not shameful': China woman with UK master's in film directing returns home, works as waitress
A Chinese woman with a master's degree in film directing from the UK who now works as a part-time restaurant waiter in Beijing says she is not ashamed of her job choice because she is still chasing her acting dream. Yu Shutian, 29, returned to China at the end of 2021 after obtaining her degree from the University of Sussex in Britain. She joined a drama club the following year. By the time she quit the drama job in 2024, Yu had appeared in nearly 1,000 commercial stage plays, Jiupai News reported. Since then, she has been a freelance actress, which has meant a sharp drop in income due to the instability of the job. Yu Shutian says waiting on tables and talking to diners helps improve her English language skills. Photo: Douyin As a result, she began looking for some gig work in June.
