Be honest with yourself and stick with BN, Puad tells MCA

Rengit assemblyman Puad Zarkashi said MCA should focus on its roles and positions in Johor, Melaka, Perak, and Pahang to win back voter support.
PETALING JAYA : An Umno leader has urged MCA to remain a loyal partner in Barisan Nasional (BN) and to reflect on its declining support from the Chinese community.
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi was responding to MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon who had urged the party to take charge of its destiny if BN continued to drag its feet over a clear direction for the coalition.
'We sympathise with MCA. However, MCA should not blame BN for this.
'MCA must ask itself: why has support for the party from the Chinese community declined? Why did MCA win only two (parliamentary) seats in the 15th general election (GE15)? This has nothing to do with BN,' Puad said in a Facebook post.
MCA's two parliamentary seats – Ayer Hitam and Tanjung Piai – were won by party president Wee Ka Siong and vice-president Wee Jeck Seng respectively.
Puad said BN had contested alone at the nationwide polls in 2022 and only joined forces with Pakatan Harapan (PH) and others later to form the unity government.
The Rengit assemblyman also said Johor MCA Youth chief Heng Zhi Li was even more misguided for saying that the BN-PH cooperation was damaging Umno's future.
'Umno's real decline began after BN's defeat in the 2018 general election – and Umno did not blame BN.
'Umno has since made a comeback. If anyone wants to claim that the party is in decline, look at the by-elections in Nenggiri, Mahkota, and Ayer Kuning. That's why MCA needs to remain resilient,' Puad said.
Heng yesterday said that PH was not saving BN but dismantling it from within, and that blind cooperation would only render BN parties politically irrelevant.
He said recent comments by Johor Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros – who criticised Chong for urging the Chinese-based party to chart its own path – put BN in a 'lower and subordinate position'.
Puad urged MCA to focus on its roles and positions in Johor, Melaka, Perak, and Pahang.
'Prove your excellence and win back public support,' he said.
'Umno will continue to defend BN. MCA, MIC, and Friends of BN remain Umno's loyal partners. The BN-PH cooperation is for the people's welfare and to ensure a stable government.'
He also said the path forward for BN was clear: the coalition must prove that it listens to the advice of the Malay Rulers, remains committed, and upholds moderation.

Stop the 'satay politics' of fanning flames, Asyraf urges Umno members

BUKIT GANTANG: Umno members at all levels must immediately put an end to the culture of "satay politics" if the party wants to regain its strength and public support in the 16th General Election, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. The Umno secretary-general used the satay analogy for politics to describe the internal divisions that have plagued Umno, saying this is among the key factors weakening the party. "Unity is fundamental. We must avoid the culture of stoking tension, forming factions and fuelling conflict among party leaders and members," he said. "There are those who skewer, fan the flames, grill and flip things back and forth (sow discord). All of this must stop," he said after opening the Bukit Gantang Umno meeting here on Sunday (July 20). Asyraf Wajdi added that Umno must also return to its core foundation and principles of defending the interests of religion, race and the nation. He said anything that could distract the party from that mission, including the culture of "satay" politics, must be stopped. – Bernama

Traditional Malay wedding charms AARDO international civil servants

LANGKAWI: A group of 20 civil servants from 17 member countries of the African-Asian Rural Development Organisation (AARDO) were captivated by the vibrant traditions of a Malay wedding ceremony in Kampung Sungai Itau today. The delegates, who are in Malaysia for an eight-day international training programme organised by the Institute of Rural Advancement (INFRA) with the support of the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, took part in various aspects of the ceremony, including customary games and traditional food preparations. Participants in the programme included representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Liberia, Korea, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zambia and Jordan. Alagie Gaye from Gambia said the opportunity to witness a Malay wedding was a valuable experience that offered clear insight into the traditions and way of life in Malaysian villages. "I learned a lot about traditional Malay attire, local games, and the very warm way guests are welcomed. I'm so happy to have been part of this and will bring these memories home to Gambia. "You can only truly appreciate a culture when you live among the people and learn from them directly," he said. Gautam Singh from India echoed a similar sentiment, saying the opportunity to live with a host family provided invaluable insights into Malaysian village life. "Langkawi is a beautiful island, and programmes like this allow us to gain a deeper understanding of cultures beyond our own. I hope more initiatives like this continue," he said. INFRA director Abd Jalil Ismail said the programme was designed to deepen the participants' understanding of Malaysia's rural development policies and approaches. "They are not only learning about our policies but are also seeing the results for themselves, such as in Kampung Sungai Itau, which previously received the Madani Village Award," he said. Malaysia was recently chosen to host the AARDO International Training Programme aimed at promoting inclusive and sustainable regional development. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that since joining AARDO in 1962, Malaysia has actively contributed to capacity-building and training through INFRA.

No-confidence motion? Speaker says wait until tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has remained tight-lipped when asked whether his office has received any motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ahead of the Parliament sitting, which starts tomorrow. "Wait for tomorrow, thank you," he said briefly when contacted today. According to tomorrow's Order Paper published on the Parliament's website, no such motion has been submitted by any members of parliament, particularly from the opposition bloc. The Dewan Rakyat sitting, which starts tomorrow and runs until Aug 28, is expected to continue into the evenings, with the main focus on the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan. The call for the opposition to table a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister was made yesterday by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister. This was in response to efforts by the opposition to organise a rally scheduled for this Saturday, demanding his resignation. For the record, a confidence motion in support of the Prime Minister was previously tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Dec 19, 2022, after Anwar was appointed to lead the government following the 15th General Election (GE15). At the time, the motion was passed via a voice vote after it was tabled by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and seconded by his counterpart Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, before being debated by 12 MPs from both the government and opposition blocs. Meanwhile, acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad previously said police expect between 10,000 and 15,000 people to participate in the Himpunan Turun Anwar rally scheduled for July 26.
